WEEE" Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1916.
Application led December 8, 1915. SerialNo. 65,851.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. SHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and'useful `/l/lreneh, of which the following is a specification.
invention relates toV wrenches, and consists' of an arrangement of Wrenches which is particularly adapted foruse in connection with an automobile. 1t is also particularly adapted .for use with the automobile now being manufactured by the 'Ford Motor Company, of Detroit, and its use will be explained in connection with lsuch an automobile.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a wrench by means of which a single workman can readily remove the bolts fastening the transmission case 1n place without any assistance. This particular applicaton of my invention is illustrated in the drawings, in which:
Figure 1. shows a. portion of an automobile, and the method of operating the wrench thereon, a portion ofthe wrench bein shown in section to better illustrate the invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation showy opening 11 formed therein, this opening being square or hexagonal to fit heads 15 formed on bolts 1G, or to fit nuts 17 which are threaded on the bolts 16. In the application shown the bolts 16 are used to fasten together flanges 18 and 19 which are formed on the. transmission case 20 and the crank case 21. The turning socket 13 is secured to a round shank 23, this shank being bent to form a crank handle 24. A grip 25 is secured to the lower end of the crank handle 24 in such a manner that it turns freely therein, this` grip being of such a size that i* can le easily and securely held by the fingers of the user. The holding member 12 consists of a holding socket 3G, this socket 30 having an opening 31 therein 55 which' is of such a size and shape as to slip over and securely hold either the bolt head 15, or the nut 17. Secured to the holding socket 30 is a shank 32, this shankbein formed of .a semi-circular bend 33, a primary straight portion 34, and a secondary straight portion 35. The primary bend is of the proper 'size and shape to pass around and over a side motor hanger 50 so that it can be used on the forward bolts 51. The dimensions'ofthel various parts are made such that when the sockets 13 and 30are in place on the nut 17, and the bolt head 15, that the secondary straight portion 35 of the holding member 12 extends under the grip 70 25 in immediate proximity thereto.
The method of operating the invention is as follows: The socket 30 is slipped in place on one of the nuts 17, and the socket 13 is slipped in place on a corresponding bolt 15, the` parts then being in the yapproximate p0 sition shown in the drawing.- One hand A of the user is used to hold the grip 25, and the secondary straight portion 35 as shown.in -Fig. 1. The other hand B of the user seizes the crank handle 24 turning it so that the bolt 15 is rotated and Withdrawn from the nut 17.
My invention has a practical utility' in connection with the Ford automobile in that it is often necessary to remove the transmission case 20 for the purpose of renewing the friction bands which are carried therein. As the transmission case is located under the floor of the car near the front 90 thereof, it is in .a rather inaccessible location, and at the present time it is necessary for two men to perform the operation which is performed with my wrench. It is difficult for a-man under the car to reachany of the nuts 17, and impossible for him to reach theV nuts 51. One of these men sits inside Vthe car and holdsthe nut 17 with any f .nurinbers o f these 'brake hands are regularly handle, and a curved shank secured to said 10 holding Socket and S0 shaped that it lies adjacent te said grip when said sockets are in place on the nut and bolt;
ln testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hund at Los Angeles, California', this 15 2d day of December, 1915.
