Be it known that I, MARsHALL N. Janvie, a citizen of the United States, residing yat, Portland, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Curtain-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said kdrawings constitute part of this application and represent, in-

My invention relates to an ,improvement in curtain fasteners particularly designed for use in automobile construction but available wherever like curtains are used, the
object being to produce a convenient, dur#l able and reliable fastening which will not under any conditions of jar or strain become unfastened.
With these endsl in view, my invention consists in a curtain fastener having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, as herein shown, I employ a solid post 5 formed at its outer end with an integral oblong lockinghead 6 the outer lface of which is rounded and which is separated from the body of the post by a concentric neck 7 beyond which the ends 8 of the head overhang. The inner end of the post is recessed as at 9 for the formation of an annular flange 10 adapting it to be fastened by spinning or swaging into a `circular hole 11 formed in -an oblong plate 12 formed near its ends with countersunk screw `holes 13 for the reception of screws 14 by means of which the plate 12,
rotatable locking-member 19 the outer end of which is diametrically'cut to forman oblong locking-opening 20 large enough for the free passage of the head 6 of the post with its overhanging ends 8. Preferably the material cut away for the formation of the opening 20, is turned outward to form two oppositely located linger-pieces 21 by which the locking-member 19 is rotated in locking and unlocking the` fastener. The outer ends of the fingers 21 are turned downward to engage with the outer face of a cuplike housing 22 having acentral opening 23 through whichy the locking-member 19 passes. The said housing 22 is enough larger in diameter than the locking-member 19 for the production'of an annular space 24C which receives the locking-ball 17 and a circular spring 25 between the lseparated ends of which the said ball is located, the said spring" exerting a constant effort to crowd the ball into the circular hole 18 in `the locking-member 19 so that the inner portion of theball may co-act with the grooves 15 and lrecesses 16of the'post 5. As the ball rides-'out of the said grooves and recesses, it moves radially with respect to the longitudinal axis of the post by forcing the ends of the circular spring 25 apart. The inner end ofthe housing 22 is entered into an annular groove 26 in an inner washer 27 placed against the inner face of the curtain 28 which is pinched between it and an outer washer 29 placed upon the outer face of the curtain and formed at opposite points upon its edge with fingers 30 notches 3l .in the edge of the inner washer 27 the said. lingers 30 being bent inward at a right angle to the washer 29 and then forced through the curtain 28 and through the notches 31 and then bent inward as at 32 for firmly holding the two washers upon the opposite sides of the curtain with the same pinched between them. The said outer washer 29 is formed with a central opening 33 large enough to permit it to be set over the housing 22 which is passed outward through an opening 34 in the curtain 28 when the device is being assembled.
In so far as the inner and outer washers 27 and 29 are applied directly to the curtain, they correspond to'and take the place` of the gromet of an ordinary curtain-fastener, and for convenience I shall hereafter refer to them as together forming the gromet of my improved device. My device is therefore characterized by having its gromet provided with a rotatable lockingemember adapted to be engaged with, and disengaged from, al rigid post fastened to some portion of the car.
The operation of my improved fastener is as follows: rIhe locking-member 19 is turned one way or the other as required to register its oblong opening 20 with the fixed head 6 of the post 5 which is mounted upon the carbody, represented by 35. The gromet is then slipped over the post 5, at which time the ball 17 enters one or the otherl of the clearance-grooves 15 thereof, these grooves Vbeing arranged so that they will be in line with the said ball 17 at ythe same time that the slot 20 is registered with the oblong head 6 of the post 5. Vhen the gromet is in position over the post 5, as described, the opening 20 in the locking-member 19 will coincide with the neck 7 of the post, thus permitting the locking-member 19 to be rotated in either direction for a quarter turn, whereby the ball 17 will be forced, against the tension of the spring 25, to ride out of the groove 15 in which it happens to be located, and over the face of the post, until it enters one or the other of the two recesses 16 into which it is forced by the spring25 with the effect of holding the locking-member against rotation. The quarter turn rotation 0f the member 19 having now placed the opening 20-at a right angle to the oblong head 6, as shown in Fig. 1, the device is securely fastened, since the gromet organization cannot now be removed'from the post except by the manual rotation of the locking-member 19 for a quarter turn in one direction or the other for re-registering the locking-ball 17 with one or the other of the two grooves 15, whereby the opening 20 is lagain registered with the oblong head 6 so as to permit the gromet to be slipped off from the same.
Under my improved construction, the post is made in one piece and Vnot liable to suffer i post might be omitted, though the device is more conveniently operated with them, but no more securely locked.
I claim:
1. In a curtain fastener, the combination with a post having an oblong overhanging locking-head, of a gromet adapted to be applied to a curtain, and a rotary lockingmember having swivel connection with the said gromet and adapted on partial rotation to co-act with the overhanging locking-head Aof the post to connect the same and the gromet.
' 2. In a curtain fastener, the combination with a post having an oblong overhanging locking-head and formed with locking-recesses, of a gromet adapted to be applied vto a curtain, a rotary locking-member having swivel connection with the said gromet, and a locking-ball carried by the said member and brought into'position by the partial rotation thereof for co-acting with a lockingrecess of the post.
3. In a curtain fastener` the combination with a post having an oblong overhanging locking-head, and formed with longitudinal clearance-grooves and with looking-recesses, of a gromet adapted to be applied to a curtain, a rotary locking-member having swivel connection with the said gromet, and a locking-ball carried by the said member and coacting with the said grooves and lockingrecesses of the post.
4. In a curtain fastener, the combination with a post having an overhanging head, of a gromet, a rotary locking-member carried thereby, a locking-ball carried by the said member and coacting with the said post, a housing inclosing the said rotary lockingmember, and a spring located within the said housing and coacting with the said ball. 5. In a curtain fastener, the combination with a post having an overhanging head and formed with a clearance groove and a locking recess, of a gromet provided with a rotary locking-member, a lockingeball located in an opening formed in the said lockingin an opening in the said housing and coacting With the said post, and a spring located between the housing and the lockingmernber for coaction With the said ball Which it holds in engagement with the said post.
