Application filed July i To (175 "IF/[OWL it in (11 com/own v ile itlinown thatl, (loT'rLoi; BINDER, of Rochester. in the county of l'iilonroe and State of r ew York, have inventeiil certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing l'tilachines; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to he a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the aeeonipanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, anal to the IQffllGDCBDU- morals marked thereon.
My invention relates to ironing machines and more particularly to presses of the elass \vliirh embodies a heated heil or platen and work support, one of said parts having movement relatively to the other to bring them into pressing relation with each other,
anil it has for its ol jest to improve the constructioznof this class of machines with a view particularly toadapt-ing an apparatus to the more eliieient finishing of what are known in the trade as work shirts.
l vlore speeiti'cally, the invention resides in the application of certain improvements to en ironing machine for use in shirt thetories, for the production of work shirts, Where it is desirable to finish a shirt at a single operation as quickly and economically as possible, aft-er it has already been made and folded. A work shirt is finished by sub- Y ing the folded shirt to a pressing oper :ition, end it flllillwl purpose er my invening the shirt and smoothingthe surfs-2e thereof immediately prior to the final To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements'and coinoinations of parts all as will be hereinafter inore fully desoribed, the novel features-being pointed out in the claims atthe. end of the specification.
In the (li awingsz Figure l is a. side View of ii machineconstrnteel in accordance with a preferrecleinbodiment of my invention;

designates a spring arranged at the bottom of the sleeve d and engaged by a follower it which is mounted on a spindle 2',
the latter being adjustably threaded in the casting a as shown in Fig. 6. The casting a is also provided with posts which engage suitable guiding openings in the turret and are surrounded by springs /t' that are arranged between the casting a and the turret so as to cushion the downward movement of the work support when it is lowered, as will be described presently.
The work support is elevated into ongagement with the heated bed by a means that will later be set forth and I will now describe the means for retaining the shirt in position and for smoothing and straightening the surface thereof prior to the pressing operation. To accomplish this, I employ a flexible plate, preferably of metal, that is normally elevated above the work support. The plate may be of arched formation so that as it is brought downwardly into flattened engagement with the shirt, it will progressively engage the upper surface of the latte and in this manner serve to stretch it more or less and re move the folds or wrinkles that have re sulted from previous handling. The board g is provided with a pair of arms or brackets Z in which is mounted the spindle m. H designates the flexible plate that is provided with arms a which are journaled upon the spindle m. The plate H is normally elevated above the work support, so as to permit of r adily positioning a shirt, and
for this purpose I employ a rest 0 which is mounted on a stationary bracket 7) and c n'ved to conform substantially to the normal curvature of the plate H. In order to retain the flexible plate against the rest 0, the latter may be provided with retaining means for this purpose, and in the present embodiment I have illustrated a convenient device that cobperates successfully with a metal plate and "consists of a permanent magnet Upon positioning a shirt on the work support the plate H drawn away from the retaming device and let down upon the shirt, first assuming the position shown in Fig. 6, after which the free end of the plate is pulled toward the work support causing the plate to progressively and gradually come into contact with the up per surface of the shirt until it is in fiattened engagement, as shown in Figs. 4 and The plate is provided with a handlem and also with a latch 8 adapted i) engage,
a pro ectionf on the board and to thereby hold the plate in flattened engagement as to its vertical position in engagement with the retaining magnet g. In Fig. 5, there appears in dotted lines an outline of the usual formation of a folded work shirt, and in order to'prevent the collar points from being pressed into the body portion of the shirt, I may employ supplemental plates such as shown at w to bear-ranged between the body portion at the front of the shirt and the collar points, thereby preventing the formation of imsightly ridges or creases.
In Fig. 1, one of the work supports is shown in pressing position while the remaining one is out of pressing position. The turret is held in proper position by means of a spring actuated lockingbolt a which cooperates with corresponding recesses 7) on the turret. The locking bolt a carries a head 0' at its lower end and cooperating therewith is an arm (1 fixed upon a shaft c which is automatically rocked to lower the locking bolt and release the turret as the work support is lowered away from the heated bed. The work support is elevated by means of a projection 7" carried by a a pivoted lever 51, which is operated by suitable treadle controlled mechanism, and engages the sleeve or socket d, elevating the latter, and with it the work support when the treadle h is depressed. '5 designates a releasing treadle which carries a slotted arm j coiiperating with a pin is on an arm Z fixed upon the shaft 0. lVhe-n the treadle z" is lowered, it causes the treadle 7? to be released, permitting the work support to be lowered away from the heated bed and at the same time releasing the turret so that it :an be rotated to reverse the positions of the work supports.
It is to be understood that my invention is not to be limited to the precise arrangement herein disclosed, for I intend to cover by this application any modifications or adaptations'of the novel features that are contemplated by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an ironing machine, the combination with a heated bed, of a work support, a flexible plate pivotallymounted at one end of the support substantially coeirtensive with the latter and adapted to entirely cover the work on the support, and means for holding the opposite end of the plate in engagement with the work support.
2. In an ironing machine, the combination with a heated bed, of a work support, a
means for holding said freeend of theplate in engagement withthe support.
3. In an ironing machine, the combination with .a heated bed, of a work support, a flexible platepivotallymounted on the support substantially coextensive with the latter, and
adapted to entirely cover the Work 'on the support, said plate being normally arched away from the support, and means for holding the plate in flattened engagement with thegsupport.
4. In an ironing machine, the combinae flexible plate pivotally mounted at one end to the Work support substantially coextensive with the latter and adapted to entirely carried by the plate at its opposite end and hav ng engagement with the work support. '6.- In an ironing machine, the combination with a heated bed, oi a work support, a-
flexible plate pivotally mountedat one end to the work support, and means cooperating with the'plate to hold it elevated on the work support.' a
7. In an ironing machine, the combination .with a heated bed, of a work support, a
flexible metal plate pivotally mounted at one end on the work support, and a magnet cooperating with the plate to hold it elevated on the support. 7 GOTTLOB BINDER.
