Description

R. R NORDSTROM.
WRENCH.
APPHCATION FILED mm s. 1916.

INVENTOR) WITNESSES 4 '1 VJ m ATTORNEY- RAYMOND R. NORDSTROM, OF LITGHFIELD, MINNESOTA.
WRENCH.
Application filed June 5, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND R. Norm STROM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Litchfield, in the county of Meeker and'State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and has particular reference to that type of wrench designed to operate on bolts, nuts and other objects having parallel sides and also to operate as a pipe wrench.
The principal object of this. invention is to provide a combination wrench for the purpose described which shall be simple, of few parts, quickly adjusted to the article to be engaged and when so adjusted the parts will be held securely in the desired position without danger of loosening or fear of separation under the stress placed upon them by the operation of the wrench.
To this end the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described andillustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of the wrench. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the same. Fig. 3 is a Vertical cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: is sectional view on the line H of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, 10 indicates the shank of the wrench on one end of which is a head 11' that projects beyond the shank 10 in opposite directions forming a jaw 12 having a smooth face for use upon nuts, bolts and the like, and a jaw 13 the work ing face 14: of which is roughened or provided with transverse teeth, as shown and forms a portion of the pipe wrench jaw. The opposite end of the shank 10 forms a handle for the wrench and is provided on each of two sides with a plate 15 of wood, metal or other material and of convenient shape to be grasped by the hand.
Slidably mounted on the shank 10 between the head 11 and handle 15 is a sleeve 16 one end of which carries a head 17 with jaws 18 and 19 similar to the aws 12 and 13 of the head 11 and adapted to cooperate with said latter jaws when used eitheras a nut or bolt wrench, or pipe wrench. One edge or side of the shank 10 contains a number of transverse notches 20 arranged parallel to each other for a greater or lesser Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1916. Serial No. 101,827.
distance through the length of the shank 10 said notches having parallel walls and being separated by straight teeth 21. The sleeve 16 adjacent the head 17 is thickened on the side corresponding to the notched side of the shank and through said thickened portion is formed a slot 23 in which there slides a pawl or dog 24: of such thickness as to enter snugly any one of the notches 20 and lock the sleeve 16 on the shank 10 against movement in either direction. The end of the sleeve 16 nearest the handle is also thickened on one side as at 25 to which thickened portion is rigidly secured one end of a spring 26 that is shown curved outwardly and then inwardly, the free end having an opening or perforation 29 therein for the passage of the threaded outer end ,27 of the dog or pawl 24 'on which threaded end is secured a ring 28, with which the finger may engage for the purpose of raising the dog 27 from engagement with one of the notches 20. The opening 29 in the end of spring 26 is longer than the diameter of the threaded stem 27 of the dog or pawl to permit the spring to slide, if necessary, when said dog or pawl is raised, and thus prevent the dog binding in the slot 23. The tension of the spring 26 is normally to hold the dog 24 in one of the notches 20 so that in whatever position the wrench may be held, the shank and sleeve will be securely connected together and it is only by exerting outward pressure on the spring 26 through the ring 28, that the sleeve and shank are separated by the lifting action on the dog 24:.
To use the wrench, the handle 15 is grasped by one hand and with the forefinger and thumb of the other hand the ring 28 is seized and the dog 24 lifted until it becomes disengaged from one of the notches 20. The same hand which lifted the dog then moves the head 17 by sliding it on the shank 10 to or from the head 11 as the case may be until the jaws 12 and 18 snugly fit on the nut, bolt or other object to be turned; or if a pipe is to be gripped, until the jaws 13 and 19 are clamped snugly on opposite sides thereof. Upon releasing the ring 28 the dog or pawl 24- enters a notch 20 and locks the sleeve 16 and shank l0 securely together with the jaws of the wrench at the required distance apart. 'It is to be understood that the notches 20 in the shank 10 will be of such size and such distance apart as to fit the standard bolts, nuts and pipes from the smallest to the largest within the compass of the wrench.
While I have shown and described what I consider the most simple and convenient form of the device, it is to be. understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the present invention as set forth in the appended claim.
I claim: I
In a wrench, the combination with a shank having a plurality of parallel rectangular notches in one side, and a sleeve readily slidable, longitudinally on said shank and having thickened ends on the side correspondingto the notched side of said shank, of a pair of jaws on the end of said shank, cooperating jaws on one end of said sleeve and movablerto and from the jawson the shank, a dog or pawl slidable through 'a guiding slot in the thickened portion of said sleeve'adjacent the jaws, and adapted to en- 7 Copies of. this patent may be obtained for gage one of said rectangular notches in the shank, a threaded stem projecting outwardly from said dog or pawl, a spring fastened to the thickened portion of the sleeve at its opposite end and bearing with its free end upon said dog or pawl and normally tending to maintain the same in locked engagement with one of the aforesaid notches, said free end of the spring having an elongated slot therein for the threaded stem to pass through, and a ring secured on said threaded stem to maintain connection between said dog or pawl and the spring and also serving as a finger grip for lifting and disconnecting the, dog from one of the aforesaid notches.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RAYMOND R. NORDYSTROM.
