SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 251,956, dated January 3,1882. Application filed October 20, 1881. (No 150m.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, W. (J. B. SHAFFER, a citizen of the United States, resident of Ayersville,in the countyof Stokes and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of Pt ference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a vertical section of my invention and Fig. 2 is a detail view.
Thisinvention has relation to double pumps; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the double stock, its partition dividing the working-barrels, and its horizontal valved partition, the vertical reciprocating valve-rods, each carrying an upper and lower valve-head, the operating-levers, arranged one forward of the other, the link-connections,and the double-crank shaft and its connectin g-rods, all as hereinafter set forth.
This double pump may be constructed on a large or small scale, but is adapted especially for drawing water for engines or for carrying the water back from below a water-wheel into the penstock, when it is designed in time of drought to use the same water over again in running the wheel.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the pump-stock, which is usuallymade twelve by twenty-four inches in cross-section, and is designed to stand in a box or other reservoir containingthe water to be raised. Openings should be made at the foot of the stock to admit the water to the working-barrels B B in its lower portion. ,These barrels are located one in front of the other with relation to the motive power, or theymay be arranged one beside the other, in either case a partition, 0, serving to separate them, being placed vertically in the stock and extending upward as far as the upper end of the lower portion, in which the valve-heads play. Somewhat above the lower end of the stock, and in the same, is placed the horizontal partition or bottom D, which is provided with central bearings, a, in
each working-barrel, and with valves l1, opening upward and designed to hold the water which may be lifted above it.
E E represent the valve-rods, which reciprocate vertically in the lower bearings, a, and the upper, bearings, c, which are provided at 'the upper end of the stock. Each valve-rod carries two valve heads or pistons, F and G, one being above and the other below the horizontal partition or bottom D. These pistons are provided with valves (1, opening upward, as indicated in the drawings.

K indicates a double crank shaft carrying a band-wheel, 9, arranged either at the end of the shaft or between the cranks h. Rods we serve to connect the cranks to the outer ends of the levers H H. .When the crank-shaft is put in motion by power fromany machine to which it may be connected the valve-rods and pistons will be worked up and down, raising the water readily. The cranks are arranged on opposite sides of the crank-shaft, as indicated in the drawings, so that the pistons will balance each other and move with regularity and facility as said shaft is turned.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, lS- Y The combination, with the double pumpstock, its horizontal valved partition D, and vertical partition 0, dividing the working-barrels, of the vertical reciprocating valve-rods E, the pistons F G, links 6, levers H, and the double crank shaft K, its connections and band-wheel, substantially as shown and de scribed.
