DELANY, of the city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Flushing Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
ll'ly invention relates to that class of flushing devices in which a plunger movable through a cylinder by water pressure actuates an admission valve. I provide improved mcans for actuating the mechanism by gravity so as to overcome the balances of pressure.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a vertical sectional view embodying my invention. Fig.2 is a similar view on line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3-3, Fig. 1, and Fig. 1 is a section on line 4--'1, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing 1 designates a cylinder closed at its lower end as at 2. W'ater at city pressure from a supply pipe 3 may he conducted to this cylinder through a port 1 controlled by a push button valve 5 normally held to its seat by a spring 6 on its stem 6 and operated as at 7, the inward movement of the head 7 causing the valve 5 to be unseated against the tension of the spring.
Within the cylinder 1 I have shown a vertically movable plunger 8. This is suitably weighted and carries a tubular stem 9 extending entirely through its body portion and downward through the bottom 2 of the cylinder when the plunger is at its lowered position as in Fig. 1. At its lower end the tube 9 is shown fulcrumed to a sleeve 10 movable on a rod 12 adapted to operate the valve 17 when the plunger 8 rises.
By reference to Figs. 1 and 4 it will be seen that the rod 12 is received by an aperture .15 in the stem 16 of the valve proper 17. I have shown the stem 16 threaded in a sleeve 18, the latter having flanges 19 at its ends to receive a yoke 20 whose lateral portions 21 are rigidly secured to an annular rim 22 in the casing 14. A pair of oppositely disposed lugs 23 extend inward from the lateral portions 21 of the yoke and constitute bearing surfaces for the valve stem 16. 24 is the valve seat which in the Specification of Letters Patent.

present instance is shown as an integral portlon of the yoke. This valve has a quick thread connection between the stem 16 and the sleeve 18 so that a relatively slight extent of movement upward of the rod 12 and consequent axial turn of the stem 16 will substantially unseat the valve 17.
The water inlet 3 is always in communication with the casing 14 in which the valve mechanism 14 is contained. This communication is established by the passage way 25 whose only communication with the outlet 261s through the valve.
At 27 I have shown an adjusting screw which regulates the outlet of water from cylinder 1 in the descent of the plunger during the closing movement of the valve 17. This screw is located across the port 28 shown formed in the wall 2 of'cylinder l to establish communication between cylinder 1 and the lower chamber or outlet portion of the casing 1.
Appropriate means for securing the block 10 to the stem 9 is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 where the block is provided with a bracket 29 which is received within a slot formed in the lower end of stem 9 and held by a pin 30, the stem having a transverse slot to allow of the movement of the bracket.
In operation the push button 7 is manipulated to admit water from the city main through port 41 into cylinder 1. This causes the plunger 8 to rise, the air above the plunger passing downward. through the tubular stem 9. This elevates the rod 12, the block or sleeve 10 sliding on the rod to compensate the circular movement of the latter with the vertical movement of the stem 9. This movement of the rod 12 turns the stem 16 and quickly unseats the valve 17 which latter is of less area than the plunger 8. As the plunger lowers the rod 12 is swung downward and valve 17 seated.
lVhen the mechanism is connected up for use and water passes the valve 17 it will back up in the lower part 1 of the valve casing notwithstanding its rapid passage through outlet 26 which is of the same area as valve 17 This is largely due to friction which throttles and retards the flow in the piping to which outlet 26 delivers. Consequently when the piston 8 is in the position shown in Fig. 2 the pressures above and beneath port 28 are balanced. This balance is overcome by the weight of the piston. The adjustment at 27 enables me to meet variations of pressure. It is obvious that the pressure tends to close valve 17 as its force is exerted in the direction of the closing movement of the valve. Therefore When the pressure is relatively high the port 28 is restricted and is enlarged when relatively low pressure prevails.
In addition to the weight of the piston overcoming the balance, the lowering movement of the piston allows the Water in casing 1'" to pass upward through stem 9 so that its Weight above the piston aids the weight of the latter to close the valve.
I claim as my invention 1. In a flushing device the combination with a cylinder and piston, a casing subjacent said cylinder, a tubular rod opening into the cylinder above said piston and depending from said piston into said casing, and means for admit-ting water to said cylinder beneath said piston, of a main supply pipe and a valve therein, a rod secured to said valve and having a sleeve movable thereon and secured to said tubular stem.
In flushing device the combination with a cylinder and piston, a subjacent outlet casing, a tubular rod depending from said piston and opening into the cylinder above the piston and into said casing, means for admitting water to said cylinder, means for exhausting water from said cylinder to said casing, and means for controlling said latter means, of a main supply pipe-and a valve therein, and a rod secured to said valve and to said tubular stem.
3. In a flushing device the combination with the cylinder and piston and the tubu lar rod depending from said piston, and means for admitting water to said cylinder, of a main supply pipe and valve therein, said valve comprising a threaded stem, a rod secured to said stem, and a sleeve movable on said rod and pivotally secured to said tubular stem.

In a flushing device the combination with the cylinder and piston, and means for admitting water to said cylinder, of a main supply pipe, a valve therein comprising a threaded stem, a yoke, a threaded sleeve supported by said yoke and engaging the threads of said stem, and a valve carriedby said stem, a rod secured to said stein, a sleeve movable on said rod, and a tubular stein pivotally secured to said block and movable with said piston.
