Be it known that I, HENRY I. VRIGLEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DraftPlates, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to draft plates for railway cars, and its object is to provide improved means for the attachment of a guide plate to the lower edge thereof. Such draft plates are usually made of cast metal, and are provided with one or more instanding abutments which constitute draft or bulfing shoulders. In some types of these devices l a horizontal guide plate is applied to the lower edge of the draft plate, and is secured by means of bolts. Upon this guide plate the draft gear is carried. It is customary to house the attaching bolts for securing the guide plate within the stop abutments', and the present invention provides means for the introduction, into such an abutment, of a securing bolt without weakening the plate by openings in its side walls.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention-Figure 1 is a side view of my improved draft plate, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on the line Q-Q of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4; is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing a slightly modified form of construction; and Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
The draft plate, generally designated by the numeral 10, may be of any desired form, and is here shown as adapted for use in connection with so called tandem draft gears, being provided with two pairs of draft and builing shoulders, as shown at 11,
12, and 13, 14, and with limiting abutments 15, 1G. These several stops and abutments are formed integral with the body of the plate, and project inwardly from its inner face. The central abutment 17, the front and rear walls of which constitute the draft and bufting shoulders 12, 13, is chambered.

guide plate. To permit the entrance of the bolt into the chamber of the abutment, the bottom of the latter is also provided with an enlarged opening 21, preferably located adjacent one of the rear corners of the abutment, this opening being of sutlicient size to freely admit the bolt head.
A transverse partition 22 crosses the chamber of the abutment 17, and is apertured, this aperture being of suthcient size to permit the bolt head to pass through it. Instanding guide ribs, as 23, 24, are formed above and below the partition Q2, and are inclined outwardly from its aperture 9o. These guide ribs may be as numerous as seems advisable, and there may also be provided below the partition additional vertical or horizontal ribs 26, 27, to facilitate the centering of the bolt.
The bolt is put in position by being inserted head foremost upwardly through the aperture Q1, and its head being projected through the aperture The small end of the bolt being now centered over the hole 19, the bolt is dropped therethrough, this hole being, of course, of such size as to prevent the passage of its head. The guide plate 18 now being put in place, is secured by means of a nut applied to the lower end of the bolt 20 and at its ends by such securing means as it may be desired to use.
The construction shown and described provides for the placing of the plate-ret-aining bolt without aperturing and thereby weakening the side walls of the abutment within which it is housed. The transverse partition and the guide ribs within the abutment serve not only for positioning the bolt above the bolt-hole, but substantially strengthen the abutment without adding material weight of metal.
lVhile the improvement is shown as applied only to a central abutment, it may be used in connection with any abutment on the plate which is of sutlicient size.
I claim as my invention 1. A draft plate comprising a body portion and a chambered abutment, such abutment having in its bottom a bolt hole and a separate entrance opening for the admission of a bolt.
2. A draft plate comprising a body portion and a chambered abutment, such abutment having a transverse partition apertured for the passage of a bolt head, the

4. A draft plate Comprising a body p01- tion and a chambered abutment, the abutment having in its bottom a bolt hole approximately on its vertical axis and an entrance opening, for a bolt disconnected from the bolt hole, and guide ribs for centering a bolt over the bolt hole.
