NAIL LEATHER HEADING PRESS. APPLICATION FILED MAY 25. I915.

ANT eerie.
' FRANK E. KEIFFER, OIE MANHEIM, PENNSYLVANIA.
NAIL-LEATHER-I'IEADING PRESS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK E. KEIFFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manheim, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nail-Leather- Heading Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to nail leather heading presses, the object in view being to produce a simple cheap and effective press or machine embodying in connection with a suitable work supporting base, a lever pivotally connected with the base and formed in such manner as to provide means for pressing a nail or the equivalent thereof through a leather washer, the machine or press being adapted to rapidly assemble nails or the like and washers of leather or similar material, the complete product being generally used by the electric trade to fasten porcelain knobs and cleats and the like to wood work, the leather heads or washers operating to protect the porcelain in driving the nails or any form of fastening device With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the press of this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the base thereof. Fig. 3 is a reverse plan view of the lever.
The press contemplated in this invention comprises essentially a base 1 having an upstanding reinforcing flange 2, the base being so shaped as to provide extensions 3 and 4 of sufficient size to provide for the formation therein of holes 6 to receive screws, bolts or other fasteners. The forward portion 4 of the base is provided with an open ended slot 7 and is also formed in the upper face thereof with a depression 8 designed to re ceive a washer of leather or the like, the said recess 8 being intersected by the slot 7 in order to permit the ready ejection of the headed nail or fastener after the press has completed its operation.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1916.
Application filed May 25, 1915. Serial No. 30.377.
The lever designated at 9 is pivotally connected at 10 to the rear end of the base 1.
' This lever, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, is T-shaped in cross section and said lever is held normally raised as shown in Fig. 1 by means of a spring 11 the central portion of which is coiled to embrace the pivot of the lever while the arms 12 and 13 thereof are extended in a forward direction, the arm 12 being bent to enter a hole or socket 14 in the lever and the arm 13 leing bent to enter a hole or socket 15 in the ase.
At the proper point between the ends of the lever 9, the latter is formed with a substantially hemispherical nail head receiving socket 16 which when the lever is depressed lies directly over the washer receiving recess in the base. Thus by depressing the free end of the lever which is expanded as shown at 17 to provide a broad hand bearing surface, the nail or other pointed device or fastener is driven through the washer of leather or like material. Upon releasing the lever, the latter is thrown upward by the action of the spring 'above described and the leather headed nail may then be easily ejected from its position, this being permitted by the open slot referred to.
What I claim is A nail leather heading press embodying a fixed base formed with a recess in the upper face thereof to contain and position a washer and also provided with a slot inter secting said recess, and a presser lever pivotally connected to said base at a point remote from said recess and provided with a nail head centering recess which when the lever is depressed lies directly over the recess in the base, said lever projecting at its free end beyond the base.
In testimony whereof I afTiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK E. KEIFFER.
Witnesses:
ANNIE WITMEYER, II. E. TROUT.
