Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JOHN C. Fonn, deceased, late a citizen of the United States residing at Keokuk, Lee county, Iowa, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Suction Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Said invention relates to improvements in suction apparatus, and refers particularly to an apparatus for body treatment being specially designed for treatment of the scalp for the purpose of cleaning and massaging as well as drying, and for massaging the skin for the purpose of nervous treatment, and generally speaking combines an apparatus capable of cleaning, or massaging as circumstances require.
One object of this invention is the provision of an apparatus of the character and for the purpose stated which will be compact and small in size to occupy a small amount of space and which can be instantly connected to the ordinary electric fixtures and operate perfectly and which can be instantly disconnected when not desired for service.
Another object of this invention is the provision of an apparatus of the character and for the purpose stated which will be composed of comparatively few parts and thus be able to stand hard usage and not get out of order, which will be thoroughly efficient for the purpose intended and which in general will combine the requirements to insure a useful and practical apparatus for the intended purpose.
With the attainment of these and other in herent objects in view this invention consists of an apparatus for the treatment of the scalp and skin embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
In order that the detailed construction and the operation of this apparatus may be fully understood and its features of merit and advantages be fully appreciated, there is illustrated in the accompanying drawings an apparatus constructed in accordance with and embodying this invent-ion.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of this complete apparatus with the parts in position for use and showing the connections for producing a vibratory action, a vacuum operation and a hair drying or skin drying means, all in their proper relation. Fig. 2 represents a vertical central sectional View of the main operating parts of this apparatus, shown on an enlarged scale for the purpose of clearness in illustration. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view on an enlarged scale of the air regulating valve used in this apparatus. Fig. 4. represents a perspective view of the valve casing or chamber. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of the sleeve surrounding the valve chamber for regu lating the valve and the air supply to said chamber. Fig. 6 represents a side elevation of the valve casing without the sleeve in position thereon, and Fig. 7 represents a side elevation of the surrounding sleeve showing the knob for turning the sleeves and also showing the circular opening in one wall of the sleeve and of the inclined opening in the opposite wall of said sleeve, these views of the valve mechanism all being on an enlarged scale.
Referring by numerals to the drawings in which similar characters of reference are used to denote corresponding parts in all the views of the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a table or platform mounted upon supporting legs 2, and upon which all of the mechanism of my apparatus is supported, the table being of the proper size to accommodate my apparatus. Upon the table is secured the base 3 carrying the motor 4, which drives the belt or connections 5, traveling over the fly wheel 6, carried by the shaft 7, mounted eccentrically in the cylindrical casing 8, which casing is provided at its lower portion with the threaded nipple 9, and at its upper portion with the threaded nipple 10, and at one side with the threaded nipple 11, the purpose of all of which will presently appear.
To the lower threaded nipple 9, is secured the base or pedestal 13, formed at one side with the branch 14, to which is connected the flexible hose or pipe 15, which pipe or hose carries a suitable implement and performs the function of drying the hair or skin. its free end a suitable implement 18, and this tube and implement as will presently appear serve as a vibrator.
Upon the driving shaft which is mounted eccentrically in the casing is secured the cylindrical piston 19, having upon its periphery a series of recesses 20, and communicating curved seats 20, and in each recess 20, fits a head 21, on one of the wings 21, which wings open and close upon rotation of the plunger and occupy the positions shown in Fig. 2, this rotation of the plunger and action of the wings producing a vacuum or suction action within the casing.
To the threaded nipple 10, on the casing is secured the lower threaded end 23, of the sleeve 24, formed at its upper portion with the broad supporting ring or flange 25, and having mounted therein the pair of spiders 26, provided with an opening 27 which receive and guide the depending stem 28, carrying at its upper end the disk shaped valve 29.
In one side of the sleeve 24 is a vertical opening 29, and through this opening passes the horizontal arm 30, which at its inner end is provided with a collar 31, retained by a set screw 32, upon the valve stem 28, and said horizontal arm passes through the vertical opening of the sleeve and projects outward through the inclined slot 33, in the surrounding band or collar 34, which is provided with a manipulating finger knob 35,
and opposite the curved slot therein is provided with a circular opening 33. From this construction and upon reference to Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 it will be noted that the turning of the band or collar upon the valve casing or sleeve has the two-fold effect of raising or lowering the disk valve and also of regulating the relation of the circular opening of the band or collar with reference to the circular opening of the valve casing or sleeve. That is to say the arm connected with the valve stem passing both through the valve casing and the hand operated collar, upon the turning of the collar will cause the arm connected to the valve stem to move vertically up or down to close the disk valve upon the valve casing, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, or to open or move the valve away from the valve casing as shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
' Mounted upon the flange of the valve casing is the receptacle 36, which is in communication with the valve casing at its bottom and is provided with a perforated cap or hood 37, whose function is to prevent entrance of foreign matter to the valve or its casing, and upon the top of the casing is secured the cap or cover 38, such cover being made rigid and air tight by means of the packing ring or gasket 40, and retained in place by means of the screw rod 41 mounted in the cover at its upper end and having its lower headed end 42, retained in'the cross piece 43, secured to the receiver. The cover upward extension 47, in which fits a connecting thimble 48, whose projecting portion also forms the joint for the coupling 48, having the horizontal branch 49, in which is mounted the spring actuated relief valve 50, said valve being mounted in the casing 51, retained in the sleeve 52, snugly fitting said branch 49. To the upper vertical portion of said coupling is fitted the depending nipple 53, on the box or case 55, which is covered by the cap 56, from which leads the elbow 57, which elbow at its other end is joined by the coupling 58, with the tube 59, carrying at its lower end a suitable scalp treating instrument 60.
The casing or boX between the coupling and elbow has mounted therein a mesh or like covering 61, upon which rests the lower portion of a coiled spring 62, whose upper portion bears upon the upper wall of the cover or cap of said casing, and the purpose. of this casing is to demonstrate to a person the amount of foreign or impure matter which in one treatment is drawn into said casing, it being understood thatthe elbow and top of easing can be instantly removed to show the contents of the casing. 7
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings the operation of my apparatus will. be readily understood the top or cover into the receiver, from which bags the foreign matter can be readily discharged. This suction action is effected by the rotation of the piston and the action of the wings thereof and by reason of the rapid revolution of the piston produces a very strong suction and instantly thereby cleans the scalp of any impure or foreign material and deposits such material in the bags or sacks, the travel of the suction air for this purpose being indicated by arrows upon Fig. 2 of the drawings.
When found necessary to employ my apparatus as a vibrator or for treating nervous affections the surrounding sleeve on the valve chamber is rotated to close the valve as shown in dotted lines, and under these conditions the rapid rotation of the cylindrical piston compresses the air within the casing and imparts through the connection at one side of the casing a vibratory action which is transmitted through the tube to a suitable implement for this purpose. It will thus be understood that my apparatus while consisting of few parts is capable of many uses and that it will perform its various functions in thoroughly efiicient and practical manner, and it will be understood that in the event of too much pressure by reason of suction being generated in the receiver, the relief valve can be pushed inward to permit the escape of excess air and thus bring the pressure to normal.
It will be noted that the manually operated collar or band opens and closes the valve as well as regulates the air entrance and this forms an important part of my invention. It will be understood that the valve casing is provided with the vertical elongated opening 24, and also with a circular oppositely disposed opening 24: and that the surrounding band or collar having the inclined or curved slot 33 is also provided with an oppositely disposed circular opening or slot 33, and that the rotation of the said band or collar acts to adjust the valve as well as to regulate the entrance of air through the collar to the valve casing or sleeve, and that the adjustment of the valve and the regulation of the air openings is at tained by the manual turning of the said band or collar, the construction, arrangement and operation of these parts being clearly shown in Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 which show the mechanism on an enlarged scale for the purpose of clearness.
I claim:
1. In an apparatus of the character described, a casing, a rotary suction inducing means therein, an extension of said casing, a reciprocatory valve stem therein, a valve controlled by said stem, and a receiver mounted upon the said extension and within which said valve is located and provided with a perforated cap inclosing said valve.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, a casing, a rotary suction inducing means therein, an extension of said casing, a reciprocatory valve stem therein, a valve controlled by said stem, a receiver mounted upon the said extension and within which said valve is located, and rotary means embracing said extension for regulating the admission of air.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, a base, a casing mounted thereon and having means for the connection of a tube therewith, rotary suction inducing means within said casing, an extension on said casing, a receptacle on said casing, a reciprocatory valve stem in said extension, a valve thereon outside said extension and within said receptacle, rotary means embracing said extension, and means on said stem engageable with said rotary means.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, a base, a casing mounted thereon and having means for the connection of a tube therewith, rotary suction inducing means within said casing, an extension on said casing, a receptacle on said casing, a reciprocatory valve stem in said extension, a valve thereon outside said extension and within said receptacle, rotary means embracing said extension, means on said stem engageable with said rotary means, and a perforated cap within said receptacle receiving said valve.
6. In an apparatus of the character described, a base, a casing mounted thereon and having means for the connection of a tube therewith, rotary suction inducing means within said casing, an extension 011 said cas ing, a receptacle on said casing, a reciprocatory valve stem in said extension, a valve thereon outside said extension within said receptacle, rotary means embracing said extension, means on said stem engageable with said rotary means, and valved means communicating with said receptacle.
7. In an apparatus of the character described, a base, a casing mounted thereon and having means for the connection of a tube therewith, rotary suction inducing means within said casing, an extension on said casing, a receptacle on said casing, a reciprocatory valve stem in said extension, a valve thereon outside said extension and within said receptacle, rotary means embracing said extension, means on said stem engageable with said rotary means, and valved means communicating with said receptacle and extended thereinto for the attachment of a bag.
8.
