MEDEERIC LAFONTAINE, 0F CHARLEMAGNE, QUEBEC, CANADA.
WORK-HOLDER.
Application filed January 7, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MEDERIO LAFONTAINE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Charlemagne, LAssomption county, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Work-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to filing machines and more particularly to an attachment for band saw filing machines whereby the band saw will be properly presented to the machine and the cutting and grinding of the band saw may be easily and readily performed.
The object of my invention is to provide a supplementary work holder and means for the vertical adjustment of this holder simul taneously with that of the usual work holder on a machine having cutting or grinding tools operated by power thereon.
A further object is to provide a work holder of the specific construction herein disclosed.
My invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which the figure is a side elevation, showing the application of my invention to a machine for grinding saws.
Referring to the drawings A designates a frame, B a rotatable tool and C a vise or work holder adapted to be adjusted vertically and in relation to the rotatable tool B. In the form shown the vise C is adjusted by means of a gear-D, in mesh with a gear E carried by the inner .end of a shaft 1, arranged to be operated manually by crank G. The vise C is provided with a centrally arranged tube being internally threaded and the gear D has extending therefrom a vertically threaded shaft which extends within said internally threaded sleeve or tube whereby upon the rotation of said gear the vise will be raised and lowered as is common and well known in vise raising and lowering means and familiar to Specification of Letters Patent.

those skilled within the art. All of this construction is well known and the form shown is of a saw grinding apparatus, the specific details of which form 110 part of my lnvention.
Intermediate of its ends the shaft 1 carries the gear 2 disposed to mesh with a gear,
3 on the lower end of a vertical shaft 4. Arranged within the frame A is a bearing 6 in which a portion 5 of the shaft 4 is mounted. Through this medium rotation of the crank G will produce rotation of the gear D and the consequent raising or lowering of the vise C.
At its outer end the shaft 1 carries a gear 7 disposed to mesh with a gear 8 having a rounded under side disposed in a stepbearing 9. A standard 10 carries the step bearing 9 and a plurality of bearings 1l Disposed in the bearings 11 is a vertical shaft 12 having its lower end threaded through the gear S. The shaft 12 carries at its upper end a vise 13, arranged to be. operated by any suitable means for opening and closing and corresponding in function and elevation to the vise C.
In the operation of my invention rotation -of the crank G will cause rotation of the shaft 1. This rotation through the medium of the gear E raises or lowers the vise C, and at the same time causes rotation of the interiorly screw threaded gear 8 to raise and lower for the same distance the post 12. Used as a separate element the work holder described may have its gear 8 actuated by any common mechanical means.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination in a band saw filing machine having a vertical adjustable work holder therein, of an adjustment having a vertically adjustable work holder arranged. therein, a horizontally arranged shaft for operatively connecting said work holders, a vertical shaft operatively connected to said horizontally arranged shaft and means whereby upon the rotation of said vertical shaft the work holders may be simultaneously operated.
2. The combination in a band saw filing machine having a vertical adjustable work support therein, of an adjustment comprising a standard, a shaft vertically adjustable within said standard, a work holder carried by said shaft, a horizontally arranged shaft Q; I I 1,196,370
being operatively connected to the work holder carried by the saw filing machine, the opposite ends of said horizontally arranged shaft. being operatively connected to r a shaft journaled within the standard of the work holder, a vertical shaft j ournaled within the band saw filing machine, means for connecting. said Vertical shaft withsaid horizontal shaft, and means whereby upon the rotation of said vertical shaft the work 10 holders will be simultaneously raised and lowered for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
