DRIVING MECHANISM FOR PUMPS.
Application filed May 24, 1913.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, PETER C. Ionns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chanute, in the county of Neosho and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving Mechanism for Pumps, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in oil well pumping mechanism and pertains more specially to operating devices therefor.
It is the primary object of this invention to provide novel means whereby the various pumps of a well farm may be operated from a central station.
A further object of the invention contemplates the provision of positive powerful mechanism so constructed that a plurality of surface rods leading from a plurality of pumps may be adjustably secured to the power and the pumps and thereby actuated as will be hereinafter fully described.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of novel means wherein suflicient pull or motion is given to the pumping or surface rods through the medium of an eccentric or cam, the cam forming a part of the power mechanism comprising the central statio-n.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim forming a part of this application.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the mechanism comprising my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
In the operation of oil pumps in oil fields, in order to economize power and fuel and reduce the operating expenses, it is usual to provide a central station equipped with suitable power such as a gas or steam engine adapted to operate a power mechanism to which the surface rods of the various pumps are connected so that a numberof these pumps may be simultaneously operated even though they be located a consid- Speccation of Letters Patent.

erable distance from the central operating station.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a suitable concrete base having a plate 2 bolted or otherwise secured thereto as at 3, the said plate having a central opening formed therein through which an upright or vertically extending shaft 4. extends, the lower end of the said shaft being seated within a recess 5, (illustrated by the dotted lines in F ig. 1) formed within the said base. Removably mounted upon the shaft 4 and rotatable therewith, I provide a pulley wheel G, the said wheel being retained upon the upper extremity of the said shaft through the medium of a transversely extending key 7, the said key fitting within an opening formed within the said shaft. A belt S is arranged over the pulley wheel 6, the said belt being -driven from any suitable source of power (not shown), thereby rotating the pulley and the shaft #I upon which it is mounted.
Disposed adjacent the base 11, preferably upon each side thereof, I provide an upright or vertically extending spindle 8, the said spindles and the mechanism carried thereby being the same, but one will be described in detail. The spindle S has formed integrally therewith at its lower extremity, a suitable base portion 9 which is bolted as at 10 to a concrete base 11, this arrangement mounting the spindle in rigid relation with the said concrete base 11 upon and to which it is secured. A rod 12 extends vertically throughout the length of the spindle 8, the upper extremity of the said rod being exteriorly threaded as at 13 for the reception of a nut 1&1-, the latter adapted to clamp a. suitable bracket 15 over and upon the upper extremity of the said spindle S. The bracket y 15 is twisted as at 1G from which point it extends to a suitable bearing 17 where it is iixedly secured through the medium of screws or other fastening elements 1S. This arrangement of the bracket 15 over and upon the spindles S effects an immovable bearing or journal for the vertically extending shaft 4; which, with the recess 5 formed within the base 1 supports the said shaft in the desired upright manner.
A gear wheel 19 is mounted upon the spindle 8 where it is free to rotate according to the rotation of a pinion 2O keyed or otherwise secured to the vertically eXtending shaft 4l into which it meshes. Bearing balls engage the under face of the wheel 19, the said bearings being retained in proper place through the medium of a keeper or ring 22 arranged upon the top of theibase portion 9 of the spindle. An eccentrically disposed off-set portion :23 is formed inte grallywith and upon the upper face of the wheel 19, the spindle S extending therethrough. A ring or band 2d is arranged over the periphery of the eccentrically disposed olf-set portion and is provided with a hook 25 over which a detachable hoolr shaped member 25 is iitted for fastening the surface rod 26 thereto, the latter terminating in a forked or divided end 27, one of which lits within an eye 28 formed upon the said rod 25.
rin idler 29 in the form of a dish, is arranged over the spindle 8 in spaced relation to the cam or eccentric off-set portion 23, the said idler being provided with a plurality of openings 30, into one of which, the hook shaped member is fitted when detached or remov'ed from the hook 25 of the cam. The idler 29 being immovable or stationary upon the spindle 8', it will be seen that the surface rod when secured thereto through the medium of the hook shaped member 25, above mentioned, is held inoperative, while the said rod when secured to the cam or eccentric 23 is reciprocated by the rotation of the gear wheel 19 upon which the cam is arranged, the former being rotated according to the rotation of the pinion 20 into which it meshes.
Having described fully the detail construction of the power mechanism, it now remains to describe the operation thereof. rlhe surface rods 26 are normally secured to the idler 29 by means of the hook shaped member 25 where they are held inoperative as the said idler is immovable or stationary, this arrangement of the surface rods rendering the pumps to which the rods are connected inoperative. lVhen it is desired that the rods should be reciprocated for operating the pumps, the hook shaped member 25 is disconnected from the idler 29 and secured to the cam or eccentric 23, by means of the hook 25 carried thereby, this connection of the rod 26 to the eccentric reciprocates the former according to the rotation of the large gear wheel 19 governed by the rotation of the pinion 2O of the driven shaft 4.
It will be seen from the above, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that any number of surface rods may be operated from the central station or pumping power comprising my invention by attaching the rods to the cams or eccentrics carried by the large gear wheels 19; that time, labor and expenditure is decreased to a material extent by the use of mechanism constructed as herein described; and that pumping power of the above character may be'arranged or set up at a comparatively low cost and without necessitating the employment of skilled labor.
In reduction to practice, l have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and r Ylierred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efiicient and practical; yet realining that the conditions concurrent with the adaptation of my invention will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without acriicing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters iPatent is:
fr device the character described comprising standards, a vertical shaft rotatably mounted between said standards, a bracing bar having its end portions twisted and se cured Vflat upon the tops of said standards and provided intermediate its length with a bearing through which said shaft extends, gear wheels rotatably mounted upon the lower portions of said standards and provided with upwardly extending disks forming cams, a gear carriedby said shaft and meshing with the gears of said standards, means for rotating said shaft, disks mounted upon said standards above said cams, collars rotatably mounted upon said cams, a pump shaft extending to a point adjacent one of said lirst mentioned gears and provided with upper and lower hooks, and a rod for selectively connecting the lower hook of said rod with said collar and the upper hook with the disk positioned. above the cam.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PETER C. ICKES.
