These core pieces 31 together with the loose flanges 38 constitute ribbon carriers which are readily removable from their cups or housings. Fixed to the lower end of each shaft 33 is a beveled pinion 44 which is adapted to mesh with a corresponding beveled pinion 45, the pinion 45 being mounted on the horizontally disposed ribbon driving or power shaft 46, which takes bearings in the sides of the base and at the, right-hand side projects through the base and is provided with a turning handle 47. The upper end of the shaft 50 is provided with a pinion 52 which meshes with the toothed wheel 11 thus connecting the shaft 46 with the spring drum 10. Fixed to the shaft 50 is a ratchet wheel 53 which is engaged by a spring detent 54 that revents backward rotation of the shaft 50. he pinion 48 and the gear 49 are constantly in mesh but provision is made for turning the shaft 46 by the handle '47 without affecting the shaft 50, this being accomplished by mounting the pinion 48 loosely on the shaft 46 and providing one end of said pinion with a set of ratchet teeth 55 with which engages a corresponding ratchet 56 that is integral with a clutch member 57 slidably mounted on the shaft 46 and engaged by a .cotiperating clutch member 58 fixed to the shaft 46. The ratchets and 56 al e maintained engaged by a coiled spring 59 that is arranged between the ratchet and the hub portion of the clutch member 58. When the handle 47 is turned the shaft 46 will turn, this turning movementbeing transmitted through the clutch ,member 58 to the clutch member 57 whose ratchet 56 will click over the ratchet 55. When motion istransmitted in the opposite direction, however, from the shaft 50 to the shaft 46, the ratchet 55 will force the ratchet 56 to turn with it, thus forcing the shaft 46 to turn.
The driving pinions 45 are so disposed on the shaft 46 that only, one of said pinions at a time can cotiperate with its associate pinion 44 as is usual, and by shifting the shaft 46 endwise the pinions 45 may be alternately connected anddisconnec ted in turn, thus reversing the ribbon feed. During such shifting the elongated pinion 48 will always remain in engagement With the sp ral gear 49. The shafts 33 are preferably spring mounted, coiled springs 33 being interposed between the brackets 34 and the hub portions of the'pinions 44. These spr ngs tend constantly to press the shafts 33 downward and maintain the hub portions of the flange members 35 in contact with the top plate 3. The endwise shifting of the shaft 46 may be accomplished by hand through pushing or pulling on the handle 47, or else by automatic shifting or reversing devices next to be described. Said shaft is maintained in one or the other of its shift positions by detent' devices of ordinary construction inclosed in a hoiising 60 secured to the righthand side of the main frame.
The ribbon reversing mechanism comprises angular reversing members 61 ar ranged within slots cut in the upper ends of the shafts 33. Each reversing member is pivotally connected at 62 to the upper end of a rod 63 that is slidably mounted in a hole extending longitudinally through the shaft 33. The lower end of each rod is adapted to engage with an underlying worm 64 on the end portion of the shaft 46 to move said shaft endwise to reverse the ribbon. As hereinafter described the rods 63 may be alternately raised and lowered to effect this result. Each reversing member 61 comprises an upright arm 61 which is adapted to play in a slot 65 cut in the corepiece 31, the flange 68 also being notched at 66 to allow of such play. The horizontally disposed arm of the reversing member 61 terminates at one end in a toe portion 61 to contact with the flange 35, which acts as an abutment or fulcrum for the member 61. The opposite end of said horizontal portion terminates in a projection 61. Normally the upright arm 61 is confined within the slot 65 by the folds of the ribbon as shown in Fig. 2, and as a result the rod 63 is lifted so that its lower end is clear of its associate worm 64. .Vhen the ribbon has been completely unwound from. the core piece, however, the member 61 will swing out and down until it is arrested by the flange as shown in Fig. 7, causing a lowering of the rod 63 until it engages with the underlying worm, with the result that as turning movements of the shaft 46 continue, said shaft will be wormed along endwise, until the pinion 44 adjacent the lower rod 63 is engaged by the associate pinion 45, the pinion 45 at the opposite end of the shaft 46 being concurrently disengaged or rendered inoperative. As thereafter the shaft 33-and its lower rod 63 continue to turn the projection 61 will come in contact witha cam piece 67, Figs. and 6. screwed fast to the top plate in the path of said projection, with the result that the member 61 will be cammed or swung upward about the toe 61? as a center lifting the rod and restoring the upright portion 61 within the slot where it will be confined by the first ply of the winding-on ribbon. This change in the normal position of the vibrator and its controlling devices will not affect the vibrator actuating devices comprising the link 93 and crank arm 95. there being sutiicient loose ness at the' point of connection of the link 93 with th crank arm 91 to allow of this, the swinging movement of said crank arm 91 about the axis of the rock shaft 78 being comparatively slight. In this field-changing operation it will be observed that pal ts 76, 78 and 81 operate as a. single lever mom- )8! having an elongated fulcrum portion. In order positively to limit the swinging movements of the tube 76 stop devices are preferably provided for (:(Xiperation with the inner end portion of said tube, said stop devices comprising a bracket. 96 fixed t0 the rear portion of the top plate by screws 97 and provided with rearwardly extending lugs 98 and 99 spaced apart to allow sufficient play of the tube 76 which is arranged between them. The lower lug 98 provides a stop for the tube when it is in its lower position while to insure accuracy of ad i. ment the upper lug 99 is preferably pro. led with an adjustable screw stop 100 which arrests the tube when it is swung upward to raise the vibrato:- to its uppler normal position. The stop 73 limits v1 )ratory movements of the ribbon vibrator.
It will be observed that by my present invention I provide in combination with a ribbon vibrator, ribbon fieldchanging devices or mechanism which comprise a pivotal support for said vibrator, and means upper end of th spring detcnt 88 to hold for communicating pivotal movement to said support to change the normal position of said vibrator. in order to change the field of the ribbon that is presented to the types when the vibrator is actuated; that in the present instance the pivotal support is in the form of a tubular hearing, which is rigid on a rock shaft, that is key-controlled from the front of the machine by a k y that is rigid with said rocli' shaft, said rock shaft being mounted on an arm that extends radially therefrom, said tubular bearing also projecting rearward from said rock s raft; that the ribbon vibrator is rigidly connccted to a pivotal device or rock shaft which akes hearings in: said tubular bearing; that the ribbon vibrating devices in the present instance comprise a vibrator proper and a rock shaft on which said vibrator is fixed; that said rock shaft bears in a tube which 35 is rigid on the second rock shaft; that the second rock sha it remains quiescent when the first rock shaft is rocked to move the vibrator to and from the printing point; that said first rock shaft does not rock on its own axis when the ribbon field is charged but does turn about a center which is coincident with the axis of said second rock shaft, in other words the rock shaft is moved pivotally about an axis which is at an angle to the pivotal axis of the rock shaft itself; and that the first rock shaft has .one arm fixed to it, 5.6., the vibrator proper which carries the ribbon, and another arm fixed to it which is connected tovibrating devices operative from the printing keys.
My present invention provides for an exceedingly simple and effectiveribbon fieldchanging mechanism, the partsbeing few and not liable to get out of order and the construction being such that the chance of overthrow is minimized.
Various changes may be made without departing from my inventiom IV hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is g 1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a pivotal device to which said vibrator is rigidly connected, means for moving said pivotal device predetermined extents to change the normal position of said vibrator, and means connected to said pivotal device for vibrating said vibrator, the last recited means remaining quiescent when the change in normal position of the vibrator takes place. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a pivotal device on which said vibrator is mounted, 'ahbearz ing in which said pivotal device bears, means 125 for moving said bearing to change the normal position of said vibrator, and vibrating means connected to said vibrator.
