Description

G. 0. PARMELEE.
COMBINED BENCH STOP AND DOG.
APPLICATION FILED MAY II, 1916.
Patented Aug. 15, 1916.
lululnlnlnlw \IIIII)IIIIIIII= GEORGE O. PARMELEE, OF WAKEFIELD, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED BENCH STOP AND DOG.
Specification of Letters Batent.
Patented Au 15, 1916.
Application filed May 17, 1916. Serial No. 98,085.
T 0 all whom, it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. PARMELEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at IVakefield, in the county of Gogebic and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Bench Stops and Dogs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to appliances for carpenters benches, and has particular reference to a combined bench dog and stop.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a bench appliance which may be employed by carpenters, not only upon the permanent benches in shops, but may be advantageously used by workmen on housebuilding jobs or repair jobs, where, at best only temporary benches are used or where a small plank or board may be employed as a base for supporting boards to be planed, grooved, or otherwise operated upon.
More particularly, my invention has for its object to provide a device which is a combination of a bench dog and stop, so that it is adapted to be used in various combinations, either singly, in pairs, or in combination with a bench stop of automatic type.
\Vith the above purposes in view, and such others as will hereinafter appear, my invention will now be set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In said drawingsz--Figure 1 is a plan view of one of the devices embodying my invcntion, showing it in use, Fig. 2 is a front elevation, Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, and Fig. 4: is a plan view, showing another application of my device.
Referring more particularly to said drawings, 1 denotes a metallic body whose opposite ends are extended into tapering arms 2. The ends of said arms are provided with downwardly extending feet 3, whose free ends are bladed with suflicient edge to permit them to be driven into a bench top or a plank. Extending from one side of the body 1 is an enlongated lever arm 4, said arm 4 being of considerably greater length than the body 1 and terminating at its outer extremity in a dog head 5, which extends at right angles to the lever arm 1 and is ta pered to provide a cutting edge which will bite into the end of a board or plank. The arm 4 extends from the body 1 in a horizon tal plane which is common to the latter, so that it is spaced from the surface upon which the dog is used when the feet 3 are driven straight into the bench surface.
From the above it will be evident that when the widely separated feet 3 are driven. into the plank surface, and the dog head 5 is engaged with the end of a board, which is suitably braced at its opposite ends, as against a bench stop or another of the devices above described, the board will be firmly braced against lateral or longitudinal movement While the board is being operated upon.
On the side opposite the levervarm 4, the body is provided with a plurality of teeth 6 of the form usually employed in bench stops. Said teeth extend along the entire side of the body 1 and do not project far beyond the longitudinal axis of the body 1 drawn through the arms 2. When the device is driven into a bench surface with the teeth 6 opposite the end of the board which is to be worked, the combined support'afforded by the grip of the feet 3 in the bench surface and the bearing of the dog head 5 at the extremity of the lever arm 1 upon the bench, provides a firm and positive stop to any longitudinal movement of the board relative to the bench under severe usage.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that by my improved construction, I have provided a simple tool which combines all the advantages of the ordinary bench dog and bench stop, and that the same may be used in various combinations, either in pairs, or in combination with the ordinary bench stops, and that the device may be used singly, either as dogs or stop's.
What I claim as my invention is A combination bench stop and dog consisting of a body, arms extending from the opposite ends of said bodyand terminating in feet for engaging a Working surface, a lever arm also extending from said body and terminating in a right angular projected dog head for engaging apiece of work, said feet and said dog head providing widely separated triangularly arranged points of engagement, and a set of stop teeth formed In testimony whereof I afiix my signaupon the side of said body opposite said leture, in the presence of two Witnesses.
V61 arm whereby said dog head may coop- GEORGE O. PARMELEE. erate With said feet to brace said body When Vitnesses:
5 said stop teeth are engaged by a piece of ANDREW F. OLsoN,
Work. J OSEPH KOLAR.
