SHEET-METAL LEAD-KEG.
Application filed November 12, 1912.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Crmnnns SToLLERo, a citizen of the United States, residing 1n Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Lead-Kegs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sheet metal kegs such as are commonly used for transporting white lead.
An object of the invention is to provide a keg having a seamless drawn body member provided with a strengthening or reinforcing bead or rim. at the top or mouth end, the bead or rim serving also as a shoulder to which the cover can be clamped, said body being additionally reinforced at the bottom portion by means of a strengthening or reinforcing band, preferably electrically spot welded to the body, said strengthening band being also provided with a bead or rim corresponding in outside diameter to the outside diameter of the bead or rim at the top end of the keg, whereby the keg may be easily rolled in a straight line.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of the parts and devices herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming a. part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal, sectional view of a lead keg and cover therefor embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a transverse, sectional View taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, the main or body portion of the keg is represented by the numeral 10, and as shown, the same is drawn seamless and at its upper end or mouth portion is provided with the usual form of strengthening or reinforcing bead or rim 11 over which is adapted to fit the curved ange 12 of a countcrsunk cover 13, said rim being provided at intervals with fastening lips orprojections 14 adapted to be bent around and under the bead or rim 11. The body member 10, is necked in at the bottom thereof, as shown at 15, thereby providing the body with a shoulder 16. Rigidly'secured to the necked-in portion .15, and preferably by spot Specification of Letters Patent.

welding, is a reinforcing band or strip 17, the latter being provided at its lower edge with a bead or rim 18, similar to the bead or rim 11 and of substantially the same di ameter from outside edge to outside edge.
From the foregoing description it willibe seen that the lead keg is reinforced at the bottom substantially as strongly as at the top and that the shoulder 16 serves as an abutment for the band 17 when the keg is placed on end, and that by making the beads or rims 1l and 18 of the same diameter, the kegs may be easily rolled in a straight line, thereby overcoming a defect commonly found in lead kegs as hitherto manufactured, wherein the diameter of the keg at the mouth end has been considerably greater than that at the bottom, thus preventing the kegs from rolling in straight lines.
I claim 1. A sheet metal lead keg of the character described comprising, in combination: a drawn, seamless body member having an integral bottom and provided with a strengthening bead at its top end, said body being necked-in at the bottom, thereof; and a strengthening band permanently secured to the body member around the necked-in portion thereof, ing provided With a bead of substantially the same diameter as the bead at the top end of the keg, whereby the keg is adapted to be rolled in a straight line.
2. A sheet metal lead keg of the character described, comprising, in combination: a drawn, seamless body member having an integral bottom and provided with a strengthening bead at its top end, said body being necked-in at the bottom thereof; and a strengthening band welded to the body member around the necked-in portion thereof, said strengthening band being provided with a bead of substantially the same diameter as the bead at the top end of the keg, whereby the key is adapted to be rolled in a straight line, substantially as specified.
