RAILWAY-BRAKE APPLIANCE.
Application filed November 17, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tyler, in the county of Smith, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Brake Appliances; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in railway brake appliances and particularly to devices used in connection with the brake piston.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device for indicating the position of the brake piston without the necessity for crawling under the car.
Another object is to provide a device by means of which the position of the brake piston can be seen from either side of the car, whether the piston is carried by the side sill or the center sill, without the usual inconvenient necessity of crawling under the car to observe the position of the piston.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the sill of a'car showing the application of my improved indicator to the brake piston when carried by the center sill; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. at is a section similar to Fig. 3 showing the use of the device when applied to a brake piston mounted on the side sills.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the side sills of a railway car, in each of which is formed a longitudinally extending slot 11, the slot of one sill being directly opposite the slot of the other sill.
Mounted on the small center sills 10 beneath the car and in such position that it can not be seen from the side of the car on account of the large side sills, is the brake Specification of Letters Patent.

cylinder 12 provided with the piston 13. Carried by the outer end of the piston is a collar 14: formed with a pair of radially extending arms 15. To each of these arms is secured a rod 16 which extends toward the side of the car and through the slot 11 of i one of the sills. The outer end of the rod is turned upwardly, as shown at 17. At one end of the slot is formed the letter R and at the other end the letter S, meaning released and set respectively. The rods move with the piston, and by observing the position of the upturned portions of the rods, the position of the piston can be determined at a glance. Thus the necessity for crawling under the car, to observe the piston, which is located inwardly of the sill, and out of sight at the side of the car, is entirely eliminated.
The device is adapted for use in connection with side or center sills.
When the brake cylinder is mounted on the large side sills 10, as seen in Fig. A, onl one arm 18 is carried by the collar 14, the rod 16' extending through the slot 11' of the sill, and having its outer end turned upwardly as seen at 17. In this form the device would appear from the opposite side of the car in the same manner as the other forms, and as seen in Fig. 1.

The combination with the longitudinally slotted sills of a railway car and a brake piston rod mounted therebetween, of a member including a centrally socketed boss portion and oppositely extending arm portions secured to one end of the piston rod, and arms secured to the ends of the first named arms and disposed through the slots of the sills for longitudinal slidable movement, said sills being properly marked to be traversed by the ends of the last named arms and thgreby indicate the position of the piston ro In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
