DOUGLAS i-r. seer-r Specification of Letters Patent.

RRIGATING-DITGE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DOUGLAS H. Bnnrrs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Phoenix, in the county of Maricopa and State of Arizona, have invented an improve ment in Irrigating-Ditches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in irrigation systems and has particular reference to a novel ditch lining construction.
An object of the invention is the provision of a sectional ditch lining having the sections thereof formed so that the structure may be readily and quickly assembled and rendered water-tight.
Another object is to provide a check gate of novel construction adapted to be placed in any desired position whereby the flow of water through the ditch may be cnecked and diverted through a suitable outlet pipe.
A further object is to provide a ditch lining which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture, and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a ditch constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, the numeral 5 indicates generally the bottom of the ditch lining and 6 the sides thereof which are preferably inclined as illustrated although it will be understood that said sides may be arranged perpendicular to the bottom. The bottom and sides of the lining are sectional and preferably formed from a plurality of concrete slabs or members 7 of rectangular formation, the abutting ends of each member being reduced upon opposite faces thereof as indicated by the numeral 8 whereby said ends will form an overlapping joint with the adjacent ends of abutting sections, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The longitudinal edges of each of the slabs or members 7 forming the bottom of the lining are preferably cut away as indicated at 9 to provide angular grooves for the reception of the bottom longitudinal edges of the members or slabs forming the sides of the lining, said bottom edges being beveled as indicated at 10 to form angular faces adapted to contact with the faces of the grooves 9. It will thus be seen that by formlng the bottom and side members of the lining in this manner the same may be readily and quickly placed in position by a person who need not be a skilled mechanic and also that when properly laid the same will be water-tight and thus prevent undue leakage.
Irrigation ditches are ordinarily provided with branch or outlet pipes arranged at in tervals and for this purpose the invention contemplates constructing certain of the side members 7 as shown in the accompanying drawing wherein one of the members is provided with an elongated cut out portion 11 which extends to a point adjacent the bottom edge of the side member and terminates at the top edge thereof. The member is also provided with oppositely disposed guide slots 12 arranged directly in the rear of the cut out portion 11 and adapted to receive a gate valve 13 slidable vertically in said guioe grooves 12 whereby to open and close the outlet opening 14 formed upon the inner surface of the member and registering with the lower end of said out out portion 11. This outlet opening 1% is adapted to receive one end of an outlet pipe 15: through which the water flows through the ditch to di'llerent sections to be irrigated.
It is desirable at times to check the flow of water through a portion of the irrigating ditch in order that the same may be diverted through one of the branch pipes and for this purpose the invention provides a check gate 16 preferably made of metal and of substantially triangular formation in cross section, as shown in Fig. 2. The base 17 of the gate may be provided with a depending flange 18 adapted to be inserted between the meeting ends of two of the bottom members of the lining whereby the gate is retained in position. The gate is further provided with the sides 19 adapted to engage the side members of the lining whereby the gate is further reinforced and prevented from dismounted between adjacent sections of said lining, and reinforcing sides for said gate engaging other sections of the lining.
