T o all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. DOBLE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements lin Governing ll'lechanism, of which the following is a specification. l
., parity, if necessary, in order to keep up the speed and more water might pass through the gate than conditions allow. It is also desired sometimes to limit the output of the plant for other'purposes than limiting the water consumption.
The object, therefore, of this invention, 1s to provide means which may he attachedl to the usual governing mechanism and which is adapted to positively limit the extent of the opening of the controllin valve or gate which supplies the motive fluid to the prime mover.
I have illustrated the invention in connection with an impulse water wheel which is controlled by a needle gate valve actuated hy an auxiliary hydraulic motor which is controlled by a centrifugal governor. It will he obviousl from the following description that. the invention may be applied to the other forms of governors and is, therefore, not limited to the precise construction which l have shown.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation, partly in section. of an impulse water wheel and the controlling mechanism therefor, having m'y invention applied thereto. Fig. Q is a utransverse .section on the line BH2 4of Fig. 1.
Referring` to the drawings, 10 indicates the' shaft of an impulse wheel 1l, which carries the buckets l2, the wheel being inelosed in a housing 13, all of the usual construction. A conduit 14- supplies water to the wheel and is provided with a needle valve 15, which controls the quantity of water passing through the. nozzle 16.
The speed of the motor is maintained uniform 'under changing loads by varying the quantity of water discharged by the nozzle 1G. In order to effect this control the valve 15 is provided with a rearwardly extending stem 17 which passes through astufiing box 18 in the conduit l111. A governor 19, which may be of the centrifugal type, is driven from the shaft 10 by means of the belt 2O and actuates a pilot valve in the valve-body 2l. lVater or other iiuid under pressure is delivered to the valve-hody 2l and is admitted and discharged from the cylinder 22 by means Of the pilot valve in the usual manner. The cylinder 22 has the usual pis- -ton therein to which is connected the pistonrod Q3, provided with the cross-head 24C. Connecting links 25 connect the cross-head 24 with the end of the hell-crank 2G, which is mounted on the fixed pivot 27. The upright arm 28 of the bell-crank is connected with the valve stem 17 by means of the links 29. The various parts of the governing mechanism which have just been described are supported on a base 30 which has an opening in its upper side to permit oscillation of the bell-crank 2G and has arranged on the Opposite sides of said Opening the brackets or .stands 31 to which the block 32 is pivotally connected.
The bell-crank 2G has pivoted thereto the rod 33, having its upper end screw-threaded to receive the nut 34. Arranged on the upper side of the block 32 is a spring 35, which surrounds the rod 33 and acts as a buffer for the nut 34, this spring being of such strength as to overcome the actuating force applied to the bell crank 26.
The`operation ofthe mechanism is as follows: When it is desired-to limit the load which may be carried by the motor, or when it is desired to limit the quantity of water which may he discharged by the nozzle 1G, the nut 3a is adjusted to permit, when in the position shown` in the drawings, the maximum desired opening of thevalve 15. It will he observed that when the nut .is in contact with the buffer tlieeopening of the valve 15 has reached the liniit, but the valve may be moved freely toward the closed position so that the governing mech-A anism is adapted to freely control the motor for all loads below the desired maximum.

When the maximum load is reached or the maximum quantity of water is being discharged by the nozzle 16, the nut 34 will come into contact With the buffer 35 and positively prevent further opening of the valve 15, thereby effectually limiting the quantity of Water discharged.
It Will be understood that in some instances the centrifugal governor 19 may be connected directly with the bell-crank 26 or with any other equivalent element of the governing mechanism and therefore as the application of the invention shown is intended to be merely illustrative, I do not Wish to be limited to these precise'details of construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A governor comprising speed responsive means, speed controlling means actuated Iby said speed responsive means, and means for limiting the speed increasing action of said speed controlling means, and including a fixed abutment, a buffer on said fixed abutment, a rod adapted to be moved -by said speed responsive means, and an adjustable nut on said rod and adapted to engage said buier.
2. A governor comprising speed responsive means, speed controlling means, means connecting said speed responsive means and said speed controlling means and including a lever adapted to be rocked by said speed responsive means, an abutment having truir nions mounted in fixed bearings, a buffer on said abutment, a rod pivotally connected to said lever and passing through said abutment, and an adjustable nur on said rod and adapted to engage said buer to limit the speed increasing action of said speed controlling means.
