To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IRVING E. SCHIEK, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rhinelander, in the county of Oneida and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Display- Boxes, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this speci fication. v r

This invention has for its object to provide a container for berries, small fruits and the like which will protect the contents from dust and dirt, though permitting of ready inspection thereof.

Another object of the invention is to provide such a container formed of a single fiat blank of sheet material such as paper which will be convenient for shipping and which may be readily folded to form the box ready for filling and may then be securely sealed by the interlocking relation of its parts and without the necessity for the use of adhesives.

Another object of the invention is to provide a shipping box of this character of a folded blank sheet of paper or the likewith the folds so arranged as to give strength and rigidity to the box structure; and preferably so as to provide a concave or recessed bottom that will permit of the boxes being packed one upon another in a shipping crate without subjecting the transparent box top or the contents of the box to the pressure of the boxes thereabove. With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the sanitary display box as herein claimed and all equivalents.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts in the different views,

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sanitary display box constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view thereof on the plane of line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a bottom view thereof; Fig. 5 is a bottom view with the flaps opened out ready to receive the contents; and Fig. 6 is a view of the flat blank from which the box is formed.

In these drawings 10' indicates the top I panel of the box which may be square or oblong in shape, but which forms the center of a blank, as shown in Fig. 6, with four correspondingly shaped side panels 11 uniting with 1ts edges along creased fold lines 12 so that they may be bent at right angles thereto to constitute the sides of the box. The rectangular parts of the blank lying between the adjacent side panels 11 have diagonal creased fold lines 14 extending from the corners of the top panel 10 upon which, and the extension of the fold lines 12, these rectangular portions are bent to form double triangular folds 13 which are brought inside of the box as the sides 11 are bent up at right angles to the top panel 10 and have their cornerstucked through vertical slits 15 at the bottom edges of the side panels 1.1. These bottom edges of the side panels 11 do not form the edges of the blank, for each of such side panels is provided with a dip at thls edge, short flaps l6 uniting with the edges of two opposite side panels along double. fold lines 17, while larger flaps l8 and 19 unite with the edges of the other side panels 11 respectively along double fold lines 20, the flap 18 being provided with a tongue 21 and the flap 19 with a slit 22 to take the tongue and also with an extension flap 23 united with its outer edge along a fold line 24.

The top panel 10 is desirably provided I provide ventilating openings, and these may be formed in the blank wherever desired, and as here shown consist of openings 27 in the top panel 10 around the central opening 25 thereof.

Though the boxes of this invention are for convenience shipped in the blank sheet condition shown in Fig. 6 with or without the transparent covering for the large opening in the top panel, when they are desired for use they are quickly bent up into the box form by drawing the corner folds 13 inwardly and tucking them successively into therefrom determined by the width of the '20 thereof, and the tongu extension flap 23 and the space between the double fold lines 20. Next the flap 18 is likewise folded into the box and against the flap 19, being correspondingly spaced from the edges of the side panels according to the distance between the double fold lines e 21 is inserted through the slit 22. Finally the short flaps 16 are'folded inwardly against the

18 and 19 as positioned by-the space between their double fold lines 17 and the corners thereof are tucked within oblique slits 28 of the

flaps

18 and 19 respectively, and thus all parts are securely sealed together. The boxes filled and sealed may be packed together in a shipping crate, one upon another, without injury to the contents, as the hollow or recessed bottom of each box assures suflicient space between the boxes to prevent pressure upon the contents or upon the windowed tops of the boxes, the weight of each column of boxes and their contents being supported by the side walls thereof. These side walls are braced by the double folds 13 which extend from each upper cor- 35 bottom rim or flange of the box and enables it to withstand the handling to which the box' is subjected. The box is furthermore rigidly braced at the corners of the base by the

Obviously, the box of the present invention is not confined-to the particular use mentioned, for containing berries and small fruits, but it is capable of use in the packaging of various food products which it may be desirable to have open for inspection without permitting handling, or which it is desired ,to protect from dust or the drying influence of air. Thus the invention is suit able for use in packaging sandwiches and lunches generally, and the box may be made of any size and proportions suitable to the particular purpose for which it may be in tended.

Though the thickness of the material is greatly exaggerated in the drawing for clearness of illustration, it will be understood that the construction of the box is such that it may be made of comparatively light paper board, or even a heavy grade of paper, and will still have the requisite strength to retain its shape during shipment and handling because of the strengthening reinforcement given thereto by the arrangement of folds and flaps as described. What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;

forced spacing extensions beneath a raised bottom, comprising a slngle paper blank with a generally rectangular central portion divided by horizontal and vertical parallel fold lines into nine rectangular panels, the central one constituting the top panel and the four panels adjoining the edges thereof constituting the side panels, and the panels between the edges of the side panels constituting cornerfolds adapted to be doubled upon themselves along -d1agonal fold lines extending from the corners of the top panel and adapted when folded together to be passed through slits in the side panels, and interlocking flaps at the ends of the side panels united therewith along spaced double fold lines to fold within the box and form a raised bottom therefor, the extension formed between the lower edges of the side panels and the portions between the double together to form triangular braces at the corners of the box and to have their free ends passed through slits in the side panels, and interlocking flaps on the ends of the side panels uniting therewith along spaced double old lines, the pair of flaps of opposite side' panels adapted to fold together, one having an extension flap adapted to fold into the crease between the other and its side panel and also having a slit to receive 'a tongue of the other, and the other pair of flaps adapted to have their corners inserted through slits of the first mentioned pair of flaps to form v meaaw the box bottom therewith, said box bottom being raised above the level of the lower edges of the side panels and the lower edges of the corner folds by reason of the space between the fold lines of the flaps.

4. A sanitary display shipping box for berries and the like, comprising a paper box of a single sheet blank forming a top panel having an inspection opening therethrough, side panels united with the edges of the top panel along fold lines, corner folds between the side panels and united therewith along fold lines and adapted to fold together within the box and have their free ends inserted through slits in the side panels, interlocking sealing flaps on the ends of the side panels united therewith along spaced double fold lines to form a sealing head within the box and spaced above the lower edges of the side panels and the lower edges of the corner folds, and a transparent covering for the inspection opening of the top panel.

5. A sanitary display shipping box for berries or the like, comprising a paper box of a single sheet blank forming a top panel with a display opening therethrough, side panels uniting with the edges of the top panel along fold lines, corner folds uniting with the slde panels along fold lines and adapted to be folded together within the box and have their free ends passed through slits in the side panels, interlocking sealing flaps at the edges of the side panels uniting therewith along spaced double fold lines, one pair of opposite sealing flaps being provided with a tongue on the edge of one fitting in a slit of the other and an extension flap on said other to fit in the crease between the first mentioned flap and its side panel and the other pair of sealing flaps adapted to have their corners inserted through slits in the first mentioned pair of sealing flaps, the interlocking and sealing flaps forming a head for the box above the lower edges of the side panels and the lower edges of the corner flaps, and a transparent covering for the inspection opening of the top panel.
