Be it known that I, EDWARD H. WALSH, a citizen ot' the United States, and resident of Chicago. in thecounty ot' Cook and State of Illinois. ha ve, invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magnetic Grips, of which the following: is a specication.
My invention relates to shearing, punching and stamping machines and has particuf Alar reference to a novel gripping or holdlng device for use in connection therewith.
In the employment of shears, it is wellv known that the material to be sheared must be rigidly held or clamped during the shearing operation. If this is not done, the material will move laterallyA and a curved or To obviate this and at the same time to facilitate production it is common to provide three or more workmen charged'with the duty of retaining the plate or bar in its propel' position during the shearing operation. The reason this facilitates production is that the shearing could not be conducted with rapidity if a mechanical clamp was to be adjusted at each operation.
I have conceived the idea of providing a clamp or hold-down device which operates automatically and with rapidity and eliminates the workmen heretofore required for such holding operation. By the use of my. device it vis only essential to provide such workmen as are necessary to properly dispose the article uponV the bed, whereupon the shear or press is actuated and the article is automatically gripped during the shearinf: operation. The result is secured by providing' a plurality of magnets or magnetic gripping devices located below the surface ofthe bed and connected to a source of electric energy,the means of connection being 'in the form'of an automatic switch associatedwith' the main shaft of the shear and which switch.'l is actuated .or completes a cycle of :its movement during each revolution of the power shaft.

In the drawings I have illustrated the invention as applied to a shear ofthe vertically reciprot-atingr type. include Aframe members 10, a bed l1, to which the lower vshear knife. 12, is rigidly secured. Mounted within the frame is the main power shaft 153. on which the eccentrirs 14. 14. are securec. energized during substantially one half of each cycle of operation oftheshear. The portion of the stroke of the shear during which the magnets are energized is of course the active portion orthat which the shearing operation takes place.

It will be seen that the device as suggested is entirely automatic in its action, requires no attention or manual operation and may be installed at a very slight expense. 0l)- viously modifications may be made in the construction as shown and such modifica- ,"t1ons as are Within the scope of my claims I consider within .the spint of my invention.
