Description

I J. l COLES.
I Binder for Sewing Machines.
No. 110,740. I Patented Jany 3,187].
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB L. GOLES, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BINDERS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0.110,740, dated January 3, 1871.
I, JACOB L. (Jones, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented certain Improved Attachments to Binders for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to improvements in guides for laying a binding on hat-brims, 850.;
' and consists in the arrangement, in relation to the U-shaped folder which turns the binding and recei ves the li at-brim, of an adj ustablehook and an adjustable edge-gage, whereby one edge of the binding may be presented to the hat-brim and sewed thereto by the needle of the sewing-machine.
My invention also consists in providing the folded piece of metal over which the binding is turned, and which also receives within it the hat-brim, with an adjustable gage, whereby a metallic or other strip of material may be laid on the edge of the hat-brim and in position to be covered with the binding.
The accompanyingdrawing shows a binder with my invention attached.
Figure 1 shows an edge view thereof. Fig. 2 shows adjustable edged gage detached. Fig. at is a top View of the binder, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the usual adjustable backpiece for adapting the gage to different thicknesses of binding.
A is the base-plate of the binding guide, provided at its end with aforked standard, B, to receive a nut, O, threaded to receive the screw 0, secured to a bar, I), attached to a block, a. This bar and block are adjustable, with relation to the base A, by means of the screw 0 and nut O, and to the under side of this block and bar is secured a bar, 1, to the forward end of which the U-shaped binding folder and guide J are attached.
The bars I) i are each slotted, and sustain and receive the usual adj ustable hooks e f for the edge of the binding.
Arranged between the block a and the bar 1' is an adjustable slotted guide, 9, held in position by the set-screw G.
At times it is desirable to pass the binding through the guide while lying flat on the bed A and present its edge in aposition under the part J, which receives the hat-brim, so that the edge may be sewed to the brim and to provide for the correct placing of the binding on the brim the adjustable guide 9 and hook f are used. 7
On the upper member of the folded portion J is an adjustable guide, K, adapted to direct between its edges and the back of J a metallic or other strip of filling, laying such strip on the edge of the brim passing through J, and so as to be covered by the binding passing over the back of J, and guided by the adjustable hooks e f.
Fig. 3 shows a top view of the U-shaped guide for turning the binding and guiding the hat-brim detached from its bar 2', and also a view of the adjustable gage that fits over the upper portion of J, and serves to guide the metallic or other strip of filling, and present it to the edge of the brim and within the fold of the binding.
It is considered unnecessary to describe the construction in detail of the binder, as such construction in the main is well known to those acquainted with such attachments; but,
Having described my improvement sufficiently in detail, I claim. and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The arrangement, with relation to the folding guide J and block a, of adjustable hook f and gage g, as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the guide J, over which the binding is folded and which guides the hat-brim, of the guide K, arranged within the same to receive and guide a strip of filling on the edge of the brim and within the binding, as described.
JACOB L. OOLES.
