Be it known that L'HARRY J. Hicii, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county'of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing Appliances, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a filing appliance for sales billsand other similar papers. in which a plurality of bill holders are operatively mounted in a fire-proof case comprising a rectangular base section and a similar cover section adapted to be swung on the base section to incasethe bill holders when closed, and to form a back for the same when opened.

In a former application, filed June 1, 1914, Serial No. $1,976, a filing appliance of this type or character has been illustrated, described and claimed, in which a series of hinged bill holders and an index frame are pivoted to the rim of the rear end of the cover section of the ease; and in two subsequent applications, filed respectively, June 8, 191A Serial No. 843 602, and June 9, 1914:, Serial No. $3,962, iiling appliances of this type or character have been illustrated, described and claimed, in which a second series of hinged bill holders are carried on a trayhaving operative connections with the index frame for swinging the tray to and fro, and means for guiding the forward end of the tray over and upon the forward rim of the base section, to bring the second series of holders into'operative position when the index frame is rotated into upright position.-

The object of the'present invention is to provide a single or continuous series of hinged bill holders in such a case, with supporting, guiding and counter-balancing means so that a portion of the series will be carried downward and rearward into the base section of the case, when the cover section is closed downward thereon, and so that the forward ends of'all the bill holders of the entire series will be carried upward and forward into operative position when the cover section is rotated into upright position on the base section of the case. The object of the invention, thus set forth in general terms, is attained by the embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 1s a side elevation of the case,

The case is composed of the substantially similar rectangular bottom or base section 1, and the top orcover section 2, which are operatively connected together, by means of the guiding hinge brackets 3, one being located oneach side of the rear endportion of cover section can berotated and shifted upon the base section to aline eitherth'etop orthe rear end of the cover sectionwith the rear end of the base section.

The series of bill holders 4 and 4:, are hinged together at the lower rear ends, and the pivots 5, between two adjoining intermediate holders iand' 4"" are mounted in the bearing 6, secured on the rear end rim of the cover section sothat the upper rear holders 4 of the series may bei-eferred to as. the upper division thereof, and the lower forward holders 4 of the series, may be referredto as the lowerdivision thereof.

The lower forward bill holder P of the series, is pivoted at 7., to the rear end of the frame 8, which may carry an index, not shown, for the bill holders, or may form a table for writing or'other use, or may be considered merely as a tray for supporting the p superposed bill holders at certain times. Rollers 9, are ournaled on each side of the forward end of the frame 8, and inclined tracks 10 are secured on each inner side of the side wall of the base section of the case, upon which tracks the rollers are adapted to rest when the frame 8 is carried downward and rearward into the base section by its rear end pivotal connection with the series of holders, when the cover section is closed downward upon the base section as shown in Fig. 2. In this relation of the parts the bill holders are all superposed upon the frame 8, the rear ends of the holders and the frame being carried on or supported by the intermediate hinge pivot 5 in the bearing 6 secured to the rear rim of the cover section, and the forward ends of the holders and frame being supported by the rollers 9 resting upon the lower rear ends of the tracks 10 secured to the side walls of the base section of the case, all as shown in said Fig. 2.

lVhen the cover section of the case is rotated into upright position and its rear end shifted forward upon the base section, it is evident that the holders and the underlying frame 8, will be carried bodily forward, and the tracks 10 are so positioned that the rollers 9, riding thereon, will carry the forward end of the frame and superposed holders, upward and forward and finally over and upon the forward rim of the base section, into the operative position shown in Fig. 8, in which position the forward ends of all the holders are located above the rim of the base section of the case and are therefore accessible for the operation of the holders, singly or collectively, on their hinged rear ends.

lVhen the cover section of the case is swung upward upon the rear end of the base section thereof, it is evident that the holders 4, B and P, in the upper division of the series may be rotated upon their hinged ends into upright position, either singly or collectively; in which upright position the upper rear holder 1 of this division of the series is sustained and guided by the roller abutments 11, provided one in each side of the cover section, and the for ward holder 45*, thereof, is supported by the pivotal bearing 6, on the rear rim of the cover section as shown in Fig. 4:, so that the rotated holders of this division, will be maintained in upright position by the action of gravity in the manner well known in this art.

Contracting and swinging supporting connections are provided on each side between the rear end of the index frame 8 and the side walls of the cover section, for raising and sustaining the rear end of this frame and the superposed holders 4, l and 4, when one or more of these holders are rotated upon their hinged ends into upright position, as shown for all the holders of this division in Fig. 5. Each of these supports may be composed of the slide rod 12, pivoted at 13 to the rear end of the frame 8, and having a cross-head 14: on its upper end; and the cooperating rods 15, secured to the bracket 16, carried on the pivots 17, secured to the side wall of the cover section of the case, the said rods 15 having a sliding engagement with the cross-head 1 1 on the upper end of the rod 12, and being provided at the lower ends with the cross-head 18, having a sliding engagement with said rod 12. Compression springs 19, are provided around the several rods between the crossheads 14 and 18 thereon, and it is evident that the energy of these springs will act to contract the length of the connection be tween the pivoted ends thereof.

The parts are so proportioned and arranged that when the cover section is swung upward upon the base section of the case, the swinging supports will be contracted by a compression of the springs 19, as shown in Fig. 1, and it is evident that when one or more of the bill holders 4, 1 and 4 are rotated on their hinged ends into upright position, as shown for all these holders in Fig. 5, the swinging and contracting of the supports will carry the rear end of the frame 8, upon which the rear end of the lower end frame 4 is pivotally supported, upward and forward; and that the energy of the compression springs tending to further contract the swinging supports will serve to sustain in upright position the holders of the second division which have been rotated into such position, as shown for all these holders in Fig. 5; in which operation of the parts it is also evident that the swinging movement of the rear end of the frame 8, will cause the forward end thereof to slide forward and rearward upon the forward rim of the base section of the case.

In event the pendent support for the rear end of the frame is fully contracted when all the bill holders are rotated into upright position and the frame 8 remains in reclined position, as shown in Fig. 5, the bearing for the bracket 16, on the pivot 17, is elongated downwardto form the slot 20, so that this bracket may slide upward upon the pivot to accommodate the contracted relation of the parts when the cover section of the case is swung downward upon the base section thereof to bring all the parts in reclined position, as shown in Fig. 2.

It will be understood that the use of a distinctive frame, illustrated herein as an index frame, on the lower end of the series of bill holders is not an essential feature of the broader invention, for it is evident that the functions of such a frame can be performed by the lower bill holder of the series; but the use of such an index frame is preferred, as a matter of convenience, construction and operation.

I claim:

1. A filing case including similar base and cover sections with guiding hinge connections for swinging and shifting the cover section upon the base section, and a series of hinged holders mounted in the case and having its hinged end pivoted intermediate the end holders to the cover section.

2. A filing case including similar base and cover sections with guiding hinge connections for swinging and shifting the cover section upon the base section, and a series of hinged holders mounted in the case-and having its hinged end pivoted intermediate the end holders to the cover section, with means in the base section for supporting and guiding the free ends of the holders upward and forward from within the base section over the forward rim thereof.

3. A filing case including similar base and cover sections with guiding hinge connections for swinging and shifting the cover section upon the base section, a series of hinged holders mounted in the case and having its hinged end pivoted intermediate the end holders to the cover section, and a frame having its rear end pivoted to the hinged end of the lower holder of the series, with means for support-ing and guiding the free end of the frame upward and forward from within the base section over the forward rim thereof.

A filing case including similar base and cover sections with guiding hinge connections for swinging and shifting the cover section upon the base section, a series of hinged holders mounted in the case and having its hinged end pivoted intermediate the end holders to the cover section, a frame having its rear end pivoted to the hinged end of the lower holder of the series, with means for supporting and guiding the free end of the frame upward and forward from within the base section over the forward rim thereof, and contracting swinging connections between the hinged end of the frame and the cover section ofthe case.

5. A filing case including similar base and cover sections with guiding hinge connections for swinging and shifting the cover section upon the base section, a series of hinged holders mounted in the case and hav ing its hinged end pivoted intermediate the end holders to the cover section, with means i in the base section for supporting and guiding the free ends of the holders upward and forward from within the base section over the forward rim thereof, and swinging c0I1- tracting connections between the hinged end of the lower holder of the series and the cover section of the case.

7. A filing case including similar base and cover sections with guiding hinge connections for swinging and shifting the cover section upon the base section, a series of hinged holders mounted in the case and having its hinged end pivoted intermediate the end holders to the cover section, with means in the base section for supporting and guiding the free ends of the holders upward and forward from within the base section over the forward rim thereof, and a swinging contracting support pivotally connected with the hinged end of the lower holder of the series and to the cover section of the case.

8. A filing case including similar base and cover sections with guiding hinge connections for swinging and shifting the cover section upon the base section, a plurality of hinged holders having the hinged end of the upper holder pivoted to the cover section, a frame having its rear end pivoted to the hinged end of the lower holder, with means for supporting and guiding the free end of the frame upward and forward from within the base section over the forward rim thereon, and contracting swinging connections between the pivoted end of the frame and the cover section of the case.

9. A filing case including similar base and cover sections with guiding hinge connections for swinging and shifting the cover section upon the base section, a series of hinged holders having the hinged end of the upper holder pivoted to the cover section, a frame having its rear end pivoted to the hinged end of the lower holder of the series, with means for supporting and guiding the free end of the frame upward and forward from within the base section over the forward rim thereon.

10. A filing case including similar base and cover sections with guiding hinge connections for swinging and shifting the cover section upon the base section, and a plurality of hinged holders having the hinged end of the upper holder pivoted to the cover section, with means for supporting and guiding the free ends of the holders upward and forward from within the base section over the forward rim thereon, and contracting swinging connections between the hinged end of the lower holder and the cover section of the case.

11. A filing case including similar base and cover sections with guiding hinge connections for swinging and shifting the cover section upon the base section, and a plurality of hinged holders having their hinged ends depending from a pivotal connection with the rear llIIl of the cover section with means for supporting and guiding the free ends of the holders upward and forward from within the base section over the forward riin thereon.

12. A filing case including similar base and cover sections with guiding hinge connections for swinging and shifting the cover section upon the base section, and a plurality of hinged holders having their hinged ends depending from a pivotal connection with the cover section, with means for support ing and guiding the free ends of the holders upward and forward from within the base section over the forward riin thereof, and means for elevating and sustaining the hinged ends of the holders.
