UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GAMBLE, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE A. REACH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GATCHERS MIT'I'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN GAMBLE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Catchers Mitts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved catchers mitt, in which I utilize the features of my former Patent 808,980 dated January 2,} 1906, including the inner padding which I preferably form in layers, covering the front face of the padding with a leather fac ing which is stitched to the pad so as to hold the parts securely in position to give firmness to the soft material of which the pad is made; to prevent the pad from working into wrinkles and also from breaking under the impact. I then take this unit consisting of the pad and its leather face secured together and put it within the ordinary casing shown in my previous patent and fasten the two sections of the casing together by lacings, which also pass through eyelets in the margin of the intermediate cover so as to hold it securely in place at the same time and by the same holding means.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a section of the complete glove, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the center unit including the pad and the intermediate cover.
In these figures the pad or lining A is preferably made up of layers of felt or other soft material and I protect its front face with an intermediate leather cover B, which is secured to the pad by stitches running through the padding and cover which tend to hold the parts together; to prevent wrinkling of the material of the pad and any tendency against the pad breaking into pieces under the impact. The supplemental cover imparts firmness to the structure without lessening in any way its flexibility.
The intermediate cover fits over the front face of the padding and has a flange or margin which overlaps the edge as shown at a, and this margin is eyeleted. When the cover sections C, D, are applied as in my former patent the lacings E not only pass through the marginal perforations of the sections C, D, but also through the perforations of the intermediate section B and thus as shown in Fig. 1, hold the parts firmly together.
What I claim is:
A catchers mitt comprising a padding, a leather facing therefor, secured thereto, having a marginal eyeleted portion overhanging the edge of the padding and covering sections with securing means for the edges thereof, said securing means passing through the eyelets of the facing leather, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN GAMBLE.
Witnesses:
