OFFICE;
JAMES n; PATTEEsoN, OF GLENS FALLS, NEw YORK.
IMPROVEMENT YIN BOOT-AND-SHOE BLACKIING.
Specification forming part of meat Patent No. 119,239, dated September 26,1871; antedated September 23,1871.
Be it known that I, JAMEs H. PATTERSON, of Glens Falls, in the county of Warren, State of New York, have invented an Improvement in It consists in reducing the materials of which blackings for leather are composed to a powder or dust by evaporating the moisture from the maafter it is compounded, and reducing it to a dry fine dust.
I give thefollowing as my form of manufacturing: Take a paste or liquid blacking prepared any other form. When thusprepared expose it to heat, either natural or artificial, until the moisture is evaporated. Then reduce the substance remaining to a fine powder or dust.
To use, wet the laying side of the brush commonly used in applying paste-blacking, put a small quantity of the powder upon the brush and apply it to the boot or leather to be blackened and polished, as is now practiced; or the leather may be first wet and the powder applied to the leather and polished.
The advantages which I claim by this method over the old one are: First, a larger amount of polish can be put in the same space. Second, the expenses of transportation are diminished by the weight of the moisture removed. Third, it can be done up in paper, saving the expense of bottles and boxes. Fourth, it is neater, forming no unseemly daubs. Fifth, it is more available-none is lost by evaporation.
I do not claim a new combination of materials, or any improvement in the materials or their combination.
I claim as my invention- The manufacture of a powder or dry-dust blacking and polish for leather, substantially as above described.
