exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in metal barrels or receptacles, and pertains more especially to a metal receptacle having its body comprising a vertically arranged or upright tubular metal shell which is en'- cular in plan and has its upper end-portion contoured as required to receive a head or closure for the receptacle.
The primary object of this invention is to produce a metal receptacle of the character indicated which is strong and durable and light in weight and can be cleaned internally and manufactured with facilit With this object in View, an to the end of attaining any other object hereinafter appearing, this invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations and relative arrangement of parts, hereinafter described in this specification, pointed out in the claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawin y In said drawings, igure 1 is a side elevation of the upper end-portion of a metal barrel or receptacle embodying my invention, and portions are broken away in this figure to more clearly show the construction. Fig. 2 is a top plan relative to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section taken along the line 3-3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of a portion of Fig. 3.
The body of my improved metal barrel or receptacle comprises a vertically arranged or upright metal shell A of which only the upper end ortion is illustrated in said drawings. aid shell is preferably circular in plan. The upper end-portion of said shell is shown provided externally with a laterally and outwardly projecting annular rib a spaced from but arranged in suitable proximity to the upper extremity and extending circumferentially of said shell.
Said end-portion of said shell has two circumferentially extending vertically spaced annular laterally and inwardly offset portions 6 and 7 which are integral with the body A and arranged between the rib a and the upper extremity of said shell, and each of said offset portions forms an annular recess 10 arranged at the exterior and extending circumferentially of said shell. It will be observed therefore that the offset portions 6 and 7 not only form two vertically spaced recesses 10 externally of the shell A but also form an annular recess 11 between said offset portions internally of said shell, and that all of said recesses are arranged col'icentrically.
The bottom of the upper offset portion 6 of the shell A forms a downwardly facing substantially horizontally arranged annular shoulder 12 internally of said shell, and said upper offset portion flares toward its upper end.
The top of the lower offset portion 7 of the shell A forms an upwardly facing substantially horizontally arranged annular shoulder 18 internally of said. shell, and said lower offset portion flares toward its lower end to facilitate internal cleaning of the receptacle below the recess 11 formed, as
already hereinbefore indicated, between the offset portions 6 and 7. The shoulder 13 formed by the top of the lower offset portion 7 of the shell A forms an annular seat extending farther inwardly than the shoulder 12 formed at the bottom of the upper offset portion 6 of said shell and consequently extends farther inwardly than said upper ofi'set portion. The seat 13 is arranged to support a head (not shown) to be employed as a closure for the receptacle, and the recess 11 between the offset portions 6 and 7 of the shell A'is large enough vertically to receive said head and means (not shown) employed in looking or holding said head tightly against said seat.
I would here remark that the offset portions 6 and 7 of the shell. A materially reinforce the upper end-portion of said shell, but to still further strengthen said end-portion of said shell an annular reinforcing metal band B, preferably of steel, is provided which band surrounds said shell and is ar ranged next above the rib a and extends upwardly from said rib across the recesses 10 and therefore forms a closure for said recesses. Said band preferably snugly embraces and extends circumferentially of the shell A between the recesses 10, and consequently between the offset portions 6 and 7 of said shell. and above the upper offset portion 6 and below the lower offset portion 7 and therefore materially reinforces said shell between and above and below said offset portions.
The band B is provided at its upper end with a laterally and outwardly projecting rounded annular flange 6 extending circumferentially of the band, and the shell A is provided at its upper end with a laterally and outwardly projecting annular member 14: extending over and thence downwardly across the outer circumferential edge of and under said flange and into an annular recess 15 formed, preferably next below said flange, in the outer side of and extending circumferentially of said band. The member 14 of the shell A preferably snugly embraces the flange b as shown, and is instrumental in preventing displacement of the band B endwise of said shell in either direction. It will be observed therefore that the annular member l has its portion which extends under the flange 6 serving as a support for the band B, and, of course, the rib a, being arranged next below said band, as shown, positively prevents descent of the said band.
I would here remark that the shell A is preferably formed of a single steel plate or sheet rolled or otherwise operated on to form the offset portions 6 and 7 and the rib a and bent to form said shell, that the laterally and outwardly projecting member 14L of said shell is not formed until after the application, to said shell, of the reinforcing band B, and that said member 14 is formed by spinning or otherwise operating on the upper end of the section forming said shell. upon the application of said band.
What I claim is In a receptacle, the combination, with a body comprising an upright metal shell which is circular in plan and has its upper end portion provided externally with a rib spaced from the upper extremity and extending circumferentially of said shell, said end portion of said shell being provided between its upper end and said rib with two circumferentially extending and vertically spaced laterally and inwardly offset annular portions, the bottom of the upper offset portion forming a downwardly facing annular shoulder internally of said shell, the top of the lower offset portion forming an upwardly facing annular seat-forming shoulder internally of said shell, and said offset portions forming vertically spaced annular recesses arranged at the exterior and circumferentially of said shell, of a reinforcing band embracing the aforesaid end portion of said shell and forming a closure for said recesses, said band being supported at its upper end portion from said shell and being arranged next above the aforesaid rib.
