Application filed February 26, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER NoRDwALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of lVyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Locks and Latches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined lock and latch and one object is to produce a springless lock which is reliable in operation and durable and simple in construction.
A further object is to provide an element for automatically controllingthe latch bolt and closing the key hole in the lock, so that a key cannot be inserted until the latch bolt is retracted to inoperative position by said element, which at the same time uncovers the key hole. g
Other objects of the invention will hereinafter appear, and in order that said invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lock with one side thereof broken away to show the interior mechanism. Fig. 2 is an irregular section on line IIII of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of an element for automatically controlling the latch bolt and closing the key hole in the lock. Fig. l is a broken section through the key hole of the lock with a key in position therein. Fig. 5 is a broken irregular section on line V of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a section on line VI of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 shows a modified form of detent for a rim lock.
Similar reference numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout the drawing.
1 designates the lock case which may be either of the mortise type, as disclosed by the preferred form Figs. 1 and 2, or it may be of the rim type disclosed by the modified form Fig. 7.
2 designates a key bolt reciprocably mounted in the case 1 and supported at its rear end by a pin 3, extending through a segmental slot 4 in said rear end. The sides of the slot 4: engage the pin 3 and retain the bolt 2 in locked or unlocked position, until the rear end of the bolt is raised by the key A, as will hereinafter appear. The underside of the bolt 2, near its rear end, has a recess 4 adjacent a key hole 5 in the case 1, so that 5 when the key A, is inserted and turned in Specification of Letters Patent.

said keyhole it will engage the recessed portion at and throw the bolt 2 in the direction in which the key is turned. As the key A 1s rotated to throw the bolt in or out it raises the rear end'of said bolt, so that its slotted portion 4 may slide on the pin 3.
6 designates a latch bolt reciprocably arranged in the upper portion of the case 1 and automatically held in outward position by a pivoted member 7 connected to the rear portion of said latch bolt 6 by a pin 8.
The pivoted member 7 is provided near its upper portion with a hub 9, journaled in the sides of the case 1 and having-a square aperture 10, to receive the usual rectangular spindie of the knobs (not shown), whereby the pivoted member 7 is actuated. A lug 11 integral with the upper portion of the pivoted member 7 bears against the rear end of the latch bolt (3 to normally hold the same in outward position. The lower portion of the pivoted member 7 has two guards 12, spaced apart to straddle the bolt 2 and adapted to close the key hole 5. Said guards are also of suflicient weight to automatically restore the latch bolt 6 to the outward position disclosed by the full lines, Fig. 1, after it has been retracted by swinging the pivoted member 7, to the dotted position by turning the knob spindle.

Said detent 14 has a hub 15, journaled in the sides of the case 1 and adapted to be actuated by a spindle 16 carrying a weighted lever 17 for holding said detent 14 either in the operative full line position, or the inoperative dotted line position disclosed by Fig. 1.
The movement of the detent 14 is re stricted by two lugs 18, against which it is adapted to contact. The weighted lever 17 is so disposed that it will reliably retain the detent 1 1 in the full and dotted line positions.
The spindle 16 is held from longitudinal displacement in the hub 15, by a plate 19, the central opening 20 of which has a lateral recess 21 to admit a lug 22 on said spindle. After the lug 22 is passed through the recess 21, the spindle 16 is rotated to ad-- just said lug out of coincidence with the recess, as disclosed by Fig. 6.
23 designates two interior lugs on the sides of the case 1 to act as stops for the pivoted member 7 and also to prevent a key from rotating in the keyhole to retract the bolt 2, unless the key bit a has two corners cut away to pass said lugs 23.
When the latch bolt 6 only is required to be used, the key bolt 2 is drawn backwardly to an unlocked position by the key A. When the door is to be opened the latch bolt 6 is retracted by turning the knob which swings the pivoted member 7 upward and causes it to retract said latch bolt from its keeper on the door jamb. After the door is opened the latch bolt is automatically thrown outward to be in position to engage its keeper by the pivoted member 7 which swings downward when the knob is released. At night when it is desired to lock the latch bolt in outward position and cover the key hole 5, the weighted lever 17 is swung downward to the full line position, Fig. 1, so that the detent 14 will be raised into engagement with the lug 11 and thus lock the pivoted member 7 in its lowermost position.
In the modified form Fig. 7, the deteiit 14L is mounted upon a pivot 16 and is controlled by a weighted lever 17 extending through a slot 1" in the case 1 From the foregoing description, it is obvious that I have provided a lock which is free from springs, is reliable in operation, and unlikely to get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a lock of the character described, a case having a key-hole therein, a pivoted element having a guard to normally close the key-hole, a latch bolt mounted in the ease and pivotally-connected to said pivoted member, an element on the pivoted member to engage the back of the latch bolt to normally hold the same in outward position, and a detent adapted to engage said element and lock it against the rear end of the latch bolt.
