Description

L. R. ALEXANDRE.
Patented Aug. 8, 1916.
nnrrnn LILLIAN R. ALEXANDER OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGAR-BAND.
Application filed October 23, 1914.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LILLIAN R. Amnxav- DRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Bands, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specili cation.
My invention relates to improvements in bands adapted to be applied to cigars, and the same has for its object to provide a simple, efiicient and inexpensive band which may be readily attached to a cigar and removed therefrom without danger of injuring the cigar or its wrapper.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a band which may be readily applied to a cigar, having means arranged thereon for removing the same from the cigar, which means also serves to destroy said band and prevent the re-use of the same.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a top or plan view of a cigar with one form of band constructed according to, and embodying my said invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective View showing a band having ends secured together as the same will appear when attached to a cigar; Fig. 3 is a rear view of the band with its ends extended to show the severing member, and the protecting means therefor; Fig. 4 is a top edge view thereof; Fig. 5 is a rear or back view illustrating a modified construction and showing the ends of the band extended; Fig. 6 is a rear view showing a modified form of band, and Fig. 7 is a front view, in perspective, of the construction shown at Fig. 6.
In said drawings 10 designates the band comprising an elliptical center portion or medallion 11. The said center portion, however may be of any shape or form desired, and 12, 12 denote end members extending from the opposite side of said elliptical center portion, The extremities of the end Specification of Letters ?atent.
Patented Au 8, 16 116.
Serial No. 868,202.
portions 12, 12 are adapted to be secured together by paste or other means in order to maintain the band attached to a cigar. From one edge of the center elliptical portion 11 extends a projecting member 13 which is formed integrally with said band, and is provided at its free end with a foldable seal-shaped section 14: which is adapted to register with a corresponding seal-shaped portion 15 also formed as a part of the free end of the projecting section 13. The rear side of portions 1 1, 15 are prefe'ably provided with an adhesive agent to permit of their being secured together to form a finger portion.
16 denotes a severing member which is preferably made of a thin silk or cotton thread or other suitable material and extends transversely across the rear of the band from the upper edge of the elliptical center portion 11 to the lower end of the projecting portion 13, and the connected finger portions 14, 15 thereon. The flexible member 16 is preferably secured to the rear of the band and its projecting section 13 by pasting, and in order to prevent the rear side of said band and the projecting section 13 thereon adhering to a cigar, the said band 12 and its projecting portion 13 are provided upon their rear side with a protecting member which may be coextensive in outline with said band, as shown at 17 Fig. 5, or which may be formed of a narrow strip 17 ofthin wax paper or other suitable material impervious to moisture, as shown at Fig. 3.
In order to provide a proper finger portion to permit of the easy grasping of the projecting end of the severing member 16 the seal- shaped members 14, 15 at the free end of the projecting section 13 are adapted to be secured together and to embrace the end of the flexible severing member secured to 'the underside of the projecting section 13.
In order to remove the band from a cigar it merely becomes necessary to grasp the seal-shaped finger portions 1%, 15 between the thumb and forefinger and thence raise the same upwardly by which operation the flexible severing member 16 will be caused to split the band transversely through the center of the medallion or intermediate portion 11, and thereby release the band of its engagement with the cigar and at the same time so destroy the band as to render the same unfit for further use.
At Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a modified construction in which the center portion or medallion 11 is provided at its upper and lower edges with \l-shaped recesses or in dentations 11", 11 From the opposite vertical sides of the center portion 11 extend end portions 12, 12 16 denotes the flexible severing member which is secured intermediate of its ends to the rear of the elliptical portion 11 of the band, and has its projecting portions located within the recesses 11 11 and its extremities brought together and embraced by a foldable seal comprising two sections 14, 14 secured together by a suitable adhesive agent. In order to prevent the pasted rear surface of the band and the flexible severing member 16 adhering to the cigar the rear side of the band is provided with a protective covering 17 preferably formed of wax paper or other material suitably rendered impervious to moisture. The protective covering may correspond in outline with the outline of the band as shown at Fig. 5, and may be secured thereto by a suitable adhesive agent, or the same may be formed of a narrow strip 17 as shown at Figs. 6 and 7. In this modified construction it merely becomes necessary to grasp the seal-shaped finger portions 14*, 15" between the thumb and the forefinger, and then raise the same whereby the portions of said flexible member 16 located within the recesses 11 ,'11 will be caused to approach each other and thereby split the hand through the center of the elliptical portion 11. 1
It is to be noted that in both the main and in the modified constructions the protecting sections are made of very thin material so that when the flexible severing member is manipulated it will serve not only to tear or split the band itself but also the portions of the protecting strip directly below the securing portion of said flexible severing member.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is 1. A device of the character described comprising a band, a severing member secured to the inner surface of said band intermediate the ends thereof, and a protecting section secured to the inner surface of said band and inclosing said severing member, substantially as specified.
2. A device of the character described comprising a band, a flexible severing member secured to the inner surface of said band intermediate the ends thereof, means secured to said severing member for manipulating the same to sever the band, and a protecting section secured to the inner surface of said band and inclosing said severing member, substantially as specified.
3. A device of the character described comprising a band, an integral projecting portion extending transversely therefrom, a flexible severing member secured to the inner surface of said cigar band and to the inner surface of the member projecting therefrom, and a finger portion at the free end of said projecting portion embracing one end of said severing member, substantially as specified.
4. A device of the character described comprising a band, an integral portion extending laterally from one edge of said band intermediate the ends thereof, a flexible severing member extending transversely of said band and secured to the inner surface thereof and to the inner surface of said projecting member, and a finger portion secured to the free end of said projecting member and embracing the end of said severing member, substantially as specified.
5. A device of the character described comprising a band, an integral member projecting transversely from one edge of said band intermediate the ends thereof, a flexible severing member secured transversely of said band to the inner surface thereof and to the inner surface of the projecting member, a protecting section secured to the inner surface of said band and of said projecting member and inclosing said severing member, substantially as specified.
6. A device of the character described comprising a band, an integral member projecting transversely from one edge of said band intermediate the ends thereof, a flexible severing member secured transversely of said band to the inner surface thereof and to the inner surface of the projecting member extending therefrom, a protecting section secured to the inner surface of said band and of said projecting member and inclosing said severing member, and a finger portion secured to the free end of said project-ing member and embracing the end of said severing member, substantially as specified.
Signed at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, this 4th day of September, one thousand nine hundred and fourteen.
LILLIAN R. ALEXANDRE.
