Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1916.
Application filed May 25, 1915. Serial No. 30,272.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Im )rovement in Desks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in desks, and the invention has for its object to pr0- vide a device of the character specified, more especially adapted for office use, wherein a central support is provided, having a series of horizontal partitions, and mounted on wheels'or rollers to permit the support to be moved from place to place and in any direction, and wherein the support is provided with series of shelves at sundry of the partitions extending laterally outward at angles of 90 with respect to each other to permit either shelf to be used independently of all of the others and to permit a number of persons to use the desk simultaneously, and wherein sundry of the shelves are provided with extensions.
In thedrawings:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved desk, Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows adjacent to the line, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the extensions, Fig. 4 is a vertical section, Fig. 5 is a perspective View of a portion of one of the legs of the support, Fig. 6 is a vertical section through one of the supporting wheels or rollers, and Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7T of Fig. 6, looking in the direction of the arrows adjacent to the line.
The present embodiment of the invention comprises a skeleton support, consisting of four legs, posts or pipes, each of which is composed of two integral portions 1 and 1", the portions 1 being offset inwardly with respect to the portions 1. At the upper end of the portion 1 each pipe is provided with an angular extension 2, and the pipes are arranged with the extensions 2, extending inwardly, and they are connected by a disk 3 of suitable material.
A star-shaped bracket 4 is pivoted to the disk, the said disk having a central opening 5 for receiving pin 6 on the bracket, and a table 7 is secured to the arms of the bracket. The arms of the bracket diverge at angles of 90 with respect to each other,
and they are secured to the under face of the plate or table 7 in any usual or desired manner.
The pipes 1l are connected at the pertions '1' thereof by a frame 8-of metal and of suitable dimensions, the frame being square in the present instance, and being arranged at the inner sides of the pipes as shown. The frame is connected to each pipe or leg by means of a rivet 9 or the like, and the frame holds the legs in proper relation with respect to each other.
lVheels or rollers are connected with the lower ends of the legs, each wheel or roller consisting of two disks 10, connected by a headed pin or rivet 11. This pin or rivet passes through central openings in the disks 10, the said openings being coaxial, and the pin or rivet is headedat the outer face of each disk. The portion of the pin that passes through the central opening of the disk is reduced to limit the inward movement of the wheelsor disks.
A standard 12 is secured to each pin or rivet at its center, and each standard is provided at its upper end with a post 13, and with an annular rib 14 between the post and the body of the standard. This post 13 is adapted to engage the lower end of the adjacent pipe and to fit therein, and it will be noted that each pipe is provided at its lower end with a marginal rib 15, resting upon the upper face of the rib 14 and of the same external diameter.
A union in the form of a washer 16 is provided for connecting each standard to the adjacent pipe, each of the said washers 16 having depending pins 17 at its periphery, which engage notches 18 and 19 in the ribs 14 and 15, respectively. The engagement of,
the pins with the notches prevents angular movement of the bracket and wheels with respect to the post or leg, and the parts are so arrangedthat the axes of the wheels at diagonally opposite posts or legs will b parallel;
Two bars 20 of angle material are secured to the posts near the lower ends of the pore tions 1*" thereof. Each bar 20 is'connected to two posts, being arranged on the inner sides thereof, and the bars are secured to the posts in any suitable or desired manner. Each bar has a vertical portion which is secured to the post and a horizontal portion posts and at the same level with the bars 20.
These bars are arranged with their horizontal portions inwardly, and plates or tables 23 are'secured to the portions of the bars bymeans of screws 24, or thelike. The bars 20 extend beyond the support at each end, and similar plates or tables 28 are secured to the horizontalportions of the bars.
Thus fourof the tables 23 are provided, one plate or table extending outwardly. from a each of the sides of the plate 21.
Itwill be noticed from an inspection of Fig. A, that the plates 23 are of greater thickness than the plate 21," and since. the
horizontal portions of the bars 2022 are arranged with their upper surfaces in the same planethe upper surfaces of the plates 23. are above the upper face of the plate 21.
Channel bars are secured to the portions 1' of. the posts about half way between @the plate or table 7 and the plate or table 21,
the said channel bars being parallel with the bars 20, and secured to the pipes'at, the inner sides thereof. .The channel bars 25 are arranged with their channels inwardly, and other pairs of channel bars 26 are arranged V parallel with the bars 22. Each pair of channel bars, 26 is parallel to the adjacent pair of bars 22, and these bars 26 are arranged with, respect to the bars 25 in the same manneras are the bars 22 with respect to the bars 20 V A plate 21 is'sup-ported on theupper flanges of the channel bars 25, the said plate being square and similar to the plate 21, be-
fore mentioned. Other plates or tables 23 similar in all respects'tothe plate 23, are arranged on the extended ends of the channelbars 25 and on the channel bars 26. The plates 23 are secured to the upper. flangesof the channel bars 25 and 26, by means of screws 2 7'orthe like. j i
A plate or slide 28 is mounted in the channels of each pair of channel bars 26 i and in the channels at each end of the bars 25, the slide bars being of alength to extend from the outer ends of the plates 23 to the adjacent pair of pipes ;1 and 1*, when the extensions arein inward position.
Each extension is provided with a handle in the form of a loop or bail on its under side, eachlo'op or'bail comprising a body 29 and arms 30, secured to the under face ,of the plate. ,A second handle or support is connected'to each slide plate at the outerend "thereof, each of the said handles or supports comprising abody31 and arms 82, ex- :tending laterally from the'ends of the body. Each arm 32 is provided Witha lateral lug 38 at the end remote from the body, and extendingat right angles to the arm, and
these lugs are secured to the under face of the plate in any suitable manner outside the ends of the handle 2930. The handles 3132-33 are so arranged that the bodies of the bails will be above the table 23 and at the outer end thereof, while the handle 29-30 is so arranged that the body thereof will be below the plate 23 and spaced down wardly therefrom.
The outer ends of the bars 26 and the outer ends of the bars 25 are braced against the pipes'by inclined braces 34. The said I braces are ornamental in form, and each -brace is secured at one end to the outer face of the adjacent bar andat the other end to the adjacent pipe or leg.
The improved. desk requires but little floor surface, and since eachof the extensionsis spaced apart from all of the other extensions any extension is easlly accessible,
and may be used independentlyof the others. The several extensions or shelves may be extended by pulling out. the adjacent slide,
about twice the usual length.
The improved desk is not liable to tip over, because of the broad base. The plates 72121 may be used'for storage, while the shelves proper may be used for work or for storage. For office use, the desks are this making each shelf of the upper'series i very convenient for books. The book will table the locking rings 16 17 may be lifted upward to'release the ribs 14 and 15 from each other. When so released the rollers are casters. When the locking rings. are
'dropped however, the wheels are locked,
locking the support against movement in any direction. I
It is obvious that with the wheels locked, they cannot roll freely in; any direction. When released however, all may'take'a po- -sition with their axes parallel to permit the fre rolling of the support. Iclaim:* m 5' 1. A desk embodying a support comprising parallel connected legs, a plurality of series of pairsofbars connected with the support, the bars of each series having their upper surfaces in the same plane, and the members of each pair extending in parallel relation from one side of the support, a
