- of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Willow River, in the county of Pine and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can- Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in can openers.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device that is easy and inexpensive to manufacture and adapted for readily cutting circular openings in tin surfaces such as the ends of tin receptacles, provision being made for adjusting the diameter of the openings to be cut.
A further object of the device is the provision of a tin cutter especially serviceable as a can opener, the device being readily adjusted for cutting circular openings at different diameters thereby accommodating the device for opening different sized cans.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view taken through the device, portions of the same being shown in side elevation. Fig. 2 is an elevational View thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sectional views taken upon lines IIIIII and IVIV of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cutting member detached.
The present instrument broadly consists of a cylindrical handle 10 having a flattened body portion 11 projecting from one end thereof in longitudinal alinement therewith, the said body terminating in an OK- set pointed foot 12 adapted to be forcibly projected through the pin to be cut and forming the center of the circular opening to be made therein.
An operating shaft 13 is journaled through the handle 10 and through a lug 14; adjacent the forward end of the body 11, the said shaft having an exposed screwthreaded portion 15 lying in parallel relation with the adjacent side of the body 11, a central longitudinal slot 16 being arranged through the said body 11 adjacent the said shaft.
A cutting blade 17 of substantially arrow shape is provided with a squared shank 18 slidably mounted within'the slot 16 and provided with a block 19 at its free end having a threaded opening 20 therethrough with the threaded shaft portion 15 extending through the said opening. The blade 17 is thus mounted upon theshaft 13 being rendered longitudinally shiftable by turning the said'shaft while a squared shank 18 insures a steady movement of the blade 17 longitudinally of the body 11 and with the portions of the body 11 at opposite sides of the slot 16 arranged between the adjacent shoulders 21 of the head 17 and 22 of the block 19.
The shaft 13 extending through the handle 11 is provided witha turn button 23 upon its outer free end and whereby the shaft 13 may be readily revolved in either direction for moving the blade 17 to the desired distance from the foot 12 and determining the diameter of the circle to be cut by the instrument. A screw 24 is carried by the handle 10 engaging within an annular groove 25 of the shaft 13 for preventing longitudinal movement thereof while a retaining washer 26 is preferably arranged upon the forward freeend of the said shaft,
- it being understood that the button 23 is secured in any desirable manner to the rear end of the shaft 13 and that such connection is eccentrically thereof. While the button 23 is designed for operating the shaft 13, a turn nut 27 is also carried by the shaft 13 arranged within a side notch 28 of the handle 10, a turning of the nut 17 readily operating the shaft 13 for feeding the blade 17 in the desired direction. The forward end of the slot 16 is preferably enlarged as at 29 for allowing the block 19 of the blade 17 to pass therethrough when the shaft 13 has been removed, thus providing for the assembling as well as disassembling of the dev1ce.
What I claim as new is 1. A can opener comprising a handle having an elongated body-portion terminating in a pointed foot and provided with a longitudinal slot, a cutting blade laterally projecting from the said body and having a operating shaft longitudinally journaled through the said handle extending longitudinally of the said body-portion adjacent the said slot and having operative connec- I tions with the said blade section, and a turn vided with a central longitudinal slot there- 7 through terminating in an enlarged portion adjacent the free end of the body, an off-set point pivoting foot carried by the free end of the said body, an arrow head shaped cutting blade slidably mounted laterally projecting from the said body and having a squared shank arranged Within the said slot, at block upon the free end of the said shank of less dimensions than the enlarged portion of the said slot and having a threaded opening therethrough, and anoperating shaft engaging within the said block opening.
3. A can opener comprising a handle, a flattened body-portion extending longitudinally from one end of the handle and provided with a central longitudinal slot therethrough terminating in an enlarged portion adjacent the free end of the body, an ofi-set point pivoting foot carried by the free end of the said body, an arrow head shaped cutting blade slidably mounted laterally projecting from the said body and having a squared shank arranged within the said slot, a block upon the free end of the said shank of less dimensions than the enlarged portion of the said slot and having a threaded opening therethrough, a lug projecting from the said body adjacent the enlarged end of the said slot and having a perforation therethrough through the said perforation provided with a threaded portion engagingly arranged "through the said block opening, and an opcrating button concentrically secured to the end of the said shaft adjacent the free end of the said handle.
4. A can opener comprising a handle, as
flattened body-portion extending longitudinally from one end of the handle and proi said body adjacent the enlarged end of the said slot and having a perforation therethrough in alinement with the opening of the-said block, an operating shaft longitudi nally journaled through the said handle and through the said perforation provided with a threaded portion engagingly arranged through the said block opening, an operating button concentrically secured to the end of the said shaft adjacent the free end of the said handle, and separate eccentric and concentrically arranged operating means upon the said shaft positioned adjacent theopposite ends of the said handle.
