IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKSMITHS TOOLS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,837, dated October 10, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. FORBES, of lvlarshalltown, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Blacksmiths7 Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specitication and to the letters and figures of reference i'na-rked thereon.

Figure l of the drawing is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a face view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical or longitudinal sectional view of the same.

This invention has relation to an improved implement for the use of blacksmiths and other mechanics; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of devices, whereby the implement is adapted to a number of distinct and separate uses, as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawing, illustrating this invention, A represents a pair of long handles, constructed with inwardly projecting lugs a, through which is inserted a pivot, b, connecting` them together. B represents a pair of curved jaws pivoted to the ends ofthe handles A. The outer ends of these jaws are made wide and adapted to come together the same as the jaws of pinchers. A portion of the ends of said jaws are serrated, as shown at b', to render them serviceable in holding rounded bolts, as a wrench. O represents a pair of beveled recesses near the Serrat-ions b', the edges of which face each other and are designed to come into contact for the purpose of cutting bolts. D represents a T- shaped bar, having its cross-head secured to the jaws B by means of pivots d, which are inserted through them and held by nuts d placed outside a cleat, D, parallel with said cross-head. E designates a long` slot cut in the bar D lengthwise.

F Fl represents cleats constructed with projecting iianges f on their back parts, which fit within the slot E. The cleat Fis held in place rigidly by means of a bolt, f, and nut fl; but may be adjusted, when necessary, to different points along' the bar D. The cleat F is held in place by the pivot b, and slides along the bar D whenever the handles A are worked. G Gf represent, respectively, lugs projectingv from the inner ends of the cleats F F', and formed with holes for the reception of a punch and sink. H shows a ii( nged plate secured to one of these lugs by means of a bolt, h, which answers the purpose of a punch. rThis bolt may be used with or without the plate H, or a short bolt may be employed to secure said plate to the lug when a punch would not be desirable. Without the punch the plate is adapted to the cutting of band-iron, and is provided with a beveled cutting-ange, It. With the punch or with a more suitable tool which may be readily substituted for the punch, the plate and cutting-flange may be used for the purpose of cutting washers. By removing the plate and punch the lugs G G constitute a wrench for holding and turning square bolts or nuts. J represents an arm pivoted within a recess formed in one of the handles A. This arm is provided with a slotted head, K, and is intended to be used for the purpose of drawing bolts and headed pins.

I claim as my invention- The improved tool, consisting of the levers A, jaws B, shears O and h', punch h, slotted bar D, and slotted head K.
