Specification of Letters Patent.'
Patented July 18, 1916.
Application led December 14, 1914. Serial No. 877,127.
T 0 all whom t 'may concern.' A
Be it known that I, ELBERT V. D. RoossEAU, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Boundbrook, in the county of Somerset and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaving-Lather Producers, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.
This invention relates to lather producers used by bal-bers, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device -of this class which will be simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and which may be easily and quickly manipulated and will be effective in operation and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved lather producing device; Fig. 2 a central vertical section thereof; Fig. 3 a plan view; and, Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing only a detail of the construction and showing the same on an enlarged scale.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a receptacle a which is preferably of the form of an ordinary can and which isalso provided with a removable cover a2 which, in the form of construction shown, is threaded onto the can a, but which may be detachably connected therewith in any desired manner. The cover a2 is provided in one side portion thereof with a filling aperture a3 closed by a detachable cap a4 and through whichsoap and water may be passed to till, or partially fill the can in the operation of the device. The central part of the cover a2 isA provided with a stuffing box a5 through which is passed a'main plunger tube 7) provided at its lower end with a plunger head C composed, in the form of construction shown, of an upper concavo-convex disk c2 and a bottom or lowcr conveX-concavo disk 03. Both of the disks c2 and c areperforated as shown at c4, or provided with numerous apertures, and the tube passes through the plunger head c and is provided in the lower end thereof with ports b2. The lower end portion of the tube is contracted as shown at b3 to form a valve seat and a valve chamber b4 in which is placed a ball valve b5 which operates in connection with the valve seat b3. The tube is also provided at the top thereof with a head L" having radial arms )7,and said head is also provided with a stuffing box L through which is passed a supplemental pump tube nf which extends downwardly into the tube and is approximately of the same length. The tube l is provided at its upper end with a head (Z2 having radial arms d in which is formed a central air inlet port (Z4, and said tube l is also provided at itsI lower end with a hollow spherical piston head rl provided in the bottoln thereof with ports or passages d?, and the piston head Il forms a valve chamber in which is placed a spherical valve 17, and the lower end of the tube (l forms a valve seat [Z8 in connection with which the valve Z7 operates.
In one side portion of the can a is a vertically arranged tube e which passes loosely and eccentric-ally through the parts c2 and o of the plunge-r head c and which is rigidly secured in the cover a2. The upper end of the tube e passes through the cover (L2 as' shown at c2 and is provided with a discharge spout f having a body portion f2 screwed onto the tube e andl the passage through which is controlled by a valve g having a stem g2 which passes through the top of the head f2, and with which is connected at L a thumb lever h2 pivoted at It, and between the thumb lever h2 and the body f2 is placed a spring h4 which normally holds the valve g in a closed position. I also provide means for locking the tube in the position shown in Figs'. 1 and 2, and for this purpose the cap a of the stufiing box a5 is provided, in the form of construction shown, and at one sidethercof, with a raised casing 1 7 in which is placed a spiral spring 2' between which and the tube b is placed a lock plug 2, and the lock plug 112 normally operates in a recess 3 in the outer side of the tube b, and a headed pin 4 is passed downwardly through a radial slot in the top of the casing a7 and into the lock plug 272. This construction is most clearly shown in Fig. 4, and by means thereof the tube is normally locked in its innermost position as shown in Fig. 2.
In the operation ofthis device predeter# mined amounts of Water and powdered soap are passed into the can a and the lock plug 2 is moved outwardly so that the tube b may be raised byl grasping the arms 57 of the head b thereof, and said tube including the plunger head c is manipulated in the manner of a plunger to beat lup and form a lather of water and soap. In this operation, it will be understood, of course, that the tube' b and d are manipulated together, or as one ele-- ment of a complete plunger, the other part ofvwhich consists of the head c which forms when a AportionI of said lather is required for use allthat is necessary is to depress the thumb lever 71.2 andthe lather-will be forced out'through4 the tube e and through the discharge spout f. I'also preferably provide vention or sacrificing its advantages.
will also be understood that my improved` lather producer may be made of any desired the lower end of the` tube e .with a funnelshaped or similar terminal head j which .will facilitate the feeding thereinto and the passing therethrough of` the lather, as will be readily understood,"and while I have 'shown anddescribed the preferred formof my improvement, my vinvention is not v A limited to the details of construction herein. shown and described, and changes thereink and modifications. thereof may be made,
within the scope of the appended claims, without depart/ing .from the spirit 'of my in- Itv dimensions lor capacity and of any'vpreferred form, and any suitable material may be employed in the construction thereof.
,In the use of this device the lather is discharged from the spout f directly onto the face, or maybe discharged into the hand and applied to the face, and is preferably rubbed onto the face by the hand without the use of a brush, and the device is thus made sanitaryin every respect as no dust,
I tacle dirt or other substance can get into the can a when in use. rlhe lathermay, however, beapplied by means of a brush, if desired, and instead of using soaphand water, as herein described from Ywhich the lather is formed in the can a, liquid 'soap may be used and made into va lather as will be Areadily understood.
Having fully described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1."In a lather producing device, a. receprovided with a cover, a tube fixed in one side-.portion thereofA and passing out through the cover and'provided with a dis'- charge spout having a valve, and a combination plunger and pump device involving a main outer tube and a supplemental inner tube, said main outer tube being movable vertically through the cover and the supplemental inner tube being movable vertically in the main outer tube, and means for locking the main outer tube to the cover.
2. In a lather producing device, a receptacle provided with a cover, a tube fixed in one side portion thereof and one end of which passes out through the kcover and is v.provided with a discharge spout, and the other end of which passes down into the receptacle and is provided with an inverted funnel-shaped head, and a combina-- tion plunger or pump device involving a main outer tubevandqa supplemental inner tube, said main 'outer 'tube being movable vertically through the. cover and the supplemental inner tube being movable vertically inthe main outer tube,-l and means for locking the mainouter tube ,to the cover.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name 1n presence of the subscribing witnesses this 10th day of Decemberl9-14.
ELBERT v.,n. ROUSSEAU.
