To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL F. FERNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bench-Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bench Vises.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved vise adapted to be adjusted to operative position at the side of the bench or swung to inoperative position below the bench. Second, to provide an improved vise adapted to be adjusted to operative position at the edge of the bench so that it coacts with the edge of the bench and projects above the edge to serve as a bench dog or may be swung to inoperative position below the bench. Third, to provide a structure having these advantages which is simple in its parts and very convenient to manipulate.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a perspective view of my improved bench vise with the jaw frame adjusted to operative position. Fig. II is an inverted view of my improved bench vise applied to a bench with the jaw frame adjusted t0 operative position. Fig. III is a detail vertical longitudinal section on a line corresponding to line 83 of Fig. II, parts being shown in full lines. Fig. IV is a detail vertical transverse section on a line corresponding to line 4.-4: of Figs. II and III. Fig. V is a detail section on a line" corresponding to line 55 of Fig. II.
In the drawing, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a work bench in connection with which I have illustrated my improved vise in order to show the manner of its use. The vise sup-- port, in the structure illustrated, comprises a pair of support members 2 having bearings 3 at their rear ends and downwardly projecting keepers 4: at their front ends. These supports are secured to the under side of the table 1 in an opposed relation by means of the screws 5. The jaw frame 6 is provided with journals 7 arranged in the bearings 3 so that the j aw frame is pivotally supported and may be swung to a horizontal operative posltion or swung to an inoperative position below the bench.
The jaw frame is provided with opposed groove-like ways 7. for the slide 8 of the jaw 9.- The cross piece 10 at the front end of the aw frame is curved downwardly and provided with a threaded hole 11 for the jaw adjusting screw 12. The cross piece thus constitutes a nut for the screw. The screw is j ournaled or rotatably connected at 13 to the j aw'so that by rotating the screw the j aw is moved back and forth. The screw is provided with a handle 14. The jaw frame is supported in its erected position with the jaw in coacting relation to the edge of the bench, as shown in Fig. III, by means of the latch bar 15, which is mounted on the pivot 16 carried by the cross bar 10. See Figs. II and IV. The latch bar is provided with a hand piece 17 by means of which it can be conveniently swung into and out of engagement with the keepers 4.
When the latch bar is engaged with the keepers the jaw frame is locked securely in its erected position to support the jaw in position for use. The jaw 9 preferably proj ects above the upper surface of the bench so that it may be used as a bench dog. IVhen, however, the latch is released, the jaw frame swings down below the bench entirely out of the way.
My improved vise is very simple and economical in structure and at the same time is strong and durable and very convenient to use.
I have illustrated an embodiment which I find very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate certain modifications or adaptations of my improvements which I contemplate, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as conditions may require.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a vise, the combination with abench, of a support comprising a pair of members mounted on the under side of said bench and having opposed bearings at their rear ends and opposed depending keepers at their front ends, a jaw frame journaled in said bearings and having a jaw slide-way therein and a nut, a jaw having a slide disposed in said way, a jaw adjusting screw rotatably connected to said jaw to coact with said nut, and a latch bar pivotally mounted on said jaw frame to coact with said keepers when said frame is in its erected position whereby the jaw is supported in a coacting relation to the edge of the bench with its upper end projecting above the surface of the bench, said jaw frame being adapted to swing downwardly below the bench when the latch bar is disengaged.
2. In a vise, the combination of a support comprising a pair of members adapted to be mounted on the under side of a bench and having opposed bearings at their rear ends and opposed depending keepers at their front ends, a jaw frame journaled in said bearings and having a jaw slide-way therein and a nut, a jaw having a slide disposed in said way, a jaw adjusting screw rotatably connected to said jaw to coact with said nut, and a latch bar pivotally mounted on said jaw frame to coact with said keepers when said frame is in its erected position.
3. In a vise, the combination with a bench, of a support mounted on the under side of said bench and provided with a keeper, a jaw frame pivotally mounted on said support and having a jaw slide-way therein and a nut, a jaw having a slide disposed in said way, a jaw adjusting screw rotatably connected to said jaw to coact with said nut, and a latch bar pivotally mounted on said jaw frame to coact with said keeper when said frame is in its erected position whereby the jaw is supported in a coacting relation to the edge of the bench with its upper end projecting above the surface of the bench, said jaw frame being adapted to swing downwardly below the bench when the latch is disengaged.
l. In a vise, the combination of a support adapted to be mounted on the under side of a bench and provided with a keeper, a jaw frame pivotally mounted on said support and having a jaw slide way therein and a nut, a jaw having a slide disposed in said way, a jaw adjusting screw rotatably connected to said jaw to coact with said nut, and a latch bar pivotally mounted on said jaw frame to coact with said keeper when said frame is in its erected position.
5. In a vise, the combination with a bench,
of a support mounted on the under side of said bench, a jaw frame pivotally mounted on said support, and a jaw adjustably mounted on said jaw frame, said jaw frame being adapted to be swung to operative position to support the jaw at the side of the bench or to be swung to inoperative position below the bench.
6. In a vise, the combination with a support adapted to be mounted on the under side of a bench, a jaw frame pivotally mounted on said support, a jaw adjustably mounted on said frame, and means for supporting said jaw frame in operative position, said frame being adapted to swing below the bench on which it is mounted when said supporting means are disengaged.
