To all whom it may concern...

Be it known that I, CLIFFORD LANDON Moons, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chalk- Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in chalk holders, of the character used for holding blocks of chalk for billiard cues and the like, wherein a holder is provided for receiving the chalk, and having means for securing the chalk in place in the holder, and having means for permitting the holder to be secured to a billiard or pool table in such manner that while one face of the chalk will be exposed to permit the chalking of the cue, the holder and the chalk will be held in aposition such that it will not interfere with the use of the table.

The present embodiment of the lnventlon 1s shown 111 connection with a billiard table,

the holder being secured beneath one of the side or end rails of the table, in such position that while one face of the chalk is exposed in easily accessible position to the tip of the cue, the holder does not interfere with the use of the table.

The holder comprises a base plate 1, having at each end an opening 2, for receiving a screw 3 or the like, to secure the base plate and holder to the rail. On its lower face, the plate is provided with a substantially rectangular extension 4, forming a pocket for receiving the block 5 of chalk.

This holder is slightly larger than the block of chalk, and of a depth corresponding approximately to that of the depth of the block of chalk, so that when the chalk is in the holder, one face of the chalk, namely that face provided with the depression 6 for engagement by the one tip, will be projected beyond the free edge of the holder, in position to be engaged by the tip of the cue.

site side of the holder, to securely clamp it in the holder.

\Vhen the block of chalk is worn away below the surface of the free edge of the holder, the chalk may be moved outwardly by loosening the set screw, thus permitting every portion of the block to be used.

The improved holder is arranged so that the plane of the free edge of the holder and the base plate will be just flush with the outer face of the rail, and since the holder inclines outwardly with respect to the base plate, the exposed face of the block will be held inclined outwardly and upwardly, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2, in the most accessible position.

The improved holder is one solid piece of metal, and it is unbreakable. The chalk is always in plain sight, so that it may be easily seen by the players, since it is practically im possible to look at the table without also seeing the chalk.

In practice, billiard tables will be provid ed with four of the holders, while pool tables will be provided with six of the hold ers. With this arrangement it is impossible to get into a position with respect to the table such that at least one block of chalk is not accessible.

The improved holder maybe stamped, cast or otherwise manufactured, and preferably the holder is of brass, and it may be suitably ornamented if desired.

\Vhen a block of chalk has been exhausted it is released by turning the set screw 7 and a new block is inserted.

The clamping mechanism not only holds the chalk in place, but also prevents its re moval by unauthorized parties.

From the foregoing it is manifest that the screw 7 may be utilized in securing the chalk block in the socket in any desired adjustment, so that regardless of the condition of wear of the chalk block it may at all times be held in the socket with its outer face approximately flush with the open mouth of the socket and in convenient position for use.

It will also be noticed that by the special construction of the base plate 1 I provide for securing the holder to the under side of a table flange with the socket in its extreme highest position, that is, to say avoiding as far as possible any considerable drop of the socket below the flange of the table top. By this means I am able to so arrange the socket that it forms practically a prolongation of the outer upper edge of the table top, which latter may be utilized thus as a guide in directing the cues to the chalk block.

I claim:

A chalk holder, substantially as herein described, comprising a base plate and a socket secured to the under side thereof and at an angle to the base plate inclining upwardly toward its outer end, the base plate projecting at both ends of the socket and alfording ears, whereby the holder may be secured to the under side of a table flange and the socket may be arranged in close proximity to the under side of said flange, and a screw threaded through the side Wall of the socket and adapted to secure a chalk block in said socket in any desired adjustment, whereby a chalk block may be secured in the socket with its outer face approximately flush with the open mouth of the socket regardless of the size or extent of wear of the chalk block, the inclination of the socket securing the chalk block in convenient position for use, substantially as set forth.
