LAUNDRY APFLANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented dug. 2f i916.

A VL"Laundry Appliances, of which the following is a specification. l
This invention relates to improvements in. laundry appliances, particularly 'for domestic purposes, and to the types used in hand scrubbing washable textile articles, known as washboards.
The objects ot' the invention are, rst, to
provide a wash-board in which a bar or cake of laundry soap is so arranged as to make intimate contact with the articles as they are rubbed over the surface of the board, the soap being moved forward as it becomes worn.
L A second object is to provide a receptacle within the trarne of the wash-board adapted to contain laundry accessories, as bluing, etc. And finally to provide a device of this character of unusually cheap and strong construction, and attractive, appearance.
These objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinai'ter described and 'shown in the accornpanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in Which:--
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a washboard made in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a Avertical sectional view,
' taken on line 2--2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line BMS of Fig. 1.
The drawing shows the wash-board, having sides 10, the lower end of which may enter a tub or the like containing water', suds and the article to be Washed; a cross tie l1 connects the upper ends of the side frames, which are further braced by a cross bur 12 secured rigidly between the sides.
Extending from the upper tie 11 to the bar 12, and filling the space between the sides, is a central metallic plate 13, corru gated from side to side and constituting the usual rubbing surface.
At about the center of the plate an opening is made through which extends the side oi' a bar of soap 15, the soap being guided by the inturned edges 16 of the metal plate and supported by a backing plate 17 provided with spurs 18 which enter the soap preventing it from being displaced.
Arms 19 extend laterally from the plate 17, the arms being so formed as to clear the sides 10, and passing through openings in the ends are screws 20, having enlarged ends 21, the` screws being threaded into nuts 22 set on the sides 10 and operated by the knobs 23 which extend through the side frames where they are easily accessible for operation in turning and thereby bringing the soap into register with the face of the board.
At the upper end of the wash-board, ad-
jacent'to one of the frame sides is a pocket or chamber 25, adapted' to contain a bottle or stick of bluing 26, tlle same being held therein by the slide27, thus forming a very 'convenient and appropriate receptacle for a material almost invarlably used in laundry work.
Havinof thus described my invention and explained its constructionand use, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p ln a wash board, the combination with a frame having longitudinal side members, a corrugated scrub plate carried by said frame and having an opening through the center "thereof adapted to receive a bar of soap, a
single resilient support for the soap alined with said opening, rods engaged with the ends of'said resilient support, said rods be ing screw-threaded their entire length and extended through said frames above the sur face thereof, and means for the separate operation of said rods whereby the surface of the soap may be adjusted parallel with the surface of said scrub plate.
1n testimony whereof, l have signed my name to this ,speciication JOHN SHERIDAN.
