EARL O. CILLEY, O F CONKLIN, AND I'EHIEL J. CILLEY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN;
BURGLAR-GUARD.
- Application filed April 13, 1914,
Y '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EARL- O. CiLLnY and .l'rnini. J. CILLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Conklin and Grand Rapids, respectively, in. the counties of Oh tawa and Kent, respectively, and State of lllichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-G nerds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in appliances for use in stores, banks, express cars and other places-where valuables are kept, and especially in banks, jewelry stores, and the like, where daylight hold ups are likely to occur, for the purpose of prevent-- ing robberies, and its object is to so overcome the would be robber as to render it impossible for him. to carry out his designs, or to escape with booty before he could he disarmed and placed under arrest, and, at the same time, to place him. in such a con dition as to render it impossible for him to injure a teller, clerk or express agent by shooting him, or otherwise, This object is attained by the mechanism and means indicated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure l is a perspective of a. part of a counter with one end shown in section to Specification of Letters Patent.
disclose the location and indicate the opera a condition, as by stcrnly threatening him' with a revolver or other destructive weapon that he cannot possibly defend himself or the treasure hehas in charge, and in. many instances instant death is the penalty of but slight opposition. l/V-ith this invention it proposed to so locate and arrange spraying appliances. or other devices, tl t a very fir. and forcible spray of extremely pu volatile liquid may be thrown in su s .an ner as not to permanently injure the hold up man, but to so quickly and thoroughly impregnate the air he must hie-stile to temporarily strangle and blind him and to discharge, or

placed in a convenient position in a store or .oly under the counter 1, where it could not be readily seen or reached by the intruder, and a conductor pipe 3 connected with thi: tank, extending therefrom to any desired point in the building. From the conductor pipe a series of discharge pipes 5 are exended through the. front of the counter, or to nnyother desired location or position, so as to be made to discharge outside of the counter, as indicated inliig. 2, so that anyone standing outside of the :ounter would be in the direct range of the discharge. These discharge pipes are provided with cut oil' yalvesyas indicated at resist arrest or -7, which are located between the'conductor lnbQfOff: described. The reservoirs l are so connected with the discharge pipesflh', means of curved pipes ('3, as to. form a very strong current to draw the liquid from the reservoirs iwhen the'valves '7 are opened Sf; that the pressure from the chamber 2 may let-e through the discharge pipes 5.
3,518 valves 7 may be actuated toopen at iiroper and desired times by any of the 2 known n'ieans for accomplishing the de results. In Fig. l of the drawing we 'eshown an electrically operated trip' for one purpose. In this case wefhave shown the valve lever 16 supportedhy a link 10 which is suspei'ided from 'hook c on the .i :"zc'ier the counter 1, as at d, andtemporar'ily ported at the other end by a latch-e on slide 11 in such a manner that when the "magnet 12 is energized from the-battery 14., by any other available means, the-slide l be drawn from under the lever 9 weight 8 will draw the lever 16 d, indicated by its dotted lines .i, and open the valve 7 and allow se escape of pressure from the tank l 1e respective pipe {rand to the open as indicated in said Fig. 7.
When operating the valve trips by electricity, hereinhefore indicated, We pro pose lo place the switches 13 at various p01; in the store or bank so that any em "er 9, which lever is pivotally sup ported pleyee may actuate the desired trip, and to so piece the switches'that the men threatened-may slide'his hand over his key when raising hishands, and open up his valve without any perceptibleeliort to do so. It is, of course, to be understood that these switches may be placed at any conveniently {aveilu'ble point, as in the surface of the counter and set in so there will be no danger of accidentally operating them, in theedge of the counter, at distant desk or other available place,
" It will be readily understood that this applie'nce need not be confined to the of :iv
