. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT C. GAUER, OF LINDSEY, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR DETACHING AND ATTACHING THE SECTIONSOF PUMPING OR SUCKER RODS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT C. GAUER,'a citizen of the United States, residin at Lindsey, in the county of Sandusky an State of Ohio, have invented certain new-and useful Improvements in Devices for Detaching and Attaching the Sections of Pumping or Sucker Rods, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for attaching and detaching the sections of a and other eep we ls; and it has for its object the provision of a device, adapted to'be detachably secured to the tubing of the well, for holding and operating the wrenches used in screwing up and unscrewing the several sections of such rod together and apart,
To this end the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of the several parts of the device hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawing, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an'elevation of my improved device attached to the cas- Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device showing the several means for holding the wrenches in osition, and the wrenches thereon holding t e pumping or sucker-rod. Fig. 3 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 2, the wrenches being omitted. Fig. 4 is an elevation, partly in section, showing the device attached to the tubing of a well in proper o erative position. Figs. 5 and 6 are views 5 owing the wrenches used in connection with the device.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a derrick floor or platform, 2 the drive pipewhich is driven down to the rock or bottom of the well, 3 the casing within the drive pipe, 4 the head of the casing which carries the tubing, and 5 the tubing. The numeral 6 indicates the gas-line, and 7 the oil-line 8 the jointed pumping or sucker-rod,
9 the polish rod secured to the top of the sucker-rod, and 10 the joints or couplings of said pumping or sucker-rod.
The numeral 1 1 indicates my improved device for attaching and detaching the several sections of the sucker-rod, and comprises a bracket 12 of any suitable shape, preferably that shown in the drawing, havin ournaled thereon a driving wheel 13 provi ed with an operating handle 14, as shown. This bracket 12 is also provided at its top with a project- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing head 15 having a recess or chamber 16 in its under side, and on its top an upwardly eX- tending cylindrical boss 17. On the top of this boss 17 is a flange or plate 18. This flange or plate 18 may be made integral with said boss 17, or it may, preferably, bemade separate and ri idly secured thereto. The numeral-19 indicates a Vertical opening extending through said flange or plate 18, the boss 17, and into the recess or chamber 16 of the head 15, as is evident, and is for a purpose hereinafter stated.
The numeral 20 indicates a wheel journ'aled on the boss 17 between the top of the head 15 and the flange or plate 18, and meshes with the driving wheel 13, as is apparent, and is operated thereby. On the top of the flange or plate 18 adjacent to the opening 19, is a suitable pin or lug 21, for a purpose hereinafter stated; and on the outer edge of said wheel 20 are two diametrically opposite pins or lugs 22, 22, also for a pur ose hereinafter stated. At the lower end 0 the bracket 12 immediately below the head 15 is a projecting hinged clamp 23, also for a purpose hereinafter stated.
When it is desired for any purpose to separate the sections of the pumping or suckerrod, the poli'shrod at the top of the sucker-- rod is removed, and the head 15 of the device 11 is placed over and upon said sucker-rod and run down thereon until the recess or chamber 16 in the under side of said head 15 fits onto the top of the tubing 5 above the oilline 7, thehinged clamp 28 is then passed around the tubing just above the top of the An elevator wrench 24 is then secured to the suckerrod, by means of which said sucker-rod is raised until a oint or coupling thereon is presented above the top of the flange or plate 18, when another elevator wrench 24 is secured to said sucker-rod just below said joint or coupling and isfirmly held to said flange or plate-18 by the pin or lug 21. A wrench 25 is then affixed to said sucker-rod just above said joint and has its outer end resting against one of the pins or lugs 22. When thus positioned the device is ready to be operated to detach the section of the sucker-rod above said joint from the section just below, and this operation is accomplished by revolving the drlving wheel 13 which causes the wheel 20 to revolve and turn the wrench 25, whereby. the section above the joint is unscrewed, and can then be removed. If it is desired to screw these sections together the lower end of the up per section is placed in the coupling, the wrench 25 attached thereto and placed in proper position in the wheel 20, and the driving wheel 13 revolved in the opposite direction, whereupon the two sections will be secured together, as is evident.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a suitable bracket, a driving wheel ournaled thereon, a hollow boss on said bracket, and means on said boss adapted to hold a wrench thereto in station ary position, of a wheel mounted on said boss adapted to be operated by said driving wheel, means carried by said wheel adapted to engage and hold a wrench rigid therewith, whereby a ointed rod may be oined or disjointed when said wheel is rotated.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a suitable bracket, a hollow boss on said bracket, and means on said boss adapted to hold a wrench thereto in stationary position; of a wheel mounted on said boss, means carried by said wheel adapted to engage and hold a wrench rigid therewith, and means for rotating said wheel whereby a jointed rod may be joined or disjointed when said wheel is rotated.
3. In combination with the tubing 01 an oil well and the sucker-rod carried thereby, a
bracket secured to said tubing and over said sucker-rod, a head carried by said bracket through which said sucker-rod projects, and a driving wheel mounted on said bracket; of a wheel mounted on said head adapted to be operated by said driving wheel, mechanism for engaging a section of the sucker-rod, and means carried by said head for engaging and holding said mechanism and said section of the sucker-rod stationary and rigid with said. head, and, mechanism for engaging an adjoining section of said sucker-rod, and means carried by said wheel adapted to engage and hold said'mechanism rigidly to said wheel, whereby on the rotation of said wheel said sections of the sucker-rod may be joined or disjointed.
In testimony whereof I L'IfiX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT C. GAUER.
