To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN M. RioHARo- SON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couch-Beds; and I do hereby de-- clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. 3

My invention has for its object to provide a simple, economical and effective bed couch and the invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts as set forth hereinafter with reference to the accoin 'iarying drawings and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of a couch embodying the features of my invention, the section being indicated by line 11 of Fig. 2 with the parts folded for use of the device as a couch or sofa, and Fig. 2, a sectional plan view of the same showing the parts extended for use as a bed, the section being inclicated by line 22 of Fig. 1.

Referring by characters to the drawings, 1, 1, represent the side standards of a skeleton coucl1frame connected by a front brace strip 2 and a top brace strip 3. The standards are also connected at their back by a panel 3, whereby the mechanism is coneealed. The standards are provided with front bed body pintles e which are engaged by cars 5 that extend from the inner sec tion 6 of a two part foldable bed-body, the outer section 6 being hinged to the inner section by studs 7. The bed-body pintle 4 is positioned to the front and just rearwardly of the brace-strip 2 and when the bedbody is not in use it is folded within the skeleton frame, as shown in Fig. 1 and the rear ends of the hinged sections are supported by brackets 8 which project from the inner faces of the standards. The standards also carry rearwardly positioned seat pintles 9, upon which pintles are mounted ears 10 that depend from the rear edge of a suitablv upholstered seat A, the forward end of which seat is adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the brace-strip 2. nection with the ends of the arms and the said ears are approximately midway between the upper and lower edges of the back rest. When the back is in its normal functional position, its upper edge 1) forms a butt-joint connection with relation to the top brace-strip 3 and also engages a shoulder portion 3 that forms part of the top brace, whereby the back is firmly held. The upper portion of the back rest is provided with ears 13, to which are pivotally connected links 1 1, the opposite ends of the same being pivotally secured to slide blocks 15. The slide-blocks are mounted upon vertically disposed guide-rods 16, which guide rods are secured to the skeleton frame by brackets 16, the same being in this instance shown attached to the rear panel 3. The bed-body comprising the foldable sections 6 and 6 is equipped with any suitable type of spring supports 17 for a mattress section, the said supports being shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The inner section 6 of the bed body also carries brace-bars 18 for leg members 19, which leg members are pivoted to the outer sections 6 of the bed body. This construction, however, forms no part of my invention as any means for supporting the outer end of the bed body when extended in its functional position may be provided.

From the foregoing description it is obvious that when the device is to be used as a couch, the outer free end of the seat 8 is first swung upwardly, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the swing being effected about its pintles 9. As this movement takes place it will be observed that the arms 11 will cause. the back-rest to bedrawn downwardly whereby its upper edge will become disengaged fromv its position of rest with relation to the top brace 3. As the seat is folded back to its extreme position where it engages the top brace, it will be observed, as indicated in dotted lines Fig. 1, that the back will drop vertically and be guided in its drop by the link and slide connection with the guide bars 16. Thus the bottom of the skeleton frame is exposed and thereafter the bed body can be quickly and conveniently folded and swung into its position as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, where it rests in a compact form within the frame and directly under the seat. After the bed body is so folded the seat member is again swung to the position indicated in full lines of Fig. 1, in which position the couch or sofa is ready for use.

IVhile I have shown and described details of construction minutely for carrying out my invention, it is understood that I may, without departing from the spirit of the invention, vary these details within the knowledge of those skilled in the art of furniture construction.

I claim:

A couch bed comprising a skeleton frame having end standards connected by front and top brace-strips, a seat having a pintle connection at its rear end with the standards, its front end being adapted to rest upon the front brace strip, arms extending upwardly from the rear portion of the seat, a back-rest in pivotal union with the arms, the pivot connection being at a point intermediate of the upper and lower edges of said back-rest, a stop-shoulder extending from the top brace for engagement with the upper end of the aforesaid back rest, vertical guide rods secured to the frame rearwardly of the back-rest, links in pivotal union with the upper edges of the backrest, guide blocks slidably mounted upon the rods and pivotally connected to the links and a foldable bedbody in pivotal union with the skeleton frame, the pivot point being in juxtaposition to the front brace strip, and means eX- tending from the end standards of the skeleton frame for supporting the bed body when in its folded position with relation to the couch frame.
