Application ledApril '$2 1916. Serial No. 89,555.
To all whom z'z may concern:
'Be it known that l, JOSEPH d. Tnrrz, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State ofNebraska, have invented a. certain new and useful improvement in Snow- Skates, or which the following isa specifica` tion.
'My present invention relates generally to skates, and more particularly to skates adapted for use on snow, my object being to provide certain simple, inexpensive 1mprovements in connection with the ordinary skates to adapt the same to such a use, and particularly to such improvements as are capable of manufacture and sale either as a permanent integral part of the skate, or in the nature of an attachment for the ordinary skate, including the usual ice blade, in order to adapt the same to the present purpose in addition to its normal use.
ln the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a skate provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross sec# tion taken therethrough substantially' on line 2-2 of Fig. 1,' and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the runner removed.
Referring now to these figures, l have shown my improvements in connection with the usual skate generally indicated' at 10, and.
including the toe and heel clamps 11 and 12 together with their adjusting and actuating parts shown at 13 and the blade 14. ln'aecordance with my invention the skate so constructed is provided with a runner indicated at 15 and circular in crosssection throughout in order to adapt the same to skating upon hard or crusty snonT through which the usual edged blade would cut, the runner so shaped, being tubular in form with an upwardly bent and inturned forward end 16, the latter o1 which is provided-With a clamp engaging a portion of the skate to maintain the runner in position as seen in Fig. 1. The tubular runner 15 is also providedlwith a longitudinal slot 17, as most plainly seen in Figs. 2 and 3, receiving the lower edge portion of the blade 14 of the skate, and the upturned end 16 thereof is bifurcated at its extremity as seen at 18 in order to straddle the upper forward portion l of the blade, the spaced extensions at the extremity of the portion 16 formed by such bifurcation, beingprovided with transversely alined openings, one of which is preferably threaded for the reception of the threaded end portion of a clamping bolt 19 having a wingedihead 20 for its convenient manipulation to draw the extensions toward one another into clamping engagement with the upper forward portionof the blade 14 and thus effectively maintain the tubular runner in position upon the lower portion of the blade 14 as shown in Fig. 1. lt is obvious, however, that the runner 15 may be formed solid and circular in cross section and permanently secured to the lower portion of the blade 14, to form an integral part of the skate solely for use upon the snow, although more conveniently of the form described as an attachment for the ordinary skate whereby to adapt the same to lthe additional purpose.
1. ln combination with a skate includin a bla-de, a tubular runner having a longitudinalV slot to receive Vthe lower longitudinal edge portion of the blade therein, having its forward end bent upwardly and inwardly and having its extremitybifurcated to pr0- vide extensions embracing the upper forward portion of the blade, said extensions being provided with transversely alined openings, and a clamping bolt extending through the openings whereby to clampingly engage the upper forward portion of the blade and maintain the runner in position.
v2. lin combination with a skate including a blade, a tubular runner having a longitudinal slot to receive the lower longitudinal edge portion of the blade therein, having its forward end bent upwardly and inwardly vand having its extremity bifurcated to provide extensions embracing the upper for-v ward portion of the blade, said extensions being provided with transversely alined openings, and a Vclamping bolt extending through the openings whereby to clampingly engage the upper forward portion of the blade and maintain the runner in position, said bolt havin threaded engagement with one of the sai extensions at its said opening.
3. In combination with a skatexincluding a blade, a tubular runner longitudinally :(11 bladel, a tubular runlrlierblllafingfallonglitulslotted to receive the blade of the skate.
