IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,555, dated October 3, 1871; antedated September 16, 1871.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABEL H. BARTLETT, of Spuyten Duyvil, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Folding-Guide, Binder, and Hemmer 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in attachments for sewing-machines designed for folding, binding, and hemming; and consists in a certain novel construction and combination of devices, as hereinafter described, and as specified in the claims.

Figure l is a perspective View of the said improved attachingplate with the folding devices. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved attaching plate with devices for forming a binding out of the cloth that is bound. Fig. 3 is a side elevation with binding attachments for plain binding, the said attachments being partly sectioned. Fig. 4 is a side and sectional view of the plate with the hemming attachments.

A is a base-plate, and H a slotted plate attached thereto by a clamp-screw, J, for attaching plate A to the plate of the machine, the joint being to admit of turning plate H as may be required for attaching to different machines, which attachment is made by a clamp-screw passing through slot I. E is a spring-bar, hinged to plate A at K, and provided with an adjusting-screw, F. This plate is employed for holding the folds in place until the needle enters them. W is a support for the several attachments to be employed for the different kinds of work, and X a clamp-screw therein for securing the said articles thereto. This support is placed at the front edge ofthe plate A, a little to the right of the line in which the seam is formed. B represents a plane plate; C, a scroll; and D, another scroll, arranged, as shown in Fig. l, for turning the edges of coats, vests, and blind-bands, the latter for trimmingl mourning goods 5 all these pieces have plane slotted shanks, as indicated by B', C', and D2, for attaching them to the support W by the clamp-- screw x. By these devices the edges of two pieces of cloth being sewed together may be turned under, as indicated by the diagrams c bc, and a blind-band, d, may be formed. The width of the band will be gauged by the plate B, and the positions of the folds` relatively to one another will be governed by the position of plate D. The scroll D has the left-hand end Dl bent upward and backward, to serve as a guide for the edge of the cloth turned over, and the other end turned from the right upward and toward the left over part D1, for folding the edge of the upper piece of cloth over. The scroll C has the left-hand end turned downward and backward, to provide space for the edge of the lower piece, and at the right is a concave or curved projection, c,fronting this space, for foldingthe edge of the piece over. The plate B may be dispensed with except when making blind-bands. L is a scroll for folding the edge of the cloth being sewed to form the binding. It comprises two bars, c, attached, to the slotted shank f, in the form of the tines of a fork, which bars are bent inward at g and run back a short distance parallel with the outer parts, one terminating at h, but the other is connected to a U-shaped piece, c', a little above the center. The prongs of this piece extend toward the left between the outer and inner parts of the bars c, nearly to the bends of the said bars. This forms a complex scroll, by which the cloth being sewed will be rst folded back under its under side, then around the edge and back over the upper side, and lastly the edge will be turned under the part folded on the upper side, all as clearly indicated by the diagram Z.

For folding a piece of braid over the edge of the cloth in the ordinary way, l employ the two plates M, one of which has a wide slot which will allow the plate to drop down over the support W, and the part M to rest on the top of said support for securing thereto by the clamp-screw w, which passes through a long slot in said part M". The other plate M is also slotted, and lies above part Mf, and has a stud, m, passing through the slot of the part M for retaining it in place. Each of these plates has a hooked end, m, for guiding the edges of the binding, clearly shown in dotted lines j, Fig. 3. These plates may be adjusted forward and backward across the line of the seam for binding of different widths.

The hemming devices comprise the slotted plate P, scroll-plate Q, and the plate R, the plate,

P being tted to the support W, having a steadypin, T, taking in a hole in the plate A behind the support W, and extending a considerable distance from said support to the left, thence bending` downward nearly to the plate A, and extending backward nearly to the support W. The plate Q has a slot for the screw X, and a scrollshaped end, S, for turning the hem, said scroll being formed so as to project down through a Vertical slot in the plate P when plate Q is placed above it, and the plate R being of an ogee-form, with one end fitted in a slot of the upper part of plate P and the other end in a slot of the lower part of P, while at V it springs down underY the scroll S, and at tit springs up in front of the scroll. It is employed for supporting the cloth by the part t when wide hems are being made; but when making narrow heIns it is moved away to the outer or left-hand end of plate P.

The end U ofthe support is concaved for sewing, as a guide for the fold in making hems or binding, as in Fig. 2.
