FURNACE.
7 To all whom it may concern venteda new and useful Furnace, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a furnace, adapted primarily but not exclusively for outdoor use.
The invention aims to provide a structure of this type which may be adjusted readily, to change its diameter, thereby adapting the furnace for pots, tanks and other vessels of diiferent diameters.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the stack of the furnace may be used as a means for holding the fu'rnace temporarily at an adjusted diameter, while the securing means of the furnace'are being inserted.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
lln the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 shows in-front elevation, a furnace constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 shows the furnace in sideelevation; Fig. 3 is a trarisverse section of the furnace; and Fig. 4 is a fragmental perspective showing one end of the stack.
The furnace forming the subject matter of this application includes a drum 1 preferably made out of a sheet of resilient metal bent into circular form and embodying overlapped ends 2 and 3. The end 2 is provided adjacent its top and bottom with a plurality of openings 4. One or more openings 5 are formed in the end 3 adjacent the upper and lower edges of said end. Securing devices 6 are mounted in the openings 5 of the end 3, and may be mounted selectively in any of the openings 4 in the end 2 in order to vary the diameter of the drum 1.. The securing devices 6 may be bolts.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 17, 1916. Serial No. 98,104.
Patented Aug. 1, 1916.
The numeral 7 denotes a stack provided with a rectangular extension 8. In the rear of the drum 1 is fashioned an opening 9 in which the stack 7 is journaled. The stack 7 1s provided with ears 10 which bear agalnst the outer surface of the drum 1, and
. is provided with ears 11 bearing against the,
inner surface of the drum, the construction belng such that the stack 7 is held for rotation on the drum. Fixed to and upstanding from the stack? is a finger 12. Mounted on the end 3 of the drum is a finger 14;. The fingers 12 and 14 are united by a detachable connection piece of wire.
When the drum 1 is of considerable diameter, some .difliculty is experienced in adjusting the drum, and inholding the drum in adjusted position while the bolts 6 are being inserted. The extension 8 constitutes a lever whereby the stack 7 may be rotated on the drum 1, and when the stack thus is rotated, a pull is exerted on the connection 15. In this manner, the ends 2 and 3 of the drum may be made to slip past each other for the purpose of bringing one of the openings in the end 3 into alinement with one of the openings 4 in the end 2, or for the purpose of. holding such openings in alinement. After the openings are held alined by the connection 15, the bolts 6 may be.
inserted. The stack 7 and its extension 8 ex ercise a double function, since these elements serve at once to convey away the products of combustion,-- and serve, as well, as a lever whereby the diameter of the drum 1 may be adjusted, and whereby the drum 1 may be held at adjusted diameters.
At its front, the drum 1 is supplied with adoorway 17. Secured to the drum 1 along the sides of the doorway are guides 18 in which is mounted to reciprocate, vertically, a door 19 having a finger piece 20, the construction being such that the door may be raised readily to permit stoking. On the drum 1 may be placed a pot, tank or other utensil, indicated by the reference character 21.
lin Fig. 3 of the drawings, the arrow A indicates the direction in which the exten- 15, which may be a sion 8 of the stack 7 is turned, to secure a rotation of the stack. It is obvious that when the stack is rotated in the manner hereinbetion between the rotatable stack and that end of the drum which is remote from the portion of the drum wherein the stack is journaled.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
