To all fio/wm it may concern Be it known that I, Nuls ERIK 4.lAHLBnno,
.a subject of the .Czar of Russia, residing at 0ntiac, in the county oi' Oakland and State of Michigan, one of the United States of America, have invented certain new and Combined Rotary and Slide Valves for Explosion-Engines, of which the followinf is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying' drawings.
The invention relates to explosion en gines and more particularly to that type .in which the ports are controlled by a slidingsleeve valve in concentric -relation to the piston and cylinder. lVith engines of this type it has been found desirable toaprovide tivo sleeves in order to obtain a quick openings,r of the ports in properly timed relation, but this considerably increases the cost of construction; lilith the present invention I avoid the use of the second sleeve by combining with the single sleeve valve, a, rotary valve which controls the same ports and which is arranged to close said ports during the compression and explosion strokes. This will effectively seal the explosion chamber as the rotary valve acts in coperation with the rings on the piston and c linder head. 0n thev other hand, during tlie exhaust and intake strokes where part of the rotary valve is open there will be but slight leakage of gas duc to the low pressure. I further simplify the construction by utilizing the rotary valve as an eccentric shaft for operating the reciprocating,` sleeve to which it is connected by a rod or pitman.
The invention therefore, consists in these and other features of construction as hereina-iter set forth.,

A is the cylinder of the engine which may beeither single or of the multi-cylinder block'type, B is the crank case, C are the pistons Within the cylinders, and Dis the reciprocatory sleeve which is arranged intermediate the piston and cylinder.
At one side of the cylinder is arranged a valve case E containing a. rotary .valve ll" oi' the cylindrical type, The ports G of this valve are adapted to alternately register with inlct'and exhaust ports G and H and to connect the same with a port l which is controlled by the sleeve D. The valve F is driven by any suitable drive mec-iniu nism such as the spiral gears l, vertical. shaft J and spiral gears K which communicate movement or" the crank shaft to the valve.
The sleeve l) is driven through the medium of the rotary valve and to this end said valve is formed with eccentric grooves L therein forming eccentric bearing pins M which engaged by pitinan rods N, the lower ends of which extend into the crank case and are pivotally connected at O to the sleeve D, rlhese eccentric bearings are preferably an ranged upon opposite sides ot the ported portion of the valve and are vengaged by a. bifurcated pitrnan rod. The pins M being ivithin the periphery of the body of the valve permit of inserting said valve end*- vvise through the case E, and when in po sition the pitinan is engaged therewith by providing split bearings l therefor:y

`What claim as my invention is:
l. The combination with a ported engi-ne cylinder', ofa slide valve and a rotary valve cooperating to control a port in said cyl inder, a timed drive mechanism for said rotary valve, an eccentric bearing on said rotary valve, and apitrnan rod engaging' said eccentric bearing and connected to said slide valve to reciprocate the saine.

The combination with a ported cyl index', of a cylindrical sleeve valve, and a rotary valve cooperating to control a lport in said cylinder, a timed drive mechanism for said rotary valve, an eccentric bearing on said rotary valve, said eccentric bearing and pivotally conn nected with saidsleeve valve. y

opposite sides of the ported portion of said rotary valve, a Jimed/drive mechanism for said rotary rettile, and a bifurcated pitman embracingthe ported portion of said rotary valve and engaging said eccentric bearings, the opposite end of said pitman being pivotally connected with said sleeve valve.

5. lhe combination with a ported engine cylinder, of a slide Valve and a rotary valve having its axis prependicular to the axis o the Said cylinder, said slide valve. and rotary valve controlling a port .of said cylinder in cooperation, and a direct-connection between said slide Valve and rotary valve for operatingone through the medium of the other.
'6. The combination with a ported engine cylinder, of a slide valve and a rotary Valve cooperating to control a port in said cylinder, said rotary valve having its axis transverse to the axis of said cylinder, a timed drive mechanism for said rotary valve, an eccentric bearing on said rotary valve, and a pitman rod engaging said eccentric bearing and connected to said slide valve to reciprocate the same.
