To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP A. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of 'Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented 'certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a ressure controlling device which is appllcable to various mechanisms but is more particularly designed for use with spray pumps, or the like, in which it is desired to interrupt the operation of the pumping instrumentalities when the resistance to the movement of the piston has become abnormal, without interrupting the application of ower to the operatingdevices. Pumps 0? this kind have been heretofore designed but for the most part they have not been of a satisfactory construction or operation.
The object of the present invention is to provide a pum of this t e in which the controllin mec anism wil be of a very simple and o a highly practical character, thus not only cheapening the construction of the ump but also rendering it more certain in its operation and less hable to get out of order or to fail to operate.
To this end, it is a further object of the invention to provide improved means for applying the controlling spring to the operating mechanism, and to so arrange the mechanism that a short spring supported solely by the connecting rod may be utilized 'to yieldably control the action of the concylinder, or cylinders, 2. This discharge pipe is usually connected with atank in w ich the fluid is stored under air pressure and to which are connected the hoseand nozzle, 'or other distributing devices.' This tank is constructed to withstand a certain predetermined pressure and to avoid injury to the tank and possible injury to the operator it is essential that the pressure should not rise materially above the predeterof gearing 9 and 10 from a shaft 11 to which power may be applied either by a belt or in any other suitable manner- To control the movement of the movable part of the mechanism I have interposed between the same and another part of the apparatus a. two part connecting rod or toggle, the two parts of which are held normally against relative movement by a spring. In the present embodiment of the invention the to gle serves to transmit power from the sha to the piston and to this end a toggle is interposed between the crank shaft and each piston. The two members of each toggle or connecting rod, as shown at 12 and 13, are pivotally connected one to-the other, at 14 and, at those ends remote from the axis of said connection, are pivotally connected respectively to the crank shaft and to the piston 3, as shown at 1 and 16. The movements of the two members of the connecting rod about their intermediate axis 14, by which they are connected one to the other, .are so controlled that this axis cannot move into 100 alinement with the axis, 15 and 16, of the connections between the ends of the rod and the piston and crank shaft, respectively. The movement of this intermediate axis toward a line extending through the axes 15 105 and 16 of the rod is limited by cooperating parts of the two members of the rod. As here shown, one member, 12, has a projection or .lug 17 extending beyond the axis 14 and arranged. to eng g a p rt or 111g 18 car- 110 ricd by the other member, 13, of the rod when the two parts of the rod are moved toward alinement, the arrangement of the parts 17 and 18 being such that the axis 14 cannot b moved into line with the axes 15 and 16. Preferably, one of the parts, as here shown the part 18, is provided with a cushion, such as a block of leather, to deaden the sound and to absorb the shock due to the contact of these parts.
A spring 19 is connected with the two members of the rod in such a manner as to resist their movement in a direction to carry the intermediate axis 14 away from the line extending through the axes 15 and 1f the strength of this spring being such that it will prevent any movement of either member of the rod about the axis 14 so long as the resistance to the movement of the piston does not become abnormal, that is, as the pressure in the tank does not exceed a certain predetermined limit. So long as the resistance to the piston is normal the spring renders the connection between the two members of the connecting rod a rigid one and the coimecting rod operates in the same manner as an ordinary rigid connectin rod. When the pressure exceeds said pre etermined limit and the resistance to the movement of the piston becomes abnormal, the two members of the connecting rod will be moved about their connecting axis, 14, and
this axis will be moved farther out of alinement with the axes 15 and 16, this movement being against the tension of the spring. This relative movement of the two members of the connecting rod gradually increases until the piston 3 is held against all movement and the movement of the crank shaft is absorbed by the relative movement of the two members of the connecting rod. As soon as the resistance to the movement of the piston becomes again normal, or approaches normal, the spring will move the two members in'opposite directions and the axis, 14, will be moved toward its normal position, thus gradually restoring the normal operation of the pump. The spring 19 may be connected with the two members of the connecting rod in different manners. I prefer the construction shown herein, because of its simple character, compact arrangement and great strength. In this arra ment I have used the compression spring 19 and have connected one end of this spring to the member 12 of the connecting rod and have connected the other end of the to abifurcated extension or finger 20 rigidly secured to and forming a part of themember 13 of the connecting rod and extending beyond the axis 14, the arrangement being such that the points of connection of the spring with the two members of the connecting rod are adjacent one to the other and approximately in alinement with the spring. In the present instance the connections are made by pivotall connecting a rod 21 to the arm 12 at a point a short distance removed from the axis 14 and mounting on this rod two flanged plates 22 and 23 which form seats to receive the ends of the spring 19. The plate 23 is held on the pivoted rod by means of adjustable nuts 24 and 25, by means of which its position can be varied and the tension of the spring regulated. The plate 22 is'loosely mounted on the pivoted rod and has projections or lugs 26 seated in sockets or recesses 27 formed in the two parts of the finger 20 of the member 13 0f the connecting rod, the arrangement of the seats being such as to form aliued bearing for the lugs and to permit relative movement of the parts about the axis of said bearings. It will be apparent that the expansion of the spring 19 will tend to move the points of connection between the two ends of the spring and the two members of the connecting rod toward each other and thus move the two members of the connect- .ing rod toward their extended positions, that is, their positions nearest alinement, and likewise that the movement of the two m'embers in the other direction about their axis, 14, which tends to move said axis out of its normal position, will separate the points of connection of the spring and thus compress the spring.
The operation of the device will be read ily understood from the foregoing description and it will be apparent that I have provided a controlling mechanism which is very simple in its construction, which is wrtain in its operation and which is of a ve strong, durable character. Further, it wil be apparent that the device is readily ad- 'justable to cause the same to yield at different pressures; and further, that the device comprises very few parts; and that the character and arrangement of these parts is such that they will not readily get out of order or look or bind in such a manner as to interfere with or prevent the operation of the mechanism in the prescribed manner.
While the invention was primarily de signed for, and has been illustrated as applied to, a spray pump it will be apparent that it can be applied to pumps of other kinds or to mechanism other than pumps where the operation is similar and the device would be useful, and further, it will be understood that the construction shown and described has beenchosen for the purpose of illustration only and that I do not wish to be limited thereto, as obvious modification will occur to a firson skilled in the art.

In a mechanism of the character described, a movable member, a controlling device for said movable member comprising a ,toggle having one end pivotally connected with said movable member and having its other end pivotally connected with another part of said mechanism, the arms of said toggle having parts cooperating to prevent the intermediate axis of said toggle from being moved into alinement with the axes at the ends of said toggle, and a spring carried by said toggle and acting thereon to hold said parts of said arms normally in engagement.

In a mechanism of the character described, a movable member, a controlling device for said movable member comprising a toggle having one end pivotally connected with said movable member and having its other end pivotally connected with another part of said mechanism, one arm of said toggle having .a stop near the intermediate axis of said toggle and the other arm of said toggle having a part projecting beyond said intermediate axis and arranged to engage said stop and prevent said intermediate axis from being moved into alinement with the axes at the ends of the arms of said taggle, and a spring carried by said toggle and acting to hold said projection and said stop normally in engagement.

In a mechanism of the character described, a movable member, a controlling device for said movable member comprising a toggle having one end pivotally connected with said movable member and having its other end pivotally connected with another part of said mechanism, one arm of said toggle having a stop near'the intermediate axis of said toggle and the other arm of said toggle having a part projecting beyond said axis to engage said stop and prevent said intermediate axis from being moved into aliuement with the axes at the ends of the arms of said toggle, a cushion'interposed between said stop and said part of said lastmentioned arm, and a spring carried by said toggle and acting to hold said projection and said stop normally in engagement.

In a mechanism of the character described, a movable member, a controlling device for said movable member comprising a toggle having one end pivotally connected .with said movable member and having its ment with the axes at the ends of said tog-. gle, a spring connected at one endwith that part of the first-mentioned arm which projects beyond said intermediate axis and connected at its other end with the last-mentioned arm at a point adjacent to said part of the first-mentioned arm.
16. In a pump, the combination, with a p1st0n, and a crank s aft, of a two part connecting rod interposed between said piston and said shaft, the two part rod having its ends pivotally connected, respectively,
- with said shaft and said piston and having its two members pivotally connected one with the other, and a spring adapted to travel with said rod and to act thereon to hold the two members thereof against relative movement during the normal operation 10 of said pump and to permit said members to have relative movement when abnormal resistance is offered to the movement of said piston.
