To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EUGENE PHELrs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pitchfork, in the county of Park and cState of lVyoming, have invented a new and improved Chain TWrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to wrenches and has to deal particularly with the type known as chain wrenches.

The general objects of the present invention are to improve and simplify the construction and operation of wrenches of the character referred to so as to be reliable and efficient in use, comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and so designed as to be easily and quickly applied to an object to be turned, and to grip such object with great power.

A more specific object of the invention is the provision ofa wrench having a single jaw and with which coperates a chain linked at one end to the jaw, and any link of the chain is adapted to be engaged with a tooth carried by the jaw at a point spaced from the link that unites the chain with the jaw, whereby the said jaw and chain can grip an object to be turned, and furthermore, the wrench` may have a hollow handle into which the free end of the chain extends so as to be out of the way and not interfere with the proper gripping or operation of the wrench.

Still another object of the invention is the provision of a wrench which is extremely narrow so that it can be used in places where wrenches of the present type, due to their bulkiness, cannot be used.

W ith such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel lfeatures of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particulai-ity in the following description and claims appended hereto.

Referring to the drawing, A designates the handle of the wrench, which is formed with an enlarged jaw portion 1 which is integral with the handle. rllhe handle may bc made of sheet metal shaped into the desired form, but it is to be understood that the handle may be made solid, such as by casting or drop forging, as shown in Fig, 7. The j aw l has its operative portiondisposed at a slight angle to the axis of the handle, and carries a serrated hard steel j aw element 2. rlfhis jaw element is a piece of hard steel in bar form and formed with serrations 3. On opposite sides of the jaw element are dovetails l which it in dovetail recesses 5 in the j aw portion of the handle. The jaw piece 2 has one end formed into a hook 6 that projects from the jaw portion 1 of the handle and is approximately parallel. with the length of the handle.

Cooperating with the jaw element 2 is a chain 7 for gripping an object to be turned. This chain is connected by link members 8 with the head or enlarged end of the handle, such link members being pivoted to swing on the pivot rivet 9. By linking the chain to the handle in this manner the chain is more readily adaptable to grip objects of different diameters. The hook 6 serves to fasten the free portion of the chain to the handle by a link of the chain being engaged with the hook, whereby the chain can be fastened in loop formation about an object and hold the latter against the serrations of the jaw element, as shown in Fig. 1. rlfhe free end of the chain may be inserted .through an opening 10 into the hollow of the handle A so as to be out of the way. The serrations 3 are pitched away from the hook 6 so that they will bite into an object when the handle is turned in one direction or anti-clockwise in Fig. 1 and slip around on the object when the handle is turned clockwise, whereby the tool can be operated by a sort of ratchet action.

In the modification shown in Figs. 7 and 8 the jaw element 2 is a stamp of U-shaped cross-section which has its hollow side fitted to the tongue 11 on the handle Af, and the jaw element 2 is secured in place in any suitable manner, as by a rivet 12. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

l. A chain Wrench comprising a handle having at one end an enlargement provided with an arcuate face, the chord of which is disposed at an acute angleto the length of the'handle, and said face being provided with serrations and having a continuation forminga hook making With Ethe lhandle a recess, a link pivotally connected with the handle at the side thereof opposite from the hook, and a chain having one end connected with the free end of the link and the other endof the chain free, the links of the chain being engageable with the hook.

2. A chain Wrench comprising a handle having a jaw portion at one end, a jaw piece formed with an arcuate face, the chord of Which forms an oblique angle to the length of the handle, and said jaw piece having serrations in its arcuate face, means for fastening the jaw piece rigidly to the handle, there being a hook-forming extension at one end of the jaw piece and cooperating With the adjacent portion of the handle to form a recess, and a chain fastened to the handle and having its links engageable With the hook, `whereby the chain coperates with the jaw piece to grip an object.
