llc it known that I. Hnuururr E. LYNCH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Telephone Instruments, of which thefollowing is a. specification.
This invention'relates to improvements in telephone instruments and has particular application to a combined transmitter and receiver,
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a combined transmitter and receiver wherein the receiver and transmitter will be carried in a single casing so that a conversation may be carried on without necessitating the holding of the receiver to the ear of the user of the instrument, thereby enabling the person using the instrument to use the' hands for writing or other purposes while carrying on a conversation.
It is also my purpose to provide a telephone instrument of the class described, which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, elliciency and durability, which will operate efficiently and ellectively to transmit and reproduce sound waves and which may be manufactured at small cost.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts here inafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a combined telephone transmitter and receiver constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a. fragmentary sect onal view through the instrument.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, 1 designates a base constrm-ted of any suitable or preferred matr while 2 indicates a standard uprising from the base. Fastened to the upper end of the standard 2 in some Suitable manner and ha viz-:5: tho longitudinal axis thereof disposed at right angles to the standard 2 is an amplifying h rn I; l wing: the small end there-oi secured to the ard and the relatively large end projecting outwardly from the standard. Disposed within the relatively small end of the amplirelatively large end of the sound amplifying horn 3 is a transmitter 6 of any usual or preferred construction. In the present instance, this transmitter is disposed approximately centrally of the relatively large end of the horn and is secured in position by means of supporting rods 7 radiating from the transmitter and having the outer ends thereof fastened to the outer edge of the born, the rods being spaced apart equal distances so that the transmitter will be supported with uniformity. If desired, a hand operated switch may be employed to make and break the talking circuit and this switch is preferably carried by the standard 2 adjacent to the upper end thereof within convenient reach of the user of the telephone instrument.
In practice, the sound-waves reproduced by the diaphragm 4 under the action of the magnets are amplified by the horn 3 and emerge from the relatively large end of-the horn while the sound waves sent into the transmitter G by the user of the instrument a re reproduced at the other end of the line in a like manner. It will be seen that I have provided a telephone instrument where by the user can both hear the reproduced sound waves and transmitted sound Waves without the necessity of holding the receiver to the car as is now usual. 4
