ALBERT A. MAXWELL, OF HUNTINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
wnnivcrr.
Application filed November 26, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT A. MAXWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, in the county of Cabell and State of est Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVrenc-hes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and an object of the invention is to provide an ordinary monkey wrench with means whereby the same may be effectively employed for use upon pipes and to engage with the said pipes either upon the exterior or the interior thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will embody the desirable features of simplicity, cheapness and thorough etficiency.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The wrench may be of the ordinary construction including a stationary jaw 1 provided with the usual shank upon which is mounted the movable jaw 2, the movable jaw being actuated toward the stationary jaw by a screw 3. The movable jaw has its working face grooved longitudinally and the side walls provided by the said groove having elongated openings 4 through which pass pins 5'43, arranged upon the sides of the slidable auxiliary jaw 6 and this jaw is normally forced in an outward direction through the medium of a spring 7 which is secured to one ofthe edges of the shank of the stationary jaw. The jaw 2 has its edge opposite that provided with the auxiliary member 6 formed with an outwardly extending rounded stud 8 which is adapted to be received in the rounded bore 9 of a semicylindrical member 10. This member 10 has its rounded face provided with teeth 11 and 12, each of which extending in opposite directions or at opposite pitches from the central portion of the said rounded face of the member 10. The stud 8 is provided with a transverse slot or opening 13 through which is passed a securing element, prefer- Specification of Letters Patent.

ably in the nature of a cotter pin 1a, whereby the member 10 is retained upon the stud. It will be noted by reference to the drawings that the sides of the rounded face adjacent the flat portion thereof are farther away from the pivot stud 8 than is the central portion of the said rounded face, and therefore the member 10 may be described as eccentrically journaled upon the stud 8, and this arrangement permits of the said mem ber 10 performing a function which will later be referred to.
The jaw 1 is integrally formed with a'substantially semi-cylindrical gripping member 15, the straight face of the same being arranged flush with the straight engaging face of the jaw, and the rounded face of said member 15 is provided with teeth 16 and 17 arranged at opposite pitches from the center thereof, in a similar manner to the teeth 11 and 12 of the gripping member 10.
When the jaws of the wrench are adjusted to permit of the gripping members 10 and 15 being arranged within a pipe tube and the said wrench is moved at an angle to a gripping position it will be noted that the member 10 will have a cam action upon its pivot stud 8 so that the greater the strain in a gripping direction, the tighter the member 10 will engage with the pipe, and as the teeth of both the members 10 and 15 are arranged at opposite pitches from the center thereof it will be noted that the wrench may be revolved in either direction to permit of the ready screwing of a tubular member, such as a spindle upon a pipe or the removal of the said member as well as the rotation of a pipe or tube in either direction. It will be also noted that the auxiliary jaw 6 will be forced by its spring 7 into biting engagement with the pipe, rod or tube, when the wrench engages with the exterior of the said member. It should have been stated that the inner wall of the groove within which the auxiliary jaw is seated is disposed angularly with relation to said jaw, and also the inner or contacting face of said jaw engaging with the said wall is likewise inclined or beveled, and thus it will be noted that as the auxiliary jaw grips a pipe or the like the same moves upon the inclined surface of the jaw 2 elevating the said auxiliary jaw to bring the same nearer the jaw 1, and consequently into tight engagement with the ob- 'ect.
] From the above description, taken in con stud extending laterally from the slidable member in a line with the gripping element of the stationary member, a gripping member journaled upon the stud, said gripping member including a flat face and a rounded face, teeth formed longitudinally upon the rounded face, and means for removably sus taining the gripping element upon the stud.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT A. MAXWELL.
