To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN B. ALEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Games, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to amusement devices and more particularly to that class so frequently seen in open air parks, circuses and the like commonly styled throwing the base ball.

The object of my invention is to provide a popular form of amusement which will replace the games at present in vogue in which live nigger targets are employed.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be in part described and in part apparent as the description is proceeded with.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention; Fig. 2 is a rear view; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 11 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view, and; Fig. 5 is a section on the line 22 Fig. 2.

Referring more particularly to the drawings in which like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views the numeral 1 represents an easel-like structure comprising a pair of spaced fiat boards 2 and 3 secured to and supported by two pairs of uprights 4E and 5 respectively, secured to the side edges of said boards by any suitable fastenings such as 6, the whole being maintained in a substantially upright position by a plurality of braces 7 The innermost uprights 4t and 5 are connected together by a plurality of horizontally disposed spaced doll supporting bars 7 prefreably angular in cross section there being five of such bars employed in the preferred embodiment of the invention. Mounted upon each one of the bars 7 in a forwardly inclined position is a plurality of dolls or the like 9, the number of dolls to a row being regulated to conform to or comfortably fill the space between the upwardly diverging innermost uprights 4 and 5. Hinges 10 connect the lower rear faces of the dolls to the rear faces of the cross bars for an obvious purpose.

bars 12- and cross bars 13 is reciprocably mounted upon the rear of the doll supportmg cross bars 7 in parallel relation to the supporting cross bars and boards 2 and 3, by means of pins 14: carried by the cross bars adapted to enter longitudinal slots 15 formed in the side bars 12. When the frame 11 is in its normal or lowermost position with the upper wall or extremity of the slots resting on the pins 14, the bars 13 are directly behind the bars 7 and consequently out of engagement with the dolls. It will thus be seen that the dolls are free to be topped over against the bars 13 when struck by a ball thrown from the front of the tent or inclosure 16.

Any suitable means is provided for manually elevating the frame 11, and consequently those of the dolls which may have been knocked down. In practice I employ a cable 17 secured at one end to one of the cross bars 7 as at 18 thence passing under a pulley 19 carried by the lowermost cross bar 13 of the reciprocable frame and upwardly over

20 and 21 depending from the roof 22 of the tent 16. The free end of the cable which may be carried to any point most convenient to the operator may be provided with a weight 23 for the purpose of facilitating the raising of very heavy frames.

The board 2 has painted thereon the representation of a negro 24: having a large cut out portion or mouth 25. Suspended within the open mouth 25 of the figure is a bell 27. Painted on the front face of the board 3 are two negro figures 28 and 29 male and female respectively represented in the act of kissing. The head 30 of the male figure 28 is cut away as indicated by the heavy line 31 (Fig. 1) and secured to the back of the board 3 by means of a hinge 26. I

32 and 33 designate reinforcing strips respectively designed to reinforce those portions of the body portion of the figure 28 and head 30 thereof most likely to be damaged by pitched balls.

It is thought that the operation of the invention will be obvious from the foregoing but may be briefly described as follows: The patron having paid for a predetermined number of balls proceeds to knock down the dolls 9, ring the bell 25 or break the kiss by upsetting the head 30, for each of which exhibitions of skill he receives a certain prize. The dolls 9 and head are then returned to normal position by the structed Without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matters contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:

1. In a device of the character described an easel-like structure comprising a pair of substantially upright flat boards connected together by cross bars, said bars having dolls or the like pivotally connected thereto, one of said boards having painted thereon the representation of a male and female figure in the act of kissing, the head portion of one of said figures being cut away and hinged to the body portion thereof, said dolls and said pivoted head being adapted to be tilted rearWardly upon being struck by a ball, means for simultaneously returning said dolls and said pivotal head to their normal upright position and means for supporting said boards in substantially upright position.

2. In a device of the character described a board or the like containing the representation of a male and female figure normally in the act of kissing, the head of one of said figures being pivotally connected to the body portion of said figure, said head being adapted to be tilted rearwardly on its pivot upon being struck by a ball, and means for returning said head to its normal position.

8. An amusement device comprising a substantially upright board normally representing a male and female figure in the act of kissing, the head of one of said figures being pivoted and adapted to be tilted rearwardly upon being struck by a ball and manually operable means for returning said head to normalposition. v

4. An amusement device comprising a substantially upright board bearing a male and female figure, the heads of said figures being normally in horizontal alinement, one of said figures having a pivoted head adapted to be tilted on its pivot out of alinement with the head of the other of said figures and means for returning said head to normal position.
