Be it known that I, CHARLES M. A. Cos- TELLO, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Curtain-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-

- This invention relates to an improvement in curtain fasteners particularly adapted for curtains for vehicles.

In the more general construction of fasteners for vehicle curtains, a post is employed which is secured to the vehicle, and in this post a turn-button is swiveled and the curtain is provided with a gromet adapted to set over the button and post after which the button is turned to lock the curtain in place. Buttons of this type necessarily project for a considerable distance beyond the vehicle and are liable to catch in the garments of users. Furthermore, with the usual type of curtain fastener it is necessary for the operator to remove his gloves (if he has them on) when adjusting a curtain.

The object of this invention is to provide a curtain fastener which may be readily applied'and which does not require the use of any device which will project beyond the surface of the vehicle; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.

preferably formed integral with a disk 6 having a flange 7 In the end of the post is a slot 8 for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. This disk is inserted into a cupshaped back 9 which is formed with a plurality of short prongs 10 which are adapted to turn overthe edge of the disk 6 and so as to form a chamber 11 between them for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. The back is also formed with a series of fingers 12. Within the chamber 11 are two plates central portion 21 of which is preferably set inward so as to assist in holdingthe plates in place and provide a space for the thumb. The plates are also provided with shanks 22 and 23 turned at right angles to the plate and projecting through the post 5 and formed at their outer ends with hooks 24 and 25 which project outward through the slot 8 and so that the ends 26 and 27 of the hooks project beyond the side walls of the post. The device is secured to the curtain 28 by forming the curtain with a hole through which the post 5 extends and then the fingers 12 are turned down over the edge of a washer 29 placed over the post and against the inner face of the curtain. If the body of the car to which the curtain is to be attached is of metal, as indicated by 30 in Fig. 4, a hole 31 will be cut in the car at the desired point corresponding in diameter substantially to the external diameter of the post 5 so that the post 5 can be passed through the opening, and as the post is forced into the opening the hooks 24 and 25 will be forced together, allowing the post to enter the hole formed for it. When it has been entered into the hole, the hooks spring outward and the ends 26 and 27 engage with the inner wall of the vehicle body. The fastening device is readily inserted into the hole formed for it by pressing upon the back 9, the thumb or finger entering the recess 21 provided for that purpose. I

If desired, the hole 31 in the metal frame 30 may be reinforced by an eyelet 32, as shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings, or injcase the device is used on a Wooden body or at points where a hole cannot be made for the post, a socket piece 33, as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings may be attached at the point where the curtain is to be engaged, this socket-piece being adapted to be secured by screws or otherwise, and formed with a hole 34 corresponding to the hole 31 previously referred to, and through which the post 5 may extend so thatthe hooks 24 and 25 engage with the inner wall of the socket. It will thus be seen that withvices are applied to the curtain as readily as are the gromets now commonly employed, and in metal bodies the hole for the fastening device can be made more readily than can the ordinary curtain fastener be applied,

I claim I 1. A curtain fastener comprising a hollow post, a back in which the post is mounted,

disk at the inner endof said post,a cupshaped back inclosing said disk, plates located between the disk and back, said plates formed with outwardly projecting hooks which extend through the slot in the outer end of the post, means for normally separating said plates, and means for moving said plates to retract the said hooks.

3. A curtain fastener comprising a hollow post pointed at its outer end and the outer end formed with a transverse slot, a flanged disk around the inner end of the post, a cupshaped back inclosing said disk, said back formed with prongs adapted to be folded over the face of said disk, said back also formed with fingers, plates located between the back and disk, the adjacent faces of the plates notched and each formed with a-hook projecting outward through the slot in the end of the post, said plates each provided with a finger-piece, a spring the ends of which engage with said plates and normally tending to separate said hooks, said'fingerpieces projecting outward through said back, combined with a curtain through which the post extends, the said fingers being adapted to be turned down oversaid curtain, whereby the fastening device is secured thereto.
