JACOB S. BROWN", LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR T0 WALTER IF. EICHEN- HOFER, OF LOS ANGELE S, CALIFORNIA.
WELL-CASING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, -JACOB S. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Well-Casing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved well casing apparatus especially adapted for use for holding a well casing as the same is being installed in a well and to enable the sections of the casing to be successively jointed together.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a well casing apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 isa plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line aa of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the clutching slips.
The spider 1 through which the well casing is lowered is provided with a downwardly tapered central opening-2 and in accordance with my invention is provided on its upper side with a ring 3 which has an outer upstanding annular flange 4 and is also provided with downturned lugs 5 which engage around the spider and are provided with securing screws'6, which serve to detachably secure the ring on the spider. The ring is also provided with spaced pairs of upwardly and outwardly inclined radial arms 7 which are provided with bearings 8. I also provide flexible shafts 9 which comprise members 10 that are mounted in the bearings 8 and'members 11 which connect the members 10. Each member 10 is pro vided at its ends with forks 12. Each memher 12 is provided with forks 13 which are arranged at right angles to the forks 12. Blocks 14. are interposed between the forks 1213 and are connectedto said forks re-- with the wall of the opening 2 of the spider and said clutching slips are provided with teeth 19 on their inner sides presenting sharpened edges. These clutching slips when moved downwardly'in the opening of the spider are adapted to engage tightly around the casing and hence support the thereon. The rock arms are adjustably secured to the shaft members 10 by means of set screws 25.
One of the shaft members 10 is also provided with an upwardly extending lever arm which is connected ,to an operating lever 27 by a connecting rod 28. The said connecting rod comprises a tubular member 29 which has a fork 30 at its outer end pivotally connected to the lever and also comprises a member 31 which is telescopically arranged in the tubular member, is secured thereto in adjusted position by a set screw 33 and is provided at its inner end with a fork 34 which is pivotally connected as at 35 to the lever arm.
In the operation of my improved apparatus when the casing A is raised so that the slips are relieved .of its weight the slips are raised out of the tapered hole in the spider and held in elevated position until the casing is let down far enough to take on the next joint. The slips are then dropped down in the tapered hole in the spider to hold the casing until the next joint is connected. To prevent the; casing from turning an abutment 36 is provided in the spider which 'is arranged between two" of the clutching slips. Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In an apparatus of the class described a spider having a downwardly tapered opening, a ring secured on the spider and provided with bearings, a flexible shaft arranged around the ring and mounted in said bearings, rock arms radially arranged and connected to the flexible shaft for rocking the casing in the event they should stick motion thereby, means to turn the shaft and impart oscillating motion to the rocking arms and segmental clutching slips arranged vertically and vfor radial movement in the tapered opening of the spider and connected to and operated by said rock arms.
2. In an apparatus of the class described a spider having a downwardly tapering opening, a ring secured on the spider and having pairs of radially arranged arms provided with bearings, a flexible shaft arranged around the ring and mounted in said bearings, a lever arm connected to said shaft, means to operate the lever arm and thereby rock said shaft, radially arranged rock arms attached to and operated by the shaft, and segmental clutching slips ar ranged for radial and vertical movement in the opening in the spider and attached to said rock arms.
3. In an apparatus of the class described a spider having a downwardly tapered opening, a ring secured on the spider and having bearing members, a flexible shaft arv in presence of two witnesses.
