Be it known that I, ELMER E: MOHNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fresno, in the county of Fresno and State of California, h-ave invented new and useitul Improvements in Saw-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in saw filing gages.
An object of the invent-ion is to provide a gage which may be used in shaving as well as iling the raker teeth of a saw and in which a movable member may be adjusted at different heights to suit the character of the teeth to which it is applied.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with a sliding member in the nature of a gage whereby the proper height of the raker teeth may be determined without necessitating the operator using his eyes for such purpose.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the, improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specication and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the frame which may be in the nature of a flatplate and which has its upper edge formed with an annular flange 2 providing the top or cap of the plate and this top is channeled longitudinally, as at 3, to receive a substantially rectangular plate or strip L1 of hardened material, the same being retained in the chamber by screws 5. The frame 1 is notched centrally from its top, the said notch for a suitable distance 'below the top or cap 2 being closed by a guide 9, and the plate 8 from the upper edge is provided with notches whose opposite walls are beveled or inclined, as at 10, inwardly from the top of the said plate, the
beveled walls communicating with a vertidisposed substantially rectangular opening 11 in the said plate S. Secured upon the outer face of the plate 8 below the -rectangular opening 11 therein is a ,block 12, and also secured upon the said outer tace of the plate to straddle the lower portion -of the substantially V-shaped notch and partially close the upper portion of the i opening 11 is a second block 13. This block 13 has its lower face provided with a substantially rectangular depression 14.
The gage is indicated by the numeral 15 and comprises a substantially rectangular member disposed to be snugly received in the substantially L-shaped guides 9 of the plate 10 and having its lower edge provided with an outwardly extending centrally disposed lug 16 which is adapted to be received in the opening 11 of vthe plate 10, and if necessary, to contact with the side walls provided by the said opening. The lug has a threaded orilice 17 to receive the upper end of agage screw 18 which passes through an opening in the block 12 and which is provided with collars 19 and 20 contacting with the opposite faces of the block to permit of the free rotation of the screw in the block.
' The collar 20 is provided with a similar indicating mark 21 upon the outer face of the block 12, and the threads of the screw are so cut as to indicate the elevation of the gagel 23 which is notched at its ends, as at 24C, to receive the inwardly extending portions of the L-shaped guides 9. The body of the plate, at its upper edge, is formed centrally with notches as is the central portion of the shelf 23 providing the body as well as the inner edges of the shelves with vertically extending parallel side walls 24: which have their outer edges beveled outwardly or toward the ends of the gage, as indicated by the numerals 25. Extending centrally throughthe notch formed integral with the body of the gage is a substantially rectangular block 26 which is centrally formed with a square lug 27 and which is beveled from its opposite corners inwardly to the said lug, as indicated by the numerals 28. The inclined surfaces 28 are arranged at an angle from the upper corners of the beveled portions 25 or in a direct line with the juncture of the said beveled corners and the top of the gage proper, so that a lile resting upon either of the surfaces 28 will contact with the gage at the mentioned corners.
The numerals 29 designate the slide members one of which resting upon each of the shelves 23. Each of the slides includes a substantially rectangular body portion 30 which is reduced on one of its sides for the major portion of its length, the said reduced portion having an elongated slot 31 through which passes a guide screw 32 that enters the inner face of each of the shelves 23. The forward and enlarged portions of the body of each of the slides 29 has its end beveled, as at 33, the bevel of the said ends equaling the beveled portions 25 of the cage proper, and each of the members 29 is provided with an upstanding thumb piece 311, whereby the same may be moved longitudinally over the shelves to permit of its beveled edge registering with the beveled corners 25 of the shelves 23, or whereby the members 29 may be spread over the notched portion of the gage.
As previously stated, the saw 35 is arranged to contact with the ribs G and 7 to have its teeth contact with the strips 4. By working the slide members 29 over either of the shelves 23 of the gage member the operator can determine the height of the raker teeth without bending to see the exact position of the raker teeth with relation to the gage, as it will be apparent that along raker tooth will be contacted by the slide and a tooth not long enough to be operated on will not be contacted by the slide. A raker tooth is arranged in the notched portion in the top of the catch 15 and its end is bent over the corners 25 of the shelves 23 by the impact of force such as the blow of a small hammer. rlhe file is then arranged upon the inclined surfaces 28 and operated until the said le rests upon the upper corners provided bv the said portions 25 and the surfaces of the portions 28. rThis, it will be noted, prevents the file from cutting too much over the tooth and also permits all of the said teeth being swaged and filed at the same angle and at the same length. llfhe lug il is arranged in a line with the shelves 23 so that should it be desired to cut the ralrer teeth straight 'off the vlile can be operated in a line with the upper edge of said lug and the upper surfaces of the shelves.
The screw member 18 is adapted to be locked in its adjusted position through the medium of an adjustable binding element 50. llfhe element 50 is preferably in the nature of a screw, and is engaged in a threaded opening in the block 12 which communi- Cates with the opening through which the screw passes.
From the above description, taken in cona nection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what 1 claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, a frame having its inner face provided with longitudinal ribs, its top extending inwardly over its inner face and channeled longitudinally, a strip of hardened material arranged in the channel and removably secured therein, the frame from its upper edge being centrally notched, a notched face plate partially filling the notch and secured to the frame, a gage arranged for slidable movement on the inner face of the face plate, means for sliding the gage upon the said plate and deterunining the elevation of the gage with respect to the said plate, said gage having its upper edge centrally notched and the corners of the side walls provided by the notch beveled, a rectangular member providing a block formed centrally in the notch and having its upper face centrally provided with a rectangular lug, the upper portion of which beingin a line with the upper edge of the gage and the upper face of the block to the opposite sides of the lug being beveled inwardly.
2. ln a device of the class described, the combination with a frame which is centrally notched, of a notched face plate partially filling the notch and secured upon the frame, said plate having sides provided with guides, a gage member arranged in the guides, means upon the plate co-acting with the gage for moving the gage within the guides, means for locking the said sliding means, said gage having its upper face notched to provide parallel side walls which have their corners beveled, a block centrally formed in the notched portion of the gage and having a central lug arranged in a line with the top of the gage, the face of the block to the opposite sides of the lug being beveled inwardly.
3. In a device of the class described, a frame comprising a plate having a central notch, guide members arranged to the opposite vertical walls of the notch, a gage having its ends arranged in the said guides, means for moving the gage in the guides and means for locking the gage upon the frame, said gage having its upper edge centrally notched, the side walls thus provided having their upper corners beveled, a block arranged centrally of the notch and having a central lug which is arranged on a level with the top of the gage, the top of the block being beveled from its ends inwardly to the lug, and sliding members upon the top of the gage to the opposite sides of the notch.
4L. In a device of the class described, a frame having a central notch, a face plate partially securing the notch, said face plate being partially open from its upper edge and having guide members thereon, spaced block members upon the plate and the upper block member having its lower face recessed, a gage member having its ends received in the guides and having a lug passing through the open face of the plate between the blocks, a screw member revoluble upon the lower block and received in a threaded opening in the lug, and the said lug being of a width to be received in the depression in the upper lug, and means for locking the screw against rotation.
5. In a device oit' the class described, a substantially rectangular frame having a central notch upon its upper edge, a notched face plate partially closing the notch of the frame, said plate having L-shaped guides received in the notch of the frame, a substantially rectangular gage member having its ends received in guides and having an inturned shelf at its upper edge, the said upper edge of the gage and the central portion of the shelf being notched to pro-vide parallel straight walls which have their corners beveled, the gage at. the notch being centrally formed with an upstanding block having its upper edge provided with a lug and the upper walls of the block being beveled from their sides to the said lug, a slide member upon the opposite ends of the shelf and arranged to be moved partially over the notch, means upon the face of the plate and co-acting with the gage for sliding the gage in the guides of the face plate, and means for locking the said first mentioned means.
