Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTER J. BEATTIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cohoes, county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F old-Collars, of which the following is a specilication.

Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.

In the fold-collars of the kind to which this invention relates, the folded-over top of the collar tends to press against the back collar-button and force the same with uncomfortable pressure against the back of the neck of the wearer.

The principal object of the invention is to relieve such pressure `of the folded-over top upon the back collar-button while preserving the appearance, and contour of the lower edge, of the top.

Figure l of the drawings is a rear view in perspective of a fold-collar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the back part of the same on the broken line 2 2 inFig. l. Fig. 3v is a rear view of a broken-away back-portion of the collar before the patch is inserted in the notched portion of the folded-over top. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the patch previous to its application to the top. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the patch 'on the broken line 5-5 in Fig. 4.

Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1 is the band and 2 is the folded-over top of a foldcollar, both being made of a plurality of plies of fabric as usual. The band is provided with the usual back button-hole, 3, for the back collar-button, 4, whereby the band is attached to the neckband, 5, of a` shirt. In the vicinity of the back buttonhole in the band, the top is formed with a notch or cut-out, 6, in its lower edge, whereby the top is prevented from pressing against the collar-button inserted in said back button-hole, 3. Such a notched or cutout top has been employed with satisfactory results so far as relieving the uncomfortable pressure upon the neck of the wearer is concerned; but its popularity has been limited for the reason that fastidious persons hesitate to wear a collar which exposes the back collar-button or the band of the necktie at the back, as does a collar having the top so notched'.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a patch, 7, to bridge over the notch, 6, and complete the contour of the lower edge of the folded-over top. The patch is preferably made ofa piece lof fabric doubled upon itself to form a folded edge, 8, which completes the contour of the lower edge of the top, and is preferably attached to the top by inserting its raw edges between the plies of the top and inserting a line of stitching, 9, through the inturned edges of the plies of the top and the inserted portion of the patch along the edge of the notch. The patch is preferably made substantially wider than the notch and is fulled as inserted so `that its fullness adapts it to bulge outwardly beyond the normal surface-lines of the top as shown in Fig. 2, so as to not press upon the back collar-button in use.

Vhen the collar has been starched and ironed, the joint between the patch and edges of the notch will be inconspicuous and the collar seen from the rear will appear little different from any ordinary fold-collar, as the contour of the lower edge of the top will be continuous and the band of the necktie and the back collar-button will be fully concealed.

Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l; A fold-collar having a band provided with a back buttonhole, and a folded-over top formed with a'notch in its lower edge opposite the back buttonhole in the band, and a fulled patch attached to the top bridging said notch and completing the contour of the lower edge of the top.

2. A fold-collar having a band providedl with a back buttonhole, and a folded-over top formed of a plurality of plies with a notch in its lower edge opposite the back buttonhole in the band, and a patch inserted and secured between the plies of the top bridging said notch and completing the contour of the loweredge of the top, said patch having a fullness whereby it is adapted to bulge outwardly beyond the normal surfacelines of the top.
