IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-DRIERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 119,539, dated October 3, 1871.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE C. SMITH, of Hamilton, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented certain improvements in the manner of hanging out clothes to dry; the design of my invention is to obviate the necessity of going out of the house for the purpose, of which invention the following is a specification:

My invention relates to the combination of a sheaved pulley and two cog-wheels, which are so arranged that a clothes-line with clothes hung thereon and clothes-pins fastening the same can be carried or moved round the said combination pulley without throwing the line oft', and a device for tightening the line.

Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 represents one of the cog-wheels; K, the sheaved or grooved pulley. Fig. 3 represents the device for tightening the line. A represents the ground whereon the posts B B B B are set.

A represents a ground plat; b b b b, posts set in the ground; c, a brace under which the tightener is fastened; d, the sheaved pulley fastened loosely on the end ofthe lever; e, a semicircular plate perforated near the circumference line; j', a lever; g g g, cog-wheels; h h h, brackets, in the end of which pins are fastened on which the cogwheels (with a sheaved pulley between) revolve; I, the clothes-line; j j j, clothes-pins; k, the intermediate sheaved pulley; L L, clothes; m, the point to which the lever is drawn in order to tighten the line; n n, pins to keep the lever in its place; o, the fulcrum for lever; p, the handle bywhich the sheaved pulley d is moved and the line transmitted round the cogged-wheels g g g.

What I claim as my invention and improvement in clothes-driers is- The pulley g in three parts, as described, attached to the side rail c and posts b by brackets H, in combination with the tightening device E and D and cord J, and for the purposes set forth.
